LEAP 42.2 Black screen after a huge update to Plasma 5.10 and libQt 5.9

$

Last night I have received an automatic update to Plasma 5.10, libQt 5.9, etc; about 700 packages!
At the end of the update, Plasma5 has crashed immediately.
After restarting the computer (with "poweroff" from a VT), here is what happens:

The kernel starts properly.
The nVidia driver is working properly.
The graphic screen starts and the mouse cursor appears.
The screen remains black and nothing else happens.

From a Virtual Terminal I have tried "sddm" and "gdm"; same behavior.

Now I have managed to get into IceWM through "kdm".
Running whatever Plasma5 application from an IceWM console I get this message:
Code:

symbol lookup error: /usr/lib64/libQt5XcbQpa.so.5: undefined symbol: FT_Get_Font_Format
I have checked the libQt5 repository, but that library does not exist!
What can I do now?

I know that KDE developers have had problems with libQt >= 5.8; Plasma 5.10 beta was compiled against libQt 5.71.
Should I try a downgrade to libQt 5.71?

Thanks.

Здравствуйте!
Сегодня пришла приятная новость: вышла KDE Plasma 5.10. Решил скачать и пощупать образ openSUSE Krypton. Однако не тут то было. K3B не захотел запускаться. При запуске в консоли выдает:

Since a couple of weeks ago my package update stopped with the following message:
#### YaST2 conflicts list - generated 2017-05-31 18:01:28 ####

gcc6-6.2.1+r239768-5.5.2.x86_64 requires libasan3 >= 6.2.1+r239768-5.5.2, but this requirement cannot be provided
uninstallable providers: libasan3-6.2.1+r239768-5.5.2.x86_64[download.opensuse.org-oss_1]

Any help how to resolve this conflict while still keeping gcc6's address sanitizer working would be highly appreciated !

Guide to install Spotify - Manual installation. No scripts.

This is a guide on how to install Spotify on Opensuse

Background

Spotify is a must-have program that I need regardless of OS and distro but Opensuse is one of the few that has no easy way of installing Spotify while its still 100% possible to get it working.
The solution has been these scripts that works only for a little while. The last script that worked needed to be heavily modified to work every time Spotify released a new binary.
The most recent and working being spotify-easyrpm can be downloaded here: https://software.opensuse.org/package/spotify-easyrpm Hopefully this one will last :)
I have not tried spotify-easyrpm. But I experienced the hard way that all those scripts didn't work after trying all day and night for weeks to install Spotify with no luck.
I had enough so I learned how to do it all manually.

Notes

If you're looking for a similar guide for manual installation on Debian look here: https://community.spotify.com/t5/Des...x/td-p/1169449
I was recommended by malcolmlewis to repost my content here after I replied in this thread Can't install spotify on Opensuse 13.2 because the thread would be closed.
This page is a good backup guide in case spotify-easyrpm will break or go unmaintained.
This guide is mainly a new documentation for me because I lost my digital files. It is assembled in parts by scanning my papers with OCR and looking up saved bookmarks.
I have done this both on 13.2, leap 42.1, 42.2. Tumbleweed 13.2 and Tumbleweed 42.2.

I cannot verify It works today. For example on 42.3 or newer. But it worked in December 2016 on 42.2 during x-mas weekends when I was setting up one of my laptops.

Keep this in mind that this is a static installation of Spotify. You will not get any updates on the software because there is no repository added to your system.
This is exactly how I want it. I am in control. If I want to update the software I will do this manually.
If you prefer automated updates I recommend you to take a look at spotify-easyrpm that states that it has somewhat automatic updates via cron. (Don't quote me on that.)

If something don't work perhaps you, we or I can find some solution to what's not working in my guide and PvdMWiki.

The installation

Dependencies needed to rebuild an .deb to .rpm
• Alien: https://software.opensuse.org/package/alien
• Rpmbuild: https://software.opensuse.org/package/rpm-build

Downloading Spotify
You need to find the binary file of the Spotify version you want to use.
You can find the latest version here on Spotifys server: http://repository.spotify.com/pool/non-free/s/spotify/
But what if you wish to use an older version of Spotify on linux? Black or the oldest grey UI.
Spotify remove the old binary when a new is released so keep your copy if you wish to use it long term.
But luckily there is an archive on github that hosts at least some of these older binaries.
Go to: https://github.com/olejon/spotcomman...wngradeSpotify
Download your desired version. Then follow the same steps below.

