Recent years have seen tremendous growth in the container technologies market. From being a non-existent category just a few years ago to being one of the most interesting, fast development and exciting areas. Containers change the way we think about application architecture and the speed at which we can deliver on business requirements. They provide […]

LEAP 42.2 SCANVIRUS Version v2.00 beta4 - offical release

$

Hello all. "Scanvirus" is script application that uses the clamscan engine and uses minimum extra functions. It makes virus scans of multiple drives/devices much easier. IMHO, it's logging system is better than clamscan. It's still a work in progress with some design flaws to work out. It's been run through the fiery forge of bug and design flaw testing. However, any bugs or design flaws not mentioned report them here. Follow the instructions in the script.

Upgraded logging system, removed more design flaws and fixed bugs, menu redesigned. Control-c design flaws to be fixed.

Upgrading: put all folders with viruses into virus folder and delete the rest.

Design flaws:
control-c interrupt leaves folders behind. So, check this with the new '-vf' function.
'-vf' function limited to KDE. If you use gnome, you'll need to change the format.

LEAP 42.2 Browser crash while watching streams with Amdgpu-pro 16.50

Kernel 4.4.62-18.6-default here with amdgpu-pro 16.50.
This combination was working very good for me for the last 3 month. No problems at all.

Unfortunattely i´m having problems now since the weekend. For me its not a crash of plasma,
but with chrome, firefox and vivaldi while watching streams (5 to xx min). Never had this before.
Chrome and vivaldi locks the pc, pic freezes and sound still running, but in loop and usb keyboard/
mouse are with no use. Plugging in again changes nothing. The only way to continue is hard reset.
Firefox is different. It crashes the desktop completely throwing me back to login screen, which i
usually don´t see (autologin). But after login in here, i can continue work like nothing has happend.

There is nothing about it in dmesg or journalctl. No entry for any chase. The only thing i noticed is
in /var/log/Xorg.0.log. It´s flooded with hundreds of entries:

AMDGPU(0): amdgpu_dri2_flip_event_handler: Pageflip completion event has impossible msc 97791 < target_msc 97792

This is a well known problem with ubuntu, but it wasn´t present with leap 42.2 since ......
Something changed the last 3 weeks, so its now here also.
There is a workaround : https://community.amd.com/thread/205475

I´m testing now, if it helps for the browser problem also.
If someone knows more, please help.

LEAP 42.2 Perl version

After upgrading to 42.2 (from 13.3), perl was downgraded from 5.21 (roughly) back to 5.18. I do use some features introduced in the 5.20 series and would need to get up to at least that level. There is a "staging" version for per 5.24 on software.opensuse.org but it cannot be installed without conflict. As the packaging work was already done for earlier openSUSE versions, I was wandering whether those perl versions could be made available somewhere. I strongly suppose that this is an issue for a larger user base.

Thank you in advance.

TUMBLEWEED "Qt4 Settings" under KDE/Qt 5 system not sticking, e.g. app font settings

$

Things with Tumbleweed are getting tougher again... sigh...

The current Tumbleweed is running KDE, Plasma and Qt 5. "System Settings" does set the version 5 settings only. However, some applications still rely on Qt 4, and they do look awful on Tumbleweed since they use a different font and point size for their menu bars and everything else.

There is an app named "Qt4 Settings" in the application kickstarter (twice). It allowed me to set the font to Noto Sans, 10 pt, Regular. This made the "old" applications show a nice look in the same way as the Qt 5 apps. HOWEVER, these settings do not seem to be sticking, they are lost after the next (re)boot. I did run the "Qt4 Settings" both in user and root mode, but that didn't help. BTW, the Regular setting got lost right away after saving and exiting the Qt4 Settings app.

How do I permanently set the font for Qt4 applications to the same Noto Sans, 10 pt, Regular as the Qt5 apps are using? Please help.

