mingw confusion, is it another wine ?

$

Hi Guys

I have ofcourse googled but that did not help much.

Mingw seems to be something made by the gnu(gnu is not Unix) guys.

It seems to be windows for Linux, and that's were my confusion starts.

Wine is already windows for Linux ?

The dependencies, of a program called Carla seems to need both mingw and Wine.

How does this work ?

You need to compile twice ? :O

When I search in YAST, I do find allot of mingw related stuff, but which one do I need ?
Do I have to talk to the Carla developer? ( I already know he knows allot about debian / ubuntu, but not openSUSE.)

I think I found the right package, but I am beyond lost, what to do with it.

mingw32-binutils

LEAP 15.1 Virtualbox Virtualization repo 6.1.4 build 530 - no resize of windows

For those of you running OpenSUSE Virtualbox 6.1.4 and have updated to 530.x versions.
No guest can be resized. the guest seem to run the latest version fine - the host not.
I have had to go back to 528.1 on the host to get resizeable virtual machine windows.

I have never gotten VMSVGA to resize - I have to go back to VBOXVGA to get resizeable windows.

If you need 528.1 for your host - I have them and can Firefox send them to you.

you just need to run this to get them installed and disable the Virtualization repo (or it will tell you there is a newer version)

zypper in -f virtualbox-6.1.4-lp151.528.1.x86_64.rpm virtualbox-kmp-default-6.1.4_k4.12.14_lp151.28.44-lp151.528.1.x86_64.rpm virtualbox-qt-6.1.4-lp151.528.1.x86_64.rpm

LEAP 15.1 Problem (maybe) with grub2 update

Leap 51.1

I just did zypper up and apparently a new version of grub2 was installed along with a kernel update and a lot of other things. I was watching the update and saw a series of lines that showed

Code:

The Ohhhh jeeee lines gave ne an insecure feeling! Do I dare try to reboot? I know my system is going to be unstable until I do, but I'm a little afraid grub won't work properly.

I did two other machines using ssh and neither of them showed any problem.
I tried using yast and did an refresh and it showed no problems.

What to do?

LEAP 15.1 X fails to start after latest kernel and nvidia update

$

Hi all,

My gf has an AlienWare with a GTX1080 that refused to startx lately. Sometimes it started, sometimes it didn't. Work around was to start Linux without graphical mode by adding the 3 in the grub kernel line and then after login type startx. I was hoping new updates would resolve this.

Today the laptop received the latest kernel for Leap 15.1 and also the latest NVidia G05 driver 440.82-lp151.25.1

Now it refused to start xorg at all. I can't get it to start. It gives the following errors:

xinit: giving up
xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused
xinit: server error

Ofc this happens at the worst possible time, where the machine is used for a Python class based internet course :(

The machine does have intel GPU on the CPU, but this can only turned on (as far as I know) via a DELL support tool on Windows, which is never ever touched except for Bios updates and AlienWare light changes. So the BIOS setting is still on NVIDIA.

TUMBLEWEED ghostscript crashes: complains about openjpeg

$

I have a bunch of scripts that make maps by using routines contained in the package Generic Mapping Tools (GMT). These normally create output as postscript files, which I then convert to pdf using ps2pdf, a script provided with Ghostscript.

I noticed that in my installation of Tumbleweed Ghostscript crashes complaining about openjpeg:

Code:

gs: error while loading shared libraries: libopenjp2.so.7: failed to map segment from shared object
However, openjpeg is installed and the libraries are found by other packages as ImageMagick. The scripts I use have not changed in the last week, and they worked with my previous Leap 15.1 installation a few weeks ago (unfortunately do not recall which version of ghostscript was used there).

I am trying to sort out if this problem could be due to something wrong in my installation, some solvable linkage problem, or something in Ghostscript (not at all unlikely!).

Is anyone experiencing this problem too?

Thanks.

TUMBLEWEED Cannot detect Brother multifunction scanner on network

$
0

Hello all,

I'm really interested in giving OpenSUSE a try (currently Tumbleweed; Leap 15.1 is a bit dated, but I'm looking forward 15.2), but I'm having a problem... I can't scan from my networked Brother DCP-9010CN multifunction printer/scanner. Getting it to work always involves some amount of... surgery, no matter the distro, but I've so far been able to use it on Ubuntu, Arch and Fedora.

You can find the driver download page here, the scanner-specific link with installation instructions is there, and here is the manufacturer FAQ. OpenSUSE wiki has a nice article that puts together most of the information from Brother, as well as additional troubleshooting details. I've used both the automated Brother driver-install script, as well as a more reliable step-by-step manual install, to no avail.

