TUMBLEWEED Cannot set correct video resolution with nvidia card and driver

This topic has been raised a few times in this forum, but the solutions proposed unfortunately don't seem to work in my case.

I had been using an nvidia GT9400 card with Tumbleweed for years until nvidia ended support for the G04 series with the latest kernel (I am currently on 5.6.2). I have now installed a GT1030 card and the nvidia 440.82 drivers. These work and the nvidia X Server configuration correctly finds the Dell U2711 monitor, but the maximum resolution detected is only 1680x1050. The native resolution of the U2711 is 2560x1440 and the GT1030 will support much higher resolutions than this on the DVI output.

I have tried changing the console resolution in the YaST bootloader cofiguration to 2560x1440 but this is ignored. /var/Xorg.0.log reports:
"Virtual screen size determined to be 1680 x 1050". Inserting "video=2560x1440" into the Optional Kernel Command Line Parameter had no effect either.

I generated a Modeline with cvt:
Code:
$ cvt 2560 1440
# 2560x1440 59.96 Hz (CVT 3.69M9) hsync: 89.52 kHz; pclk: 312.25 MHz
Modeline "2560x1440_60.00" 312.25 2560 2752 3024 3488 1440 1443 1448 1493 -hsync +vsync

xrandr does not recognise this resolution:
Code:
$ xrandr --addmode 2560x1440_60
xrandr: cannot find mode "2560x1440_60"

If I force it by adding the Modeline above to /etc/X11/xorg.conf the system fails to boot into X Server.

I cannot understand why autodetection is so inaccurate or why the procedures I have described do not work. The only change I made was exchanging the GT9400 using nouveau driver (yes it does work OK with KDE, but is not fast enough for streaming video) for the GT1030 and installing the nvidia driver. Tumbleweed is right up to date.

I would be very grateful for any help with this as my work is being severely hampered by this low resolution.
