LEAP 42.2 Program works correctly with primusrun, but not with optirun

On my system, I'm having trouble getting the game Stellaris to run correctly using optirun.

The launcher screen appears, but then when I press launch, no loading screen appears on my screen. The process is using 100% CPU, but seems to be running in the background somehow (it also doesn't appear on the task bar). According to optirun --status, it is using the discrete graphics card.

I came across a thread on the Paradox Interactive forum, where someone said to use primusrun instead, so I tried that. I had to edit the primusrun script a little bit in order for it to get the correct path to the libGL libraries, but then it worked fine!

Btw, the edit I did to the script was this:
Code:

export PRIMUS_libGLa=${PRIMUS_libGLa:-'/usr/X11R6/$LIB/libGL.so.1'}
Why isn't optirun working in this case? According to the Bumblebee tutorial I shouldn't even use primusrun anymore, as the two should be equivalent. Is my optirun configured wrong somehow?

LEAP 42.3 OpenGL problems after changing gfx adapter (nvidia -> radeon)

Problem: When I run glxinfo (as user, or sudo) , I do get this error:

Code:

$ glxinfo
name of display: :0
Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig

After googling a bit, I understood that this might have been caused by installing and un-installing the closed source nvidia gfx driver.
The un-installer seems erroneously not to reactivate reliably all the default drivers which come with the openSUSE system.

Essentially, this is the history of my machine/problem:

  • I started with a fresh installation of openSUSE 42.3 Leap (with an NVIDIA "GeForce 7600 GS" gfx adapter installed (Hardware: DELL Optiplex 360).
  • The stability & performance with the default nouveau driver was really bad, so I decided to install the appropriate closed source NVIDIA drivers (nvidiaG02-304.135) as described in the support database Portal [SDB] (https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_drivers).
  • The system then was much more reliable and performant, but still not acceptable. So I un-installed the closed source driver (again as described in the SDB)
  • Then I replaced the NVIDIA gfx card by an AMD Radeon HD 6450 adapter.
  • Finally I rebooted the system, logged on (Plasma 5) and checked the driver: "radeon" - as expected. The system seems to work fine now, only that the tools glxinfo/glxgears etc. all fail as described above...

So far I have re-installed all the MESA drivers - as suggested by some posters - but to no avail.

Any help is highly appreciated!

Cheers,
Hardy

OTHER VERSION Cannot upgrade openSUSE 12.1 to openSUSE Leap 42.3

The openSUSE Leap 42.3 download web page says "If you’re already running openSUSE you can upgrade by booting from the DVD/USB"

I am trying to upgrade openSUSE 12.1 with Installation Media - Intel 64-bit (x86_64) iso downloaded from the Leap 42.3 web page. and I get the following message:

The installed product (openSUSE 12.1) is not compatible with the product on the installation media (openSUSE Leap 42.3).

** While it says "Installation Media - Intel 64-bit (x86_64)" doesn't x86 suggest it has a 32bit installer as well as 64bit, or is that only in the Windows world?

** Is this my problem because of a 32bit installed version?

** What do I need to do to upgrade to openSUSE Leap 42.3?

I really don't want to start from scratch if I can help it :(

I'm planning to upgrade my data storage,

Of is in the past time a better filesystem for a 10TB HD

TUMBLEWEED Plasma5 has lost some scrollbar arrows sometime between 20170701 & 20170725.

Hello. I've been on the verge of writing this post for the past couple of months, but kept holding off in the hope that "it'll be alright, surely the next TW zypper dup will fix it"... but it never has.

Native Plasma5 pgms like KInfoCentre, KSysGuard, Dolphin... are not affected by this problem. Certain other pgms are affected, eg, Thunderbird, KMyMoney, LibreOffice... I use these pgms every day, & so the problem is constantly "in my face" & thus very irritating.

The problem is that these various pgms' vertical & horizontal scrollbars, for the past couple of months, have lost their arrows at both ends of the bars, despite the Settings still showing these as being selected & thus supposedly active. As such, nowadays in all the affected pgms i can only scroll by grabbing the scrollbar with the mouse pointer & dragging it in the desired direction. No longer can i scroll simply by clicking on the arrows, as they no longer exist.

I first began using TW in May this year, & back then this problem did not exist. I have TW KDE on both my Tower & Lappy, & both now exhibit this problem [for months]. In Tower i also have multiple TW VMs [so i can do various tests / experiments without endangering my real TW]. These various TW VMs are all at various different snapshot dates, & so today i have been able to discover that the TW 20170701 snapshot [Plasma 5.10.2] was GOOD, but by the time of the 20170725 snapshot [Plasma 5.10.4] the problem already had begun. All snapshots after that, including up to at least 20170904 [Tower, Plasma 5.10.5] & 20170909 [Lappy, Plasma 5.10.5], have continued to have this problem.

I also have a Leap KDE 42.3 VM, & it does not have this problem. Of course, its Plasma version is much older, so that's not necessarily a surprise.

The fault seems not to be caused by the specific pgms themselves. I proved this by, in the 20170701 snapshot VM, firstly checking that LibreOffice & KMyMoney scrollbars were good [re arrows], then i manually updated both those pgms with zypper up to the current versions... the scrollbars are still good [arrows still present].

