TUMBLEWEED TUMBLEWEED Upgrade failed - No valid EFI partition found

$

Starting new thread that began in "TUMBLEWEED How to fix messed up Grub-loader, as requested. (Previous info in quote below.)

Quote:

On a slight variation on the theme, I have just attempted an upgrade from 13.2 to Tumbleweed using the DVD, but at the end I received an error message indicating that the /usr/sbin/shim-install, config-file = /boot/grub2/grub.cfg had failed (Error 1) because there was no valid EFI partition and the system will not now boot.

I have found my way to the rescue system and have read the instructions regarding the grub loader in the link specified in this thread. However, I'm guessing that I need an EFI partition in which to put the grub.cfg file. Is this possible from the rescue system? Or am I dead in the water? Thanks.

Reply from Flux Capacitor Penguin.

Well was it originally EFI or MBR boot?? If this is a UEFI machine and not a BIOS based one then you may need to turn off secure boot for the install/upgrade. Assuming you need a EFI boot ( ie pervious system was EFI) then be sure to boot the installer in EFI mode if the old was booting MBR then you need to boot the installe in legacy mode. The EFI boot directory is a small generally under 100 meg FAT partition. If it does not exist then you were using MBR boot and you must do the upgrade in legacy mode ie NOT EFI mode. Need a lot more detail since we can't see over your shoulder. Things like are you dual booting if so with what?

This should be recoverable but you need to share more info.

Really you should start a new thread

The system is (was) a single boot Harlequin version 13.2 on a BIOS based Intel Celeron platform with two SATA drives. One for normal system operation, the other dedicated for daily backups of the /home directory. From what has been said above, it appears that it was using an MBR boot. Sadly, while it's easy to say that I should have attempted the upgrade in legacy mode, I don't remember any such option appearing on the screen during the upgrade process with the DVD and was only presented with the EFI issue at the end of the install. Did I miss this vital piece of information? If so, would the fix be as simple as to re-run the upgrade, but in legacy mode?

Attempting to boot the system now only returns the message 'can't find command 'linuxefi', etc.

# fdisk -l command in rescue mode returns

/dev/sda1 2G Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda2 20G Linux
/dev/sda3 276G Linux

/dev/sdb1 931G Extended
/dev/sdb5 931G Linux

Thanks.

TUMBLEWEED Advice please on mounting USB disk for all users

I am running KDE Plasma 5 on Tumbleweed and want to be able to plug in a new external USB3 1TB hard disk formatted EXT4 with a single partition and when I access it via any application like Dolphin I want it to be mounted for any user to have write access. If possible I do not want to have to use any mount commands to achieve this but have the system do it without manual intervention. Can someone please explain how I manage this?

TUMBLEWEED Running two Xorg instances - iGPU, NVidia GPU

$

Hi,

I am trying to build a VFIO/PCI passthrough setup. I am currently using an NVidia GTX 1070 video card my for install. I am considering using the Intel GPU ( i6500 ) for day-to-day tasks and passing through the NVidia card to a virtual machine. I would like to keep it available for Linux as well, so I'm considering the following setup:

* Most desktop activities run using the integrated GPU
* (when needed) start a different Xorg instance bound to the NVidia GPU for Steam
* (when needed) start a KVM virtual machine bound the the NVidia GPU

The two final steps won't be done at the same time, but ideally this would be done without rebooting. I would be using the same monitor but with different cables, for instance HDMI for the iGPU and DisplayPort for the NVidia card. If needed I can whip up another mouse/keyboard pair.

Apparently my searching skills are inadequate for this topic, so my question is how can I configure my system for two Xorg instances - each using a different GPU?

LEAP 42.2 rsync performance with autofs/nfs and ssh

Hi,

In a previous thread https://forums.opensuse.org/showthre...lient-sequence I was introduced to autofs and have been happy ;).

However, I have re-started using rsync to back up some key local folders to my NFS server (10.1.1.40) via the autofs mounted folder (/nfs) and am getting some very poor performances.

Using
Code:

rsync -vlrptz --progress --delete ~/data/ /nfs/main/data/
results in very slow/poor transfer speeds, in the order of tens of kilobytes/second and sometimes even locking my system up.

If I used rsync with ssh as I had done in the past
Code:

rsync -vlrptz --progress --delete ~/data/ -e "ssh" root@10.1.1.40:/main/data/
the transfer speed is in the order of tens of megabytes/second and quite robust.

I have read a few blogs but there are mixed opinions on using rsync via nfs. One even suggested that I try directly accessing the nfsserver
Code:

rsync -vlrptz --progress --delete ~/data/ 10.1.1.40:/main/data/
which I haven't tried yet as I am letting my data backup at the moment.

