Edit files on remote windows server with Libreoffice. OK on laptop, no go on desktop

Hi all,

New Opensuse user here, but a long time user of Linux. So here's the story.

I have 2 laptops. One runs Opensuse 13.1, one runs Slackware 14.1 and a Desktop PC running Opensuse 13.1.

I attach to a Windows remote server from either laptop over a vpn link as provided by the people I work for, but to the same server as a direct link on the company network from my office.

On the server are many spreadsheets covering things like staff timesheets, rotas etc as well as project planning files and e-mail.

When I want to edit any of the spreadsheets, using either of the laptops, so either Opensuse or Slackware, by doing a simple smb://i.p. of server from the Dolphin file manager gets me onto the server, then a simple click on the necessary file opens it for editing in Libreoffice.

But when doing the same thing on the desktop PC, I get the LO splash screen for a split second, but the file never opens. Trying to open the file from within LO results in the error message, 'you can only select local files'.

So, to my question. Why does opening files for direct editing work from the laptops, but not from the desktop. Especially as the desktop is just running the same as the laptop software wise. It seems to me at least, that on either laptop, the remote directories are being mounted when using Dolphin, but from the desktop they aren't, even though they show up.

So anyone get any suggestions what might be happening, or how to troubleshoot?

TIA
