TUMBLEWEED Kmail+Akregator verursachen Sound-Fehler

$
0

I have formatted an external partition with ext4 and am unable to write to it without Super Dolphin. How does one change permissions (and labels if possible)?
I have tracked down enough cli to get this far...
Code:

mount|grep /dev/sdb4
/dev/sdb4 on /run/media/<user>/6bf099e8-75ed-4e46-83da-60b58994e4ad type ext4 (rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,data=ordered,uhelper=udisks2)

Thank you kindly,

Interactive scripting of aide

$

aide is a simple piece of the puzzle for detecting file modifications during an intrusion. It does have its limitations (e.g. rootkits, etc). One limitation, if I understand it correctly, is that if you want to utilize key signing of the database you have to compile it yourself. It is also recommended that the database be stored on read-only memory. Since, I back my system up fairly regularly I don't worry so much about whether an intruder is going to delete the database as much as I am concerned about them modifying the ASCII database.

The limitation to my script is you cannot schedule the tasks, but must run them interactively. There are other good solutions for running interactive tasks across multiple systems, and I will leave that for another time.

Here are my scripts for protecting the database. I'm sure others can write better bash scripts ;)

aide-init.sh
Code:

#!/bin/bash

# Initializes/re-creates the aide database
# This should be run any time changes have been made to the system

cd /var/lib/aide

# Backup your old aide encrypted database
if [ -f aide.db.aes ]
then
  mv aide.db.aes aide.db.aes-`date +%F-%H-%M-%S`
fi

# Housekeeping: This file should not exist, but remove it if it does
if [ -f aide.db ]
then
  shred -z -n 7 -u aide.db
fi

# Housekeeping: This file should not exist, but remove it if it does
if [ -f aide.db.new ]
then
  shred -z -n 7 -u aide.db.new
fi

# Create a new aide.db.new file
aide --init

# Prompt for a password and store it in "$pwd"
IFS= read -s  -p Password: pwd
# Store the password in a temporary file
echo -n "$pwd" >$$.tmp
# Give the user a newline after they hit enter

# Encrypt your new aide database

# Make the aide.db.new and temporary password file non-recoverable
shred -z -n 7 -u aide.db.new *.tmp

aide-check.sh
Code:

#!/bin/bash

# Compares the aide database against the current system

cd /var/lib/aide

# Housekeeping: This file should not exist, but remove it if it does
if [ -f aide.db ]
then
  shred -z -n 7 -u aide.db

# Housekeeping: This file should not exist, but remove it if it does

LEAP 42.3 GUI broken due to failed NVidia driver installation

$

Hardware: Dell Mobile Precision 7520 (Laptop)
Video: NVIDIA Quadro M1200, Intel HD Graphics 630
OS: OpenSUSE Leap 42.3

Current Operational Problem: Boots into terminal screen. Screen flashes once per second.
How this happened: Attempted to install the proprietary Nvidia driver using the instructions for NVIDIA_the_hard_way.

Other things I tried:
  • Reverting to nouveau in a desperate attempt to get my computer working again. It failed.
  • Installing RPM redhat video drivers from the Dell website for this laptop. The Nvidia installation failed due to newer kernel.
  • Reinstalling proprietary driver. It claims success but does not boot up properly.

I'm not exactly sure how to proceed. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

automated backup of cpanel-based cloud servers

$

NOTE: I have changed some values in my code to hide critical information.

I needed to automate a full backup of a remote cpanel-based server. My limitations were:

I needed to store the backup to a Drobo 5N NAS which does not offer scp or the ability to mount the file system using sshfs.

I didn't want to copy the backup across the network to my local server, copy the backup to the Drobo, and then delete the backup from my local server.

I also wanted to perform most of the tasks from the cloud server, except for moving the backup to my local network.

My first step was to go into the cpanel, find the full backup button, click the button, and copy the URL.

I then logged out of the cpanel, and attempted to go to the URL I had copied. It re-directed me to this page:
https://cpanel.mysite.com/login

I copied the source for that login page.

Parsing the source code I pulled these forum fields out (yours may vary):

goto_uri=/frontend/paper_lantern/backup/dofullbackup.html
goto_app=""
user
pass

The first 2 were automatically filled-in hidden fields. The last 2 were asking for the username and password in order to proceed to the goto_url.