Installing
Notice:
Of course you need to replace the name of the file with the one you have when typing the terminal command.
Guide by PvdMWiki Retrieved from: http://pvdm.xs4all.nl/wiki/index.php/Installing_spotify_on_openSUSE_12.3

This guide shows you how to install spotify client on openSUSE 12.3
As there is no native openSUSE rpm, we will have to make one ourselves.
The big advantage of this method is, that we will always have the latest version, because when a new version is released, we can bake a new rpm ourselves and don't have to wait on others.

Here are the steps:
1. browse to http://repository.spotify.com/pool/non-free/s/spotify/ and download the appropriate 32- or 64 bit version.
2. install the rpm package 'alien' to convert .deb to .rpm's. This can be found in the opensuse repos, to be exact here: http://software.opensuse.org/package/alien
3. use alien to convert:
Code:

#alien -r spotify-clientxxxxx.deb
spotify-client-0.8.4.103.g9cb177b.260-2.x86_64.rpm generated

4. then, install the rpm:

Code:

#zypper in spotify-client*.rpm
you will get a libcrypto dependency error, but you can ignore that, choose 2:

Code:

Solution 2: break spotify-client-0.9.0.133.gd18ed58.259-2.x86_64 by ignoring some of its dependencies
5. typ the following:

Code:

ln -s /usr/lib64/libnss3.so /usr/lib64/libnss3.so.1d
 ln -s /usr/lib64/libnssutil3.so /usr/lib64/libnssutil3.so.1d
 ln -s /usr/lib64/libsmime3.so /usr/lib64/libsmime3.so.1d
 ln -s libplc4.so /usr/lib64/libplc4.so.0d
 ln -s libnspr4.so /usr/lib64/libnspr4.so.0d

6. that should do it. Have fun!

Installation is now finished!

Possible additional needed steps - In the case that Spotify will not launch

Now when your installation is finished there is a possibility that Spotify will not launch when you start it from the start menu.
If you go to the start menu and click on Spotify and it won't launch we need to find out why its not launching.
Start a terminal. And type spotify. You will get an verbose response.
It will tell you if any dependency is missing. Or what is causing an issue.
Most likely it will be these two or one of these that is missing and needs to be installed

libudev0 https://software.opensuse.org/package/libudev0
libgcrypt11 https://software.opensuse.org/package/libgcrypt11

After installing the missing dependency hopefully Spotify will now launch normally.

Removing visual ad banners

If you wish to remove visual ads from the horizontal bar popping up you can add these entries to your host file.

Code:

127.0.0.1 pubads.g.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 securepubads.g.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 media-match.com
127.0.0.1 adclick.g.doublecklick.net
127.0.0.1 www.googleadservices.com
127.0.0.1 pagead2.googlesyndication.com
127.0.0.1 googleads.g.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 www.omaze.com
127.0.0.1 omaze.com
127.0.0.1 bounceexchange.com
127.0.0.1 rotator.trafficstars.com

Blocking ads on Spotify might be unethical depending on what angle you look at.
The negative is that you are limiting the revenue Spotify and its parts get.
But there are several positive outcomes to this. Mainly blocking out traffic that you don't wish to enter your network. Remember the ad banner malware hijack last year?
And performance improvements both on your network due to the lower traffic if you have limited bandwidth like I do and your computer not having to deal with the rolling ad requests. Spotify still requests ads but the traffic is rerouted to 127.0.0.1. So there is still a performance gain.

There is no way to remove audio or visual video ads because these runs through audio1.spotify.com and audio2.spotify.com and so on servers unless you can decrypt the traffic.
Its packed in with the audio stream and all other data. So there is no single host that pushes the ads on desktop clients.
On Android an IOS its way easier because it runs through 3'rd party servers easy to block with the host file.

TUMBLEWEED Tumbleweed gnome won't lock screen

I installed the gnome version a couple of weeks ago and I am having trouble with screen lock. About 1 in 3 times I think gnome-shell kind of does the restart (like if you did alt-f2 r). About 1 in 3 times it locks as expected, and about 1 in 3 times I think it crashes and ends the session, sending you back to the original gdm login page. This happens whether I select lock-screen from the drop down or if I use Super+L. I have the same problems in Wayland or X

Any suggestions, even for trouble shooting?

