TUMBLEWEED After todays update Font Sizes etc broken

$
0
0
After I ran todays update the system defaulted to smallest font sizes for everything and I mean everything. Titles, menus, general text etc. It also defaulted all application windows to a super small size but it did let me change those. The Font prefs for both apps and system are still have the same settings as they should and changing them no longer effects the font sizes. This is for system fonts and apps such as Chrome, Firefox, Thunderbird etc. I am vision impaired so this really sucks.
If I go back to the previous snapshot everything is fine. Only happens with todays update.
Any ideas?

Thanks!

TUMBLEWEED Nvidia drivers are failing

I've been installing nvidia drivers "the hard way" with nouveau blacklisted. I was using 384.111 and after updating it fails to load. I checked to see if new drivers would work, I downloaded 384.130 and 390.48 and both are failing as well.

Since todays TW update (including Gnome nw manager and Kernel 4.16) I cannot connect to the internet anymore. Wifi is connected but no website can be reached. Same with ethernet. Nm shows a „?“, but also shows good signal strength, an IPv4 and DNS. Still wouldn’t give me internet.

TUMBLEWEED Screen flicker after April 08, 2018 updates

$

0
After this morning's Tumbleweed updates, which I believe included a kernel-default and mesa updates, a "mouse related" screen flicker has appeared. The flicker happens only when I move the mouse cursor and the flicker seems much worse if I pass the cursor over items that have a "mouseover" function, such as animated icons.
I run KDE Plasma as my primary desktop, but I have also been able to produce the flicker when in an LXDE session.
Computer is Ryzen X1800 based. AMD RX480 graphics. I use corded Logitech USB keyboard and Logitech USB corded gaming mouse. There have been no hardware changes of any kind.
I have tried killing and restarting X. I have also tried changing the mouse's USB port to no avail.
It's apparently a bug somewhere, but I'm not sure if it's kernel related; Mesa related, or something else.
I'm using kernel-default 4.16 from today's update. Unfortunately, any time I update the kernel, I remove the existing kernel in the same process. So I don't have the option of booting into yesterday's kernel. I could go back to 4.14 if I need to.

Hi, I just upgrade to Leap 15 and its working good. But I'm receiving a message telling that some repos are out of date and may want to use a different server or mirror (for 'openSUSE-Leap-15.0-Update' and 'openSUSE-Leap-15.0-Update-Non-Oss'). I only changed source of my repos to 15.0:

TUMBLEWEED Confusion over snapper "default" snapshot

$

Love snapper/btrfs. It has saved me on numerous occasions. However, despite reading up on it I seem to have some basic confusion.

Here's my current snapshots

Code:

$ sudo snapper list
[sudo] password for root:
Type  | #    | Pre # | Date                          | User | Cleanup | Description          | Userdata
-------+------+-------+-------------------------------+------+---------+-----------------------+--------------
single | 0    |      |                              | root |        | current              |
single | 1    |      | Sun 15 May 2016 07:47:50 AEST | root |        | first root filesystem |
single | 2032 |      | Wed 04 Apr 2018 22:14:04 AEST | root |        |                      |
pre    | 2050 |      | Mon 09 Apr 2018 12:11:04 AEST | root | number  | zypp(packagekitd)    | important=yes
post  | 2051 | 2050  | Mon 09 Apr 2018 12:18:25 AEST | root | number  |                      | important=yes

$ sudo btrfs subvolume get-default /
ID 2543 gen 1723908 top level 258 path @/.snapshots/2032/snapshot

$ sudo snapper status 1..2032 | wc -l
387527

$ sudo snapper status 2032..2050 | wc -l
71475

$ sudo snapper status 2050..2051 | wc -l
40356

My main confusion is that I would expect 0 to point to the latest snapshot 2051 (perhaps after reboot?), thus allowing me to delete 2032. Why is 0 pointing to an "earlier snapshot"?

Also, why can I not delete 1? Essentially resetting the "base" to the current snapshot?

TUMBLEWEED Terminal login persists - new kernel, potential broken drivers or desktop manager

$

Am on tumbleweed version 20180406, kernel 4.16. My graphics card is an NVIDIA GTX 680. Have read this thread but am not sure it is applicable to my situation, as even choosing the old kernel version (4.15.13) from GRUB advanced options still leads to a terminal login. And, even if it is, I am not 100% sure on how to apply the patch so any help there would be great too.