Next I installed sshfs:
Code:

zypper install sshfs
I then created the directories as ~/mnt/mysite

In order to automatically mount the remote server's file system I needed to be able to ssh to the server without a password. Good instructions for that can be found here:
https://www.linuxtrainingacademy.com...thout-password.

I tested my mounting by utilizing this command (modify as needed.):

Code:

# -p 87 is because the hoster does not utilize the default ssh port.
sshfs myuser@mysite.com:/home/myuser /home/d3vnull/mnt/mysite/ -p 87

This particular remote server when performing a full backup creates the backup-*.tar.gz file on the root of the file system.

Next I connected the remote server through ssh and created two directories:

/backups
/bin

Inside of bin I created two scripts.

fullbackup.sh

Code:

#!/usr/bin/bash

# The purpose of cd here is simply because the wget produces a cookie file.
cd /home/myuseri/bin

# This performs the full backup
wget -q -O /dev/null --user-agent=Mozilla/5.0 --save-cookies cookies.txt --post-
data 'goto_uri=/frontend/paper_lantern/backup/dofullbackup.html&goto_app=""&user
=myseri&pass=mypassword' --no-check-certificate https://cpanel.mysite.com/login

I used the cpanel interface to cron fullbackup.sh for 12 midnight.

mvbackup.sh

Code:

#!/usr/bin/bash

home='/home/myuser/'

backups="${home}backups/"

# Check to see if a backup file exists
if [ -f ${home}/backup-*tar.gz ]
then
  # If a backup exists then move it to the backups directory and cleanup any cookie files leftover from the wget
  mv ${home}backup-*tar.gz ${backups}
  rm ${home}bin/cookies.txt
else
  echo No backup!
fi

I used the cpanel interface to cron mvbackup.sh for 2 AM.

Finally, on my local server I created mysite_backup.sh to pull the backup off the remote server, place it on the Drobo, and recover the space on the remote server.

mysite_backup.sh

Code:

#!/bin/bash
nahome=/home/myuser/
mnt=/home/d3vnull/mnt/mysite/

# Check the remote server file system is mounted. If it isn't then mount it.
if [ ! -d ${mnt}backups ]
then
  sshfs myuser@mysite.com:${nahome} ${mnt} -p 87
fi

# Check to see if there are any backups.
cd ${mnt}backups/

NOTE: This test failed if more than one backup was on the server.
#if [ -f backup-*gz ]

# Used this test instead.
if [ `ls -1 backup-*gz 2>/dev/null | wc -l ` -gt 0 ]
then
  # Copy the backup to the Drobo using the smbclient
  smbclient //192.168.200.100/Data -W WORKGROUP -U 'DroboOUser%DroboPassword' -c 'cd \backups\;prompt;mput backup*gz;exit'

  # Remove the backup archives from the remote server.
  rm ${mnt}backups/backup-*gz
fi

The cron command runs mysite_backup.sh at 6 AM.

Hope this helps someone.

When I try to install Ableton Live 9 Lite using PlayOnLinux, everything goes smoothly until the installer opens. The installer shows the general "If you want to install click 'Next' ". When I click the 'Next' button, the installer disappears and POL shows a crash message.

TUMBLEWEED problem on installing media codecs

I installed tumbleweed on my new ryzen 5 desktop, and trying to install the media codecs according to the sticky thread on this forum.
I get "Problem: nothing provides libwebp.so.7()(64bit)..." on most of them, so I can't install them, because I can't find it anywhere.I'm on 2018-05-02 snapshot, if that matters and had a fresh install.
Can someone help please?

LEAP 42.3 Nvidia 396 from CUDA repo - Vulkan does not work

I've tried installing Nvidia 396 short term branch driver from CUDA repo. While driver installed and seems to work ok, there's one (serious for me) issue - Vulkan is not working.
I've found this topic on Nvidia forums:

https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/t...18-and-vulkan/

I assume that might be it - any ideas what can I do to fix this problem on OpenSUSE 42.3? Where can I get missing library? Is there an option to just compile , without installing Nvidia package that can be downloaded from Nvidia site, then just copy the offending part (I know - it's dirty, but would it work)?

Initially I thought it might be due to older vulkan libraries in 42.3 - but even after upgrading those using X11/Wayland repo to 1.1.7 it still failed.

