13.1 installed 32bit system despite 64bit cpu

after installing 13.1 on a thinkpad x240 which has a 64bit cpu (i7-4600), I noticed that a 32-bit system had been installed.

shouldn't the installer have detected the 64-bit cpu automatically?

is it possible to select installation of x86_64?