Remark: In Leap 42.2, the Qt4 Settings to begin with right after the OS installation ARE set to the same Noto Sans... font as Qt5 has. Why not in Tumbleweed???

Thanks a lot in advance.

TUMBLEWEED perl 5.24.0 missing for rxvt-unicode

Hi there! I tried to install rxvt-unicode via yast, but I get the error message "nothing provides perl = 5.24.0 needed by rxvt-unicode-9.22-1.2.x86_64

Since this is Tumbleweed there is only perl 5.24.1
Can I somehow install the older version too / override the newer perl version?

TUMBLEWEED Recent update killed DNS via router

$

Hi again!

Have a TW 64 KDE updated today.

After reboot the machine can not resolve anything outside the local net and the nets connected via VPN. No DNS.

- Other clients (including TW updated some days ago) are doing fine on the network.
- Changed from Networkmanager to Wicked and back including reboots.
- Changed cables, switches, routers, even complete network.

Nothing helped. Needless to say no update works as well as the servers cannot be resolved.

Now I booted this machine from a TW on an USB-stick and everything works as expected (I'm writing this from the USB-TW booted...).

DNS is in my network ONLY from the router (DNS Resolver with DNSsec via TCP/UDP port 53 to router IP), no way to get out for ANY machine to ANY other DNS-server. Works well for years. Not going to change this.

What has changed recently that could explain the unexpected behaviour regarding DNS?

Many thanks in advance

TUMBLEWEED Powerdown monitor without X running

I'd like my box running tumbleweed in console mode to power down it's monitor output after a timeout, but I'm struggling to get it to work.

I've tried
Code:

setterm --blank 10 --powersave powerdown --powerdown 10
without success. The blanking happens (although that was happening already) but the now blank output is still sent to the monitor keeping it awake.

Anything else I can try?

I don't know where to put this. A question or a rant or what this is something that has been bothering me for some time. I just have never gotten around to mentioning or asking about it.

I have noticed for some time that fresh after an installation and without any altering of the settings by me my system will prompt me for and if I accept will install updates without requiring any root password.

When and how and why did this happen. Was it really intentional?

This has been this was back for a number of openSUSE versions. I don't know many.

Thanks.

TUMBLEWEED OpenSUSE won't start on T420s

These are the exact steps I did:

  • Download openSUSE-Tumbleweed-KDE-Live-x86_64-Snapshot20170516-Media.iso and make USB with imageusb because rufus doesn't work with OpenSUSE
  • Boot from USB on T420s, connect ethernet cable, create new partition table (GPT) to completely delete Ubuntu, start installer
  • Accept all default settings and recommended partition layout (BtrFS root), execute installation
  • Reboot and remove USB

After restarting the computer, it stays on the boot device selection menu as if no operating system is installed.

I load default BIOS settings and tried again, same thing.

Then I reinstalled OpenSUSE again, still same problem.

I've never encountered problems like this with any other distribution of Linux.

Why can't I post attachments?

OTHER VERSION Unable to install RPM package

Hello:
I am using openSUSE Leap 42.1 (x86_64).
Trying to install an RPM package from https://build.opensuse.org/package/b...SUSE_Leap_42.1

After downloading, when clicked, it doesn't start installation, rather it opens the ARK program (which is a file compression/decompression application).

Also tried with YAST, after import, it tells: "Error loading package list from /home/jamil/Downloads/musescore-2.1.0-1.1.x86_64.rpm".

Can you please help, where did I make a mistake ?

Thanks.

/Jamil.

TUMBLEWEED Play video stream with VLC - after reboot only after logout/login

Hi!

TW 64, KDE, latest updates with VLC 2.2.4-15.3-x86_64 from packman repo and matching vlc-codecs.

I have some video streams (raspi cams) running on VLC (http://192.168.0.x:8082) all day and for some time now, the screen on VLC stays black after fresh booting and then starting the stream.

If I do a snapshot in VLC, there is the actual picture from this stream! But VLC stays black.