TUMBLEWEED How to Fix Codelite error while loading shared libraries

Hello,

After installing Codelite it wouldn't run. When ran from the menu it just flashed on the screen and disappeared. It gave the following error when ran from a konsole.

Code:

# codelite
codelite: error while loading shared libraries: libplugin.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Make a text file in /etc/ld.so.conf.d/ and name it codelite.conf. Put the following path to the libraries in it.

Code:

/usr/lib64/codelite
Then run

Code:

sudo ldconfig
It should be able to find the libraries now and it seems to be working.

TUMBLEWEED Accidentally deleted openSUSE-Tumbleweed repository, how do I re-add it?

Hi,

On my Tumbleweed system I accidentally deleted the openSUSE-Tumbleweed repository with ZYpp (sudo zypper rr 13 was the command that did it). To try to get it back I looked at https://software.opensuse.org/package/vim (choose a package at random), clicked on the official release, went to its download page in the hope it would have instructions on how to add the repo it belongs to, which I presumed would be openSUSE-Tumbleweed, but no it's openSUSE:Factory (which I have added, I didn't delete factory, I deleted openSUSE-Tumbleweed, saying this to clarify). I've also tried going to https://build.opensuse.org/project/s...E%3ATumbleweed, in the hope it'd have the download link I seek (which I'd find by clicking on a package at random, going to the download instructions, etc.), but no there's no packages in that project. I read the text that that said this repo was essentially a openSUSE:Factory snapshot, but if this is the case why did I have a separate openSUSE-Tumbleweed repo added, along with openSUSE:Factory (instead of the two being the same thing...)?

I'm essentially here hoping you good folk can help straighten this out for me, providing me with a way to re-add this repo.

Thanks for your time,
Brenton

TUMBLEWEED Nitroshare

Hello all, i am new to openSUSE. I have a fresh install of Tumbleweed. One of teh applications that I would like to use is Nitroshare. I took a look around and installed it (with the 1-click I believe). Ok, so it runs and my other computers see it on-line. Every time I try to send something to this computer, I receive the message "failed Host unreachable". I tried a few different installs for nitroshare and one of them gave a message about a problem listening to port 40818. Honestly I cannot remember the exact message.

When i compare the Nitroshare settings between my other 2 linux machines (PCLinuxOS) and the openSUSE Nitroshare, the only difference that I see is on the other computers, the option "Allow local applications to interact with Nitroshare" is check but on the openSUSE Nitroshare, that option is greyed out.

Does anyone have any ideas? Any help would be useful. I have looked at the firewall in openSUSE but it is extremely confusing trying to figure out how to open a port of allow an application thru if that is the issue.

As a sidenote, i also tried installing Dukto. From the openSUSE i can send files but when it comes to receiving files, everything fails. So, seeing that 2 sharing apps always fail at sending anythig to the openSUSE computer, I have a feeling that there are some mystery settings that i do not know about. KDE Connect also does not see my tablet while the other two (PCLinuxOS) machines have no issue "out of the box.

Any info would be helpful

Thanks in advance
Steve

LEAP 42.3 Bypassing OpenDNS

OpenDNS is enforced on my router. The proxy category is blocked, so I can't use that method. I also can't just input the raw ip into the browser. Anybody have any ideas as to what would work? I'm the only Linux computer so maybe there's something Linux specific?

OTHER VERSION Leap 15.0 - first of all: Respect!

I have tried it from beginning, and first impressions were very poor and made me doubt a lot. Meantime however, it has become my favorite operating system as had been Leap 42.3 before, and now it even recognizes my Eaton UPS without any problems (e.g. till today, Tumbleweed does not)!
Everybody should understand any SUSE edition requiring hours of work whenever picked for a setup due to individual needs as asked by myself. Though, the only thing really to count is the fact lastly becoming successful. Me, hardened by years of nearly desperate failures on several Linux systems I don't persue any more setup other than using Xfs partitions and the Xfce desktop only. So finally I want to give you a few hints for a happy setup hereby:
1. Always activate "untested repositories" before going on to check the desktop environment and other software you like to get installed,
2. for partitioning unconditionally check using the expert installer, and never forget starting from preexisting partition layout only (!!!),
3. make ample usage of the great offerings of SUSE repositories, as well catching Yast's possibility of setting priorities and all those other switches evenly including package taboos - the process of learning might be hard for you, but at last it will make you very glad,
4. if longing for perfect multimedia features be aware of having to add or update a two dozen packages from Packman repository : )

Good luck, and be the Anciestors with all of you!