Thanks

tmpfs question - mounting directories on it.

It's pretty clear that I can create a a tmpfs mounted on some directory called for instance ramdisk. What's not clear is if there can be other directories under the one mounted as tmpfs and still be in tmpfs?

That is

............... ...Directory A
-RamDisk ./
................ \
....................Directory B

I ask because every example I can find doesn't make any mention of sub directories but more or less do say it's just a file system so i assume should be able to hold a directory structure.

TUMBLEWEED Is Leap better than Tumbleweed regarding stability and performance?

$

I'm currently using Tumbleweed with Plasma 5 Desktop, and I don't have any practical experience about Leap (I was previously with the 13.* branch).

How does Leap compares to Tumbleweed under aspects like stability and performance? I must admit that TW is a really good distro, but sometimes it is a bit slow and little responsive; I suppose that the culprit is that my laptop is a bit old and the hardware is not pristine anymore, but I'm still wondering if Leap could give me a better experience.

I value the rolling release system much, but I could consider to leave it if I can get a sensibly improved performance.

If there is someone that is using both and can offer a concrete comparison, I would be interested to hear their experiences.

TUMBLEWEED Tumbleweed has messed up text in Plasma in VMWare Player

I've done a fresh install of Tumbleweed under VMWare Player (12.5.6) and I'm having an issue with a messed up text/user interface in Plasma. The issue also exists at login (SDDM) as well as in the system configuration application (maybe other places as well - looks to be fine in Dolphin).

This issue has existed on various clean installs of openSUSE over the last year, so it's not something new, but it's the first time I've decided to ask about it.

I've searched all over and I can't seem to find out what the issue might be or how to fix it.

Any thoughts?

LEAP 42.2 Primary monitor off after suspend2ram

$

Just updated to 42.2 and this is a new issue that's been bugging me: When resuming from suspend (to ram) only my external monitor activates. I explicitly have to go into display settings every time and enable the laptop's internal monitor (i.e. it is hard disabled, not just blank/backlight off - the mouse is bounded by the edges of the external monitor and all windows are relocated to it). This was not an issue with 42.1, on resume both would always come up in my extended desktop config as desired.

Possibly related: After the update I had to go into power management and tick "even if external display is connected" to get it to suspend on lid closure again.
I poked around for a setting related to turning off the internal display on lid close, but did not see anything relevant.

Second monitor is connected to HDMI. I have no idea where to start looking... any advice?

dmesg output from wakeup (includes tail end of suspend):

I have a cable modem – 192.168.0.1
I have a SUSE box – eth2:192.168.0.2 eth0:192.168.2.1 default 192.168.0.1 port forwarding enabled & two valid DNS server addresses.

SUSE box can ping and browse anywhere (Internet, and any box on both subnets.
Hosts on 192.168.2.0/24 network can ping 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 but can not ping anything on the Internet. Of course they also can not get out to resolve addresses.

I’ve missed a configuration option somewhere. Can anyone help?

TIA
Bob

TUMBLEWEED Failure to restore from hibernate since last updates

$

For ages now I have been hibernating my desktop system rather than re-booting each day but since I updated it at the weekend it now fails to restore from hibernation but re-boots anyway. Obviously I rebooted after the update. Now I have made no changes to the system or grub2 settings myself, only the last very large set of updates done on the 28th May. I have had a look at the journal but nothing jumps out at me as to why the restore from hibernation fails or perhaps does simply not happen, although I do see an initial message about loading ram disk before it then starts to show the boot up messages. I have checked both the efi setup and grub2 settings but nothing seems to have changed.

Has anyone any suggestions as to how to find out why it is not working as it should please?

Stuart

The default compiler for openSUSE Tumbleweed became GNU Compiler Collection 7 after the release of snapshot 20170529 making openSUSE the first major distribution to have the new compiler by default. While Tumbleweed still has GCC6, GCC7 is now the standard for completing executable binaries for the chameleon’s rolling distribution and the change momentarily slowed down […]

LEAP 42.2 Installed applications do not appear in Start Menu

Hello,

I'm new in OpenSuse, I used to work with other versions of Linux but after years I have decided to install it and work with this great version.

I have an issues with new installed applications from yast2 or apt-get, I can't find them after installation.

I had installed basket and Google Chrome, it does not appear in Start Menu but on the yast2 appear as installed.

Do you know where they could be to open them?

Thanks,