So my question is while I wait for my backup to complete, is there a definitive approach for using rsync via /nfs or should I avoid it and stick to using ssh as some blogs have suggested?

Thanks,
Chris.

LEAP 42.2 Questions gpt, mbr and multi booting

I've decided to re install leap 42.2 from scratch again in some ways accounting for several things that have cropped up while I have been using linux. I've also decided to lay things out for subsequent multi booting. I might boot both leap and tumbleweed for instance.

First thing is to clear up booting. Since using suse and opensuse I haven't needed to worry about it so not totally clear on uefi booting and gpt, Currently I have this. It's an ssd.

Code:

dhcppc1:/home # parted /dev/sda print
Model: ATA PLEXTOR PX-128M5 (scsi)
Disk /dev/sda: 128GB
Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/4096B
Partition Table: gpt
Disk Flags:

Number  Start  End    Size  File system  Name    Flags
 1      1049kB  206MB  204MB  fat16        primary
 2      206MB  128GB  128GB  ext4        primary

Yast shows that I am booting from the fat16 partition using efi. BUT in days of old the first disk found by the bios was used to boot and not knowing how things work now is the boot block on this drive ? If I happened to plug this one into the correct connection it's a pure fluke so for all I know it might be on another drive. I have 2 others a raid 0 and a spare disk.

Also - I understand that when GPT is used there is no need for extended and logical partitions so I just need to create as many partitions on the ssd as I want one at a time ?

LEAP 42.2 No button2 emulation

Just upgraded to leap 42.2 on a laptop with only 2 buttons. For ages I have used the chord of buttons 1 & 2 to emulate the middle button.

But it does not work after the upgrade (from 13.2). I see the line in xorg.conf.d/10-evde..... that asks for emulation was removed but is still in ...rpmsave

Tried restoring it but still no middle button after reboot

What am I missing? Really making the computer useless at present

TUMBLEWEED Help on autorotate screen

Hi,

Refering to https://forums.opensuse.org/showthre...te-tablet-mode

Anyone got auto-rotation of the screen to work? It seems to me that it should work. I've installed iio-sensor-proxy and running monitor-sensor the accelerometer seems to work fine. If anyone have it working or an pointer to how one would go about to get it working it would be much appreciated.

I seem to remember that there were a package with configuration for tablet mode before but I can't seem to find it now.

LEAP 42.2 Bad scree resolution after upgrade

Desktop computer worked OK with 13.1 and 13.22but with newly upgraded to 42.2 the screen has lower resolution. It used nvidia drivers and i added that repository after upgrade but it still persists with the low resolution. Looked at lsmod and I did not see any nvidia module. Think the hardware is nForce2

Hi,

I have downloaded the rpm from adobe and installed it.
It didn't show up in firefox / addons.

I modified the symlink in
/usr/lib64/browser-plugins

I made it point to:
libflashplayer.so -> /usr/lib64/kde4/kcm_adobe_flash_player.so

Still, no flash player plugin in firefox. What's the problem?

LEAP 42.2 FAILURE TO BOOT AFTER REMOVING NVIDIA DRIVERS

$

After a recent attempt to install my nvidia card using YaST, boot ended before loading KDE with the screen shuddering at high speed. I removed the Nvidia drivers by booting from the DVD and mounting the Rescue System. And I used zypper to remove the nvidia repo.

Now my cherished 42.2 appears to go through the boot procedure but stops with:
Code:

ICSNET login:  [    21.462006]  nouveau . . . . . bus: MM10 write of 00000000002 FAULT at 4188ac  [  IBUS  ]
The above is followed by two similar lines.

If press enter I get a login prompt, which works. I have access to zypper but cannot open a konsole (so I can't cut and paste).
I used:
Code:

zypper in -f xorg-x11*
This seemed to make things worse. Everything was working fine before and I don't really need the nvidia card. I prefer to go back the integrated intel graphics situation.

I read some documentation but am afraid of screwing up.

TUMBLEWEED session files not pruned automatically

Good morning,

I like using save sessions so that the opened directories in Dolphin, opened files in Okular, etc. can be opened automatically the next time I boot the
machine and log in to my account. So I enter "Configure Desktop" (systemsettings5)->Startup and Shutdown->Session Management, and set the option "Restore previous session".

I noticed that there are too many saved session files in `~/.config/session` directory. Among them, only the latest ones matter to the system, I think. It seems not normal to have tons of such session files kept.

So I searched and found little information on this. May I ask whether those files are kept intently or there is a bug?

BTW, my environment is,
Code:

openSUSE Tumbleweed: 20170510
KDE Plasma: 5.9.5
Qt: 5.7.1
KDE Frameworks: 5.33.0
Kernel: 4.10.13-1-default

Regards,
CnZhx