TUMBLEWEED Zypper dup stuck at btrfsmaintenance 100%

I've run zypper dup and all seemed to be just fine until btrfsmaintenance 0.4 was being installed and got stuck at 100% for over 20 minutes now. I found a similar situation in a thread from March, but couldn't find a solution. There doesn't seem to be much hdd activity. I am using the default repositories plus science, non-oss, and packman. Has anyone had this problem? Any clue on what to do? Thanks in advance!

LEAP 42.3 How2:dual boot (windows 10, leap), after adding an nvme ssd for installation of 2nd version of suse

$

bios options are limited: Dell xps 8920.
allows choice of "RAID" or "AHCI"
secure boot is enablled.

With "RAID", windows 10 boots and sees (currently empty) Samsung nvme ssd. It is
unformatted and I don't intend to use it for windows. Windows runs fine.
If I boot into leap 42.3, which resides on a sata disk, that works fine, too.

I wish to install a 2nd version of linux on the nvme ssd.
But lsscsi and lspci don't see the nvme ssd.

Advice on various web support blogs says: change bios from "RAID" to "AHCI" to get
linux to recognize nvme ssd. But that will prevent booting windows.

Worse, when I try changing the setting in the bios to "AHCI" I get a warning from the Dell bios: windows may
be unbootable and require reinstallation. HP documentation says the same.

1. Is that true? Why doesn't resetting the bios to "RAID" after installing linux on the nvme ssd, restore the windows boot process?
If it does, then I simply have to remember to reset the bios each time I wish to switch between linux and windows.

2. If setting "AHCI" and then booting, irreparably messes up windows, then is there a work-around which enables me to employ the nvme ssd as a linux
boot disk with the Sata controller in RAID mode?

I have read advice to set "AHCI", disable secureboot, boot into windows and let it fix the mess. Hmmm. I haven't enjoyed much success
letting windows fix messes.

I had believed that, when in RAID mode, the Sata controller enables both RAID and AHCI communications. Where am I going wrong?

My New Recommendation for Adware, Malware, Spyware protection

https://github.com/jedisct1/dnscrypt-proxy

And,
The reasons for using this are far more than just as a protection against Adware, Malware and Spyware.
It's also one of the relatively few ways that sets up an encrypted DNS connection between your machine and the public DNS server.

Strictly speaking,
A DNS proxy isn't quite the same as setting up a system proxy because your machine could still connect to forbidden Internet sites by IP address, but generally everything on the Internet is accessed by Domain Names and if intrusive apps decided not to use DNS, they would be unable to respond to simple blocks and shutting them down would be much easier than if they could automatically resolve to a new address whenever a resource was taken down.

Installing on openSUSE
Follow the Linux Install instructions... download the latest x64 Linux binary, extract to a suitable location, and follow the instructions.
https://github.com/jedisct1/dnscrypt...allation-linux

Note that the Documentation doesn't really understand the problems associated with editing /etc/resolv.conf directly, and their solution is to set the file to read-only after you've edited it. Better is to follow the instructions embedded in the openSUSE /etc/resolv.conf file to edit the /etc/sysconfig/network/config file appropriately (setting a Static server IP address to 127.0.0.1).

By default, when you start up dnscrypt-proxy, it will automatically test connections to a long list of public DNS servers that support dnscrypt, and select the fastest. No manual configuration needed.

After the above, you'll have encrypted DNS sessions set up, but not yet blocklists.
You can ignore the section about systemd, AFAICSee those issues are non-existent on openSUSE.

Configuring Blocklist support

You can follow the instructions to configure "blacklist.txt" but to generate current blacklists, you'll need to run the blacklist file generator at https://github.com/jedisct1/dnscrypt...s-blacklist.py

You can either clone the entire project directory or download/copy the blacklist generator script from the above link.
When you run the generator script, it goes out and downloads the latest versions of more than a couple dozen public blocklists and generates a file you can use. Of course, you can modify the script to add or point to additional blocklists or otherwise modify however you wish. That's really nice to be given this good a start and the ability to modify granularly.

And, it's all FOSS.

Enjoy,
TSU
