Hello,

I have a server from 2009. It was running CentOS 5.11. As I need a modern version of glibc, I decided to install openSUSE Tumbleweed. Now I am facing the problem that GRUB2 do not boot (give the generic message "free magic is broken"). I also trying other distros like openSUSE Leap and CentOS 7.0, all using GRUB2.

My question?

Is it possible to not use a bootloader or to use GRUB Legacy instead GRUB2?

Regards,

Hatuey

LEAP 42.1 udev verhindert Upgrade Leap 42.1

Hallo Freunde,
starting udev: ok

etwas später:
haveged starting up

openSUSE 13.2 btrfs issue: advices needed

$
0
0
Greetings !!

I assume I did an error to install my 13.2 openSuSE with btrfs filesystem on root directory...
For now I need advices concerning the situation I'm in and the "solutions" I consider.

Situation:

I have a ssd drive used by grub in dualboot with Windows 7 (I know, nobody is perfect, I need Windows for doing music)
The grub is located in /dev/sda1 on the 120Go ssd drive.

I have more than 30 Go for the root filesystem '/'... I was thinking it was enough... but I was wrong :{

I want to use a new 240 Go ssd drive /dev/sdc to "extend" the original root filesystem... but I have some questions and fears.

When I saw that the root filesystem hat 85% of disk space I went to /root directory to move all the personnal datas on another partition...
But df -h nore btrfs fi df -h / indicated any change --> there were more than 4 Go of data moved, I had supposed that I would drop from
6.2 Go of free disk space to 15Go at least... but it wasn't the case...

What is wrong with my conception on "moving datas from a partition to another" ?

I have no sufficient knowledge of the btrfs filesystem and I'm starting slowly to ask myself to find a solution to switch my system back to ext4.
But for now, I'm in a hurry so I have to find a way to avoid the system to crash as the "episode" when btrfs snapshots took the whole partition and messed up my beautiful 13.2 system.

I configured snapper like this:

Code:

# subvolume to snapshot
SUBVOLUME="/"

# filesystem type
FSTYPE="btrfs"

# users and groups allowed to work with config
ALLOW_USERS=""
ALLOW_GROUPS=""

# sync users and groups from ALLOW_USERS and ALLOW_GROUPS to .snapshots
# directory
SYNC_ACL="no"

# start comparing pre- and post-snapshot in background after creating
# post-snapshot
BACKGROUND_COMPARISON="yes"

# run daily number cleanup
NUMBER_CLEANUP="yes"

# limit for number cleanup
NUMBER_MIN_AGE="1800"
NUMBER_LIMIT="1"
NUMBER_LIMIT_IMPORTANT="2"

# create hourly snapshots
TIMELINE_CREATE="no"

# cleanup hourly snapshots after some time
TIMELINE_CLEANUP="yes"

# limits for timeline cleanup
TIMELINE_MIN_AGE="1800"
TIMELINE_LIMIT_HOURLY="2"
TIMELINE_LIMIT_DAILY="15"
TIMELINE_LIMIT_MONTHLY="2"
TIMELINE_LIMIT_YEARLY="1"

# cleanup empty pre-post-pairs
EMPTY_PRE_POST_CLEANUP="yes"

# limits for empty pre-post-pair cleanup
EMPTY_PRE_POST_MIN_AGE="1800"

The main idea, but I don't know if is it a good idea, is to:

+ clone the "/" directory to the 240 Go ssd using the btrfs utilities that seems to feature such operations, I flew over some tutorials but don't want to try if not accurate in this context.
+ use the original 40 Go ssd partition to link it with /root.

The underlaying questions are:

Is that a good idea ?

In the previous post we promised some news about the self-update functionality and about the LVM support in the new storage stack. We have that… and much more! LEAP 42.1 Repo refresh error "cannot access installation media"

https://1drv.ms/i/s!AggwsX8Lu36rg0ygcuiOZd38Uimz

I just did a fresh install of Leap 42.1 on my EliteBook 8570w, choosing the KDE desktop. While refreshing the repo's I was greeted by the error message above. I noticed that one of the repo's address pointed to the flash drive that I used to boot the iso from. As can be seen here:

https://1drv.ms/i/s!AggwsX8Lu36rg038e5jzhsq-SrAS

I can correct the error message by either putting the flash drive back in and clicking "retry", or obviously by disabling that one repo. Its not clear to me the correct way to fully solve this problem. My first thought was to find the correct URL address, but after searching the package repo's online I cannot find one that fits that repo.

Any thoughts?

Recently transparency in konsole has not been working. It says in the setting "Konsole was started before desktop effects were enabled. You need to restart Konsole to see transparent background."

Restarting konsole doesn't work either.

LEAP 42.1 Fehler beim Booten!