Here's pics from the 20170701 snapshot; KMyMoney [1st & 2nd] & LibreOffice Writer [3rd]:

Here's the corresponding pics from Tower's real 20170904 snapshot:

Oh, there's a limit of 4 pics per post, so i'll put these final two in a separate post.

I use identical settings in all these installations, as follows:
1. Workspace Theme
  • Look & Feel = openSUSE
  • Desktop Theme = Oxygen

2. Icons
  • Theme = Oxygen

3. Application Style

  • Widget Style = Oxygen
  • Window Decorations = Plastik
  • GNOME Application Style [GTK]
    • GTK2 Theme = oxygen-gtk
    • GTK3 Theme = Emacs

Do other people also experience this problem? Does anyone have any solutions please [note, the problem persists with non-Oxygen themes, but i dislike all those aesthetically, so this would not be an acceptable solution even if they did work]?

LEAP 42.3 Serious graphics lag e.g. when dragging windows

Hi all!

I just upgraded from 42.2 (online dup) to 42.3 and everything went fine. But now I have a very slow reacting screen: when I hold the mouse button down and move a window on the screen the full window follows time lapsed with appr 1 inch distance on screen when moving fast (and keeps following former mouse movements for appr 1 second after release). With 42.2 everything was OK.

To nail down the root cause I can provide the following additional observations:
* Graphics card is a radeon HD 4200. glxgears is OK.
* Full HD video is running fine and without significant CPU load (appr half a core of two) within VLC
* the described lagging doesn't produce a signifcant CPU load (maybe 25 %)
* lagging can also be observed when e.g. panning a photo in darktable

What additional information do you need to get closer to the root of this problem?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks a lot

My system Susie Linux 42.2 Linux 4.4.79-18.26 now consistently freezes on boot and can not be shut down. I have to unplug my computer to get out of this and can then boot Susie Leap 42.2 Linux 4.4.79-18.23 I updated regularly until this problem and am now afraid that if I update the only version that works will disappear. Is there a simple way to fix this issue? 1. Could I simply re install Susie 42.2 from a disk on top of what I have now? 2. Or could I erase 4.4.79-18.26 ? 3. Or if I ran all of the new updates would that fix it? Aren't the data files on their own partition so they are safe?

Hi there,

What is going on with SUSE Studio?Base templates are like 100k years old. Not to mention that error 500 "sorry we ran into a bug" is nearly becoming a homepage on SUSE Studio really. Is it dead or what?

LEAP 42.3 Thunar video thumbnails

Has anyone got video thumbnail previews working for Thunar under LEAP 42.3?

I have enabled the packman repo and installed ffmpeg and ffmpegthumbnailer plus tumbler is also installed. I have also set Thumbnails to 'Always' show under the thunar Prefs but I still don't get any video preview icons.

I'm sure that under other distros, installing tumbler installs an actual binary that can be run from the terminal whereas under opensuse the tumbler package only seems to include a library. This may explain why its not working?

Thunar is my file manager of choice but if anyone has video thumbnails working under Caja or Nemo, please let me know how!

I must have fat-fingered something after a screen save
and now all I get is IceWM X11 as my desktop.
I tried editing displaymanager, but no luck.
I cannot find yast anywhere because it is IceWM.

I just want back my KDE, hopefully without re-installling Leap 42.2

Any help would be appreciated.

LEAP 42.3 Changing File Associations in Gnome

$

Hi All,

I have recently changed to Leap 42.3 from Leap 42.1. I am having problems with file associations. For example, I like 'kate' as text editor and have installed it but the gnome's default text editor 'gedit' is also installed. In Leap 42.1, I could change default associations easily by right clicking the document and then clicking 'Open with other applications' and selecting the application of my choice.

In Leap 42.3, even though the above facility is still available, the 'Open with other applications' List shows neither 'gedit' nor 'kate'; when I wish to select either of them for opening a '.txt' document. Clicking a text document, opens it in LibreOffice Writer. I want to open all text documents in kate.

Guidance in this shall be highly appreciated.

Regards,

RSP2

TUMBLEWEED Any useful/needed zypper commands for the Tumbleweed user besides zypper dup ?

Thanks to the responses here to a past thread*, I understand that I update Tumbleweed only with zypper dup, and have no use for zypper up, zypper patch, or even zypper dup --no-allow-vendor-change .

After looking at the zypper cheat sheet, though, I have a related question:

Is there anything else that a relatively inexperienced openSUSE Tumbleweed user like me would regularly want to do with zypper? My impression is that zypper dup is about it, and that I'll be better off doing everything else through Yast.

If you think that's not so, please let me know!

TUMBLEWEED Issues (real or imagined) with Clonezilla and BTRFS

I noted serious, repeat Cinnamon desktop hangs in a past thread*, and almost threw in the towel on Tumbleweed-with-Cinnamon. I then decided to install the distro with ext4 (and Cinnamon), and haven't had significant problems since.

I wonder if the use of the BTRFS file system with the Clonezilla disk imaging program might have been the problem, as I experienced the hangs only after restoring a disk image with Clonezilla.

Other users have reported Clonezilla issues with BTRFS**, but I had believed that the problem had been fixed in a later Clonezilla version. Now, I wonder: I had serious problems before, did nothing besides change file systems, haven't had problems with restored images since.

I'd like to hear feedback from other Clonezilla users.
