Hey,
Is it worth buying a Lenovo IdeaPad S540-15 laptop to install OpenSUSE Leap15?
Hardware configuration:
Processor: Intel i5-10210U
RAM: 12 GB in a single slot (second slot free), the maximum amount of RAM - 20 GB
Drive: SSD M.2 PCIe 480 GB
I want everything to work - wifi, camera, bluetooth.
Now I work on an old desktop:
Intel (R) Pentium (R) CPU G630 @ 2.70GHz, 2693 MHz
8 GB RAM
OpenSUSE Leap 15 + Mate (Gnome / KDE did not work properly).
This computer would remain as a file server (SMB, DLNA) and archive but without its own monitor, communication via a remote desktop.
In contrast, the laptop would be used to:
- internet,
- simple photo processing (GIMP),
- simple LibreOffice Writer and Calc documents,
- movies, music, including ripping from CDs / DVDs,
- scanner / printer support (Brother DCP-1622WE - as such works on the desktop),
- VirtualBox (for fun),
- no games.
Mobility is not a priority, 99% of the time will be used at home, 95% at the same desk.
The laptop would be used for 4 - 5 years. An alternative would be a brand new desktop instead of an old one and no laptop. Configuration would be stronger but it would be more expensive because I would also replace the monitor.
Thank you and best regards
