I obtained the numbers below after my problems updating openSUSE 12.3 were resolved,
as can be seen from the thread
https://forums.opensuse.org/english/...se-12-3-a.html
on the same forum.
But I thought that this could be useful at least for guys like me that are trying to install/run openSUSE 12.3 on an old PC with limited amounts of RAM.
So I thought that it might be a good idea to make a separate post of the following.
The output given below results from commands like
'free > xyz.txt'
entered in a console window, mostly XTerm, which seems to consume only little memory,
where xyz is some arbitrary filename.
Using this method, directly after starting up IceWM I get
After starting KWrite (of KDE4) and Konqueror (of KDE4) still running IceWM I instead get
Freshly booting into KDE3 desktop I get
However, to get these quite low numbers for memory consumption, running KDE3 one has to install a bit more than just 'kdebase3-session' in order to (hopefully) prevent to get any KDE4 components loaded silently.
Freshly booting into KDE4 desktop I get
Then with:
KDE4
+ Dolphin
+ Konsole (instead of XTerm)
+ YaST Control Center
+ YaST Software Management
I get
This was about the situation in which my online updates failed.
Starting up into IceWM and running YaST from there, as suggested by wolfi323 in the thread mentionned above,
the updates (as well as installations of other software) run fine.