In details, this is what I did as regards the scanner (printing works)... Naturally, I ran the following as root (including the tests), to avoid permission issues:

Download and install brscan3 drivers:
Code:

rpm -ihv --nodeps --replacefiles --replacepkgs brscan3-0.2.13-1.x86_64.rpm
Add my device, knowing its IP:
Code:

brsaneconfig3 -a name=DCP-9010CN model=DCP-9010CN ip=192.168.1.35
Check that the device is correctly added and can be pinged:
Code:

brsaneconfig3 -q
brsaneconfig3 -d

So far so good. Then, I check if sane detects the scanner:
Code:

scanimage -L
And unfortunately:
Quote:

No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different, check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).
On other distros, I had this problem because sane libraries were often not installed in the right location. For example, on Fedora I had to do the following (based on this FAQ page):
Code:

ln -s /usr/lib64/libbrscandec3.so* /usr/lib
mkdir /usr/lib/sane
ln -s /usr/lib64/sane/libsane-brother3.so* /usr/lib/sane

Then it worked. A similar maneuver was required on Ubuntu 18.04 and later, albeit with /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu instead of /usr/lib.

So, on OpenSUSE tried symlinked libraries in this way (as in Fedora, not Ubuntu)... but it didn't help.

I also tried installing sane-backends-32bit and reinstalling the driver. No luck either.

On Fedora, libnsl is required, while by default it is replaced by libnsl2. On OpenSUSE, libnsl is apparently no longer in the regular repos. I tried downloading it, but the installation returned an error.

At that point I'm at a loss. I've wasted hours trying to solve this on my own... So I'm turning to the community for help.

Thanks in advance!

LEAP 15.1 openSUSE Leap 15.1 - Firefox lädt keine Seiten mehr

Hallo Gemeinde,

TUMBLEWEED files disappear / reappear in my /opt folder - happening on 2 machines now

I have a strange issue. I had some apps that I had loaded without a package manager and put them in the /opt folder. I did this on 2 machines. I created .desktop files and everything worked good. I used all day long and shut down pc. Next day I power it up and all my apps I loaded this way were not in my app list (Im using GNOME on Opensuse Tumbleweed). I could not figure out what was going on, the desktop files were still there but no icons.

I went to my /opt folder and there are no files at all. the /opt folder is there though, just empty.

If I restart my PC everything will work again. I basically have been working around this by booting my pc twice for apps to work.

I would like to find out why this is happening so I can fix it on both machines before I load too many more applications. I have reloaded both machines from scratch in attempt to fix and it happened again - so it must be some kind of update that is breaking it - I need some help troubleshooting this one.

I did see this in debugfs (this error is here even when my /opt folder does show files so may not be related):
debugfs: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sda1
/dev/sda1 contains a btrfs file system

LEAP 15.2 Is there a way to index files without baloo choking system?

$

The process of indexing all files requires a lot of I/O, and can have adverse effects on system responsiveness. Is there some sort of "nice" option for baloo that causes the process it to reduce the read rate? I understand, of course, that it would then take longer to complete.

I'm asking because of a high activity rate on my disk and a total loss of responsiveness. At this time I don't know whether baloo is the culprit.

TUMBLEWEED Monitor doesn't stay in standby when using a DP cable

Having another little issue with my new monitor. I switched the connection from a HDMI cable to a DP one, as there are a few improvements to using DisplayPort instead. This introduces a small annoyance I don't know how to fix.

Whenever the monitor goes into standby, it only stays that way for a few seconds before turning itself back on. Power Management - Energy Saving - Screen Energy Saving is set to 5 minutes; The OS does indeed power the monitor off after this idle time and I even see its power LED indicating that. However it only stays this way for roughly 6 - 8 seconds: Despite not moving the mouse or pressing any key, the monitor always powers back on after this amount before I do so. The problem only started after changing the cable type.

Anyone else experiencing this issue and knows how to solve it? Is this perhaps a kernel / X11 bug that I should report? openSUSE Tumbleweed x64 KDE, amdgpu module, monitor is a ViewSonic VX2758-C-MHD 23.6.

LEAP 15.1 Spacebar opens the first file that has the search word

$

Hi,
I experience unusual behavior of spacebar in specific applications. When I open a folder in an application using Ctrl+O (or open folder icon), open search bar using Ctrl+F and type the file name, pressing space bar automatically selects the first file that has the search word in the file. For example, if the folder has files "test file 1", "test file 2" and "test file 3", typing "test" in the search bar and hitting the spacebar automatically selects "test file 1". So, I am unable to select and open either "test file 2" or "test file 3". A short video showing this behavior is given below
https://www.dropbox.com/s/wf8hanp5vp9mcts/testing-2020-04-08_11.57.16?dl=0

This behavior is observed in the following applications in my computer
Libreoffice 6.3
Evince
Gnumeric
Zim wiki
Abiword

One thing (I think) is common among the applications is they are GNOME/GTK based. I do not see this behavior in KDE applications. Your help in resolving this issue is greatly appreciated.

Does anyone know what it means and what is the solution to make the app run?

Hello, Is there any working tutoria for optimus laptops for Leap? How to make this fully working with bbswitch?
With suse-prime, cards are changing but Nvidia is all time ON in background which make it overheating. With package suse-prime-bbswitch ... its not working at all.
Same problem with Leap 15.1 and 15.2 Beta.
Nvidia MX150 + drivers 440

Thanks