Hallo,
"advanced options for OpenSuse Leap 42.1" öffne es und wähle dort "OpenSuse Leap 42.1, with Linux 4.1.27-27-default"
Dieter

HP Photosmart C4583

LEAP 42.1 kate prints line numbers starting at zero

$

Dear all,

I'm using kate to print code with line numbers. However, it seems that when printing the numbering starts at zero rather than one (that is, the first line is numbered as zero, the second as one, and so on). I would like to make numbering start at one since this is the way the lines are numbered in compilers, debugers, or even kate itself when editing.

Is this a bug? Or is there any option to make line numbering start at one when printing?

This is the information of the kate version I'm using

kate-15.12.3
kate-plugins-15.12.3

I'm using Leap 42.1, kernel 4.4.19-1.

Best,

Lluís

LEAP 42.1 KDE desktop crash

$

I just did a fresh install of Leap 42.1 on my EliteBook 8570w choosing KDE as my desktop. I dual booted with Windows 7 pro and updated all the drivers for the machine which is about 3 years old. I am in Michigan, USA.

While configuring Leap to my likings, dolphin suddenly froze. Eventually I restarted the computer which resulted in a desktop crash. When choosing the advanced boot setting I am given the option to boot either: Linux 4.1.27-27 or Linux 4.1.12-1. The first is the crashed version, the second works and is what I am using as I write this post.

Here is the crash report:

Just before this crash I performed a software update. As mentioned in another recent thread (https://forums.opensuse.org/showthre...67#post2791767), I had a repo enabled which pointed to my flash drive installation media. Because the drive was removed, the software update produced an error. I inserted the flash drive and it ran successfully. Once completed I removed it. Its unclear whether that had anything to do with it. A list of my repo's can be seen on that thread. See my first post and click on the second link.

Thanks,
Roger

installed missing library:

zypper in libSM6-32bit
Code:

The following 3 NEW packages are going to be installed:
  libICE6-32bit libSM6-32bit libuuid1-32bit

also deleted user files from google-earth in:
cd ~/.config/Google/

ll
Code:

total 4
-rw-r--r-- 1 username users 985  8. Sep 16:46 GoogleEarthPlus.conf

rm -r GoogleEarthPlus.conf

and

cd ~/.googleearth

ll
Code:

total 12
-rw-r--r-- 1 username users 6214 12. Apr 2014  GECommonSettings.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 username users 2210  8. Sep 16:11 GoogleEarthPlus.conf

rm -r GECommonSettings.conf
rm -r GoogleEarthPlus.conf

now google-earth-stable version 6.0.3.2197-0 works...

updating to google-earth-stable version 7.1.7.2600-0 and earth only shows black screen and greyed out menus...

is there any chance to use to newer version ?

openSUSE 13.2 Squid / Sarg errors and .xz

All my squid logs are in xz format, I'm unclear if this is now a squid default or an openSUSE default:

Code:

PRETTY_NAME="openSUSE 13.2 (Harlequin) (x86_64)"
Squid Cache: Version 3.4.4
SARG Version: 2.3.6 Arp-21-2013

This would be fine except that Sarg seems to choke on .xz files. And even up to "SARG Version: 2.3.9 Sep-21-2014" the documentation makes no mention of inline .xz /lzma2 like ".gz, .bz2 or .Z"

This gives me gibberish:
Code:

sarg -o ./web-report -d "01/08/2016-01/09/2016" -l access.log-20160801.xz
so if I uncompress the files using xz -d the files:
Code:

SARG: No records found
SARG: End

I have 7 GB of uncompressed logs for the month.

I don't run these reports often but this report generator has been working pretty well for me since 2010 with minor tweaks as versions increment (once variables are set):
Code:

ls ./access.log* -1|sed '/.*/ i\-l'|xargs time sarg -o /var/www/sarg/${SDATESTAMP}-${EDATESTAMP} -d "${START_D}/${START_M}/${START_Y}-${END_D}/${END_M}/${END_Y}"
Yet even uncompressed with a single file hardcoded this finds no records with what appears to me to be the same format of access.log file with unix timestamps that are within range:
Code:

sarg -o ./web-report -d "01/08/2016-01/09/2016" -l access.log-20160802
Format/output:
Code:

    logformat squid      %ts.%03tu %6tr %>A %Ss/%03>Hs %<st %rm %ru %[un %Sh/%<a %mt
    1470024013.792    210 ip.or.FQDN.com TCP_MISS/200 3748 CONNECT urs.microsoft.com:443 - HIER_DIRECT/65.52.108.163 -

I guess I have 2 questions:
1. Does anyone have suggestions as to what I may be doing wrong here? Suggestions for troubleshooting?
2. Does anyone know if Sarg have any intention to support .xz natively?

Thank you.