Solution I found: Log out and log in again, VLC shows video stream.

Any ideas what is going on here?

Code:

TUMBLEWEED Some applications very slow to start up

$

I am running Tumbleweed KDE Plasma 5, over the past few months I've noticed that some applications like kaffeine and chromium are very slow to start up and I can wait quite a long time before anything actually happens and the gui appears. Also some functions in Dolphin are quite slow to initialise the first time after it starts like the delete items window - the outline appears straight away but the contents only appear after quite a few seconds, subsequent delete actions happen instantly. There do not seem to be any errors reported by any of these applications it is just a very slow process to get things going.

Has anyone else experienced this or have any ideas why it is happening?

TUMBLEWEED Configuring bridge for KVM with single interface

$

I just wanted to write this down for anyone spending half a morning on this problem.

For KVM I configured a bridge with YAST. After saving the config I lost connection to the server. With a rescue tool I could mount / and noticed that the file ifroute-eth0 was still there, but YAST didn't made ifroute-br0 containing the gateway. During the initial bridge configuration I tried to change the route in YAST after configuring the bridge I wanted to change the route interface from eth0 to br0 but I couldn't because, of course, br0 didn't exist yet.

So to me it seems like a small YAST problem, which can be prevented by creating the ifroute-br0 in /etc/sysconfig/network containing the text default GATEWAY - br0 before you start creating the bridge.

Also the SUSE documentation explaining how to set up bridging for KVM failed to point this out.

LEAP 42.2 Upgrade from SLES11 to Leap 42.2 - snapsot problem

$

OK, a slightly crazy idea / not fully supported, but for historical reasons I'm on SLES 11 64 bit atm, wanting to got to Leap 42.2 now that OpenSuSe has longer release cycles and more connection to SLES. I have previously managed to "upgrade" from 10.3 (32 bit) to SLES11 64 bit (self-supported) including 32 -> 64 bit change, it was relatively painless actually, and has been running well for 3+ yrs having done the necessary surgery to remove the 32-bit stuff etc.

However the "upgrade" option in Leap 42.2 DVD installer fails at first base because the installer seems to be trying to snapshot the root file system, which is XFS - to my understanding XFS snapshots are not supported. At that point there is no option but exit.

My fstab looks like this
Code:

LABEL=boot        /boot  ext2      defaults            0 1
LABEL=swap        swap    swap      defaults            0 0
LABEL=root        /        xfs        usrquota,grpquota    0 1
LABEL=tmp        /tmp      xfs        defaults                1 2
LABEL=var        /var      xfs        usrquota,grpquota        1 2

Is there a way to pass some option to the installer to not snapshot, or command line option etc ?
I'm happy to work through the wrinkles of old vs. new as before, as I'm working on an offline clone of the running system.
Thanks

Cross-compile for Ubuntu ARM with OBS

$

Hello,
I have HelloWorld test package: https://build.opensuse.org/package/s...asBedrnik/Test
This compiles well for x86 and various distributions - opensuse, debian, ubuntu...
For ARM it only compiles for opensuse_Factory_ARM, other distrubitions are "unresolvable"
Debian: "nothing provides debhelper >= 4.1.16, nothing provides cmake, nothing provides build-essential"
Ubuntu: "nothing provides debhelper >= 4.1.16, nothing provides cmake, nothing provides autoconf, nothing provides automake, nothing provides binutils, nothing provides bzip2, nothing provides gcc, nothing provides gettext, nothing provides libc6, nothing provides libtool, nothing provides libncurses5, nothing provides perl, nothing provides zlib1g, nothing provides dpkg, nothing provides build-essential"

What I'm doing wrong?

If I get it right, there are no repositories for Debian/Ubuntu ARM - is this intention? How do I add it?

There is some 9 years old wiki page describing settings your own OBS instance for cross-compiling, but I would like to test it on build.opensuse.org first, if it is possible.

Thanks.