Also apologies for not knowing how to format with inline code, I can't seem to find that option anywhere in the editor.

I have tried a few things:

Running
Code:

startkde
, which gives
Code:

$DISPLAY is not set or cannot connect to the X server.
So then running
Code:

startx
(which is apparently deprecated, but it was still a suggested fix) says that
Code:

xinit failed. /usr/bin/Xorg is not setuid, maybe that's the reason? If so either use a display manager ...
I have tried running
Code:

sudo zypper dup
, but it says everything is up to date.

I have tried going through
Code:

sudo yast
to install nvidia drivers (playing around with either
Code:

x11-video-nvidiaG04, xf86-video-nouveau, and xf86-video-nv
whilst making sure to edit
Code:

/etc/X11/xorg.conf
), but all versions do not seem to give the GUI login.

I have also played around with editing
Code:

/etc/sysconfig
to change my desktop manager, but that has given no success either (sddm or kdm both). Running
Code:

systemctl status sddm
shows that it is active, however there is a line:
Code:

Process: 1829 ExecStartPre=/usr/bin/plymouth quit --retain-splash (code=exited, status=1/FAILURE)
which might be of use.

Any help would be great!

LEAP 42.3 Security check №.2 (Yast)

Hi,
So I check security of a non-complex system via Yast.
https://imgur.com/a/eUb5B
https://imgur.com/a/wX1sL
Secure file permissions make you enter root password more times.
I don't know what is Ok for DHCP daemon? It is probably not installed.

Yast also warns about additional services. It seems that Susefirewall init should be on. Bumblebeed is probably not a problem, and Yast is just being too strict? Actually It showed another sevice getty(insert number here). I followed it's instructions and turned off getty(something). Search didn't help in finding out, what is default getty service.
Thanks in advance.

p.s. forums don't let me upload img files!

TUMBLEWEED TigerVNC vs SDDM vs Yast vs XDMCP ... need persistent access to Display :0

$

Hi,

On recently patched ( 04-07-2018 ) Tumbleweed despite going over https://en.opensuse.org/VNC ... I am unable to get a working setup that lets me get remote access to the physical console on Tumbleweed. I get a black screen, in the VNC viewer which I presume is SDDM lacking XDMCP support as documented in the tail end. However it also says that Yast will configure things for XDMCP support ( yet I am still seeing SDDM after a reboot ).

So is there a recipe for getting remote access to the physical console while still allowing for KDE5. I am not wedded to VNC either. If there is some other way to get to the physical console, I am fine with that. The primary requirement is access to the physical console ( which may / may not be logged in ) amd something that is not fragile.

Thanks!

LEAP 42.3 Looks like H/W acceleration isn't working in Firefox

$

Hello,
Just installed OpenSuse 42.3, and looks like hardware acceleration is not working in firefox.
The IGP is Intel HD Graphics on Celeron 3215U (In Windows, the driver that works is the one designed for HD Graphics 5500).
Everything else is working, including desktop 3D effects (like Glide, Wobbly Windows, etc).
Here's what's displayed in firefox troubleshooting page:

The problem I'm facing is that parts of firefox flicker. When I start typing in the "search" box beside the url bar, firefox shows a list of suggestions- this suggestions list part constantly flickers (goes black, shows suggestions, goes black, shows suggestions,.....). The same happens when I click on the the three "--" bars to open the firefox menu- the menu flickers like the search suggestions. This laptop was running firefox in Windows just a while back before i formatted the hard disk, and these problems were not present there- hardware acceleration was working in Windows and nothing was flickering.

This is a fresh install, and so far all I've done is:
1. Installed multimedia codecs and switched system to 'pacman'.
2. Updated opensuse.
3. Installed VLC from pacman using yast
4. Changed the theme as you can see
5. Enabled some desktop effects (Glide, Wobbly)
6. Installed three firefox add-ons (Ghostery, Ad-block plus, KProxy) all from the official firefox add-on page. (The flickering persists even if I disable all three add-ons and restart firefox).

Is there a way to fix this? Perhaps enabling H/W acceleration will do the trick?
Any help will be greatly appreciated. I'm no Linux expert so please don't use hi-tech words in the reply...
Thanks..
