$

I have an issue with Tumbleweed for the last 2 months with all the desktops KDE, Mate, XFCE, etc...

When it boots into desktop my speakers return a blank sound like (brrrrrr) continuously, when something plays this (brrrrrr) disappears I don't have this issue on Leap any idea what might cause this?

I'm 100% sure is not the hardware.

TUMBLEWEED MAC address issue: differences with internal and USB wifi adapters, TW and Mint

$

openSUSE tumbleweed KDE 32-bit is installed on my ThinkPad X41, dual-booting with Mint KDE 18.2 32-bit. TW using the internal wifi adapter will not connect to my home network but will connect to the building network. TW using a Belkin USB adapter connects to both networks. Mint using both adapters connects to both networks.

The problem seems to be TW with the internal adapter generates random MAC address for the device. My home network uses MAC address filtering, so the random addresses are denied access. The building network does not filter, so it connects. Somehow, TW uses the actual hardware MAC for the Belkin, so it connects to the home router. Mint always uses the actual hardware MAC for both devices, so they connect.

The MAC for the internal adapter, wlp4s2, is different each time, and never the actual MAC address. The Belkin shows mac: N/A.

How can I get the system to use the actual hardware MAC address for the internal adapter (like Mint), instead of generating alternative ones?

Thanks,
Howard

LEAP 42.3 Unable to do any updates on Leap 42.3

More or less fresh install of openSUSE 42.3 but unused for about 3 to 4 months.
When I boot up, package kit would start running automatically and stay for hours on "Checking updates".

Killed package kit using:
Code:

sudo killall packagekitd
Then tried using Yast online update. It gets stuck on "Loading Package Manager".

Tried
Code:

zypper update
Absolutely no output.

Checked repository URL's and enabled/autorefresh only the basic four repositories. Retried Yast and zypper. Same results.

Changed network management from "wicked" to NetworkManager as suggested in another thread. No effect.

Now if I try to enter Yast - Software repositories (this is after logging out and logging in again after Yast gets stuck), I get:
"System management is locked by the application with pid 20039 (/usr/bin/ruby). Close this application before trying again.
The only ruby I've heard of (other than the gemstone and the one who took her lips to town) is a programming language and I've never ever used it.

Before, installing openSUSE 42.3, I had briefly installed 42.2 (or perhaps 42.1) I cant remember and had similar problems with updates - which was solved by adding an omitted file separator in the URL for the nvidia repo (unbelievable but true and I had not even entered the URL manually).

There are times perhaps when the repos are not available but this has now happened multiple times over several days.

I successfully (and continuously) used openSUSE 13.1 for over two years - only having to use my Windows 7 system once in the middle after a power failure messed up an update. But after 9/10 months of trying on and off, I have yet to open my account with Leap - there is always some problem or the other and the GUI is laggy and "just doesn't feel right".

I'd be grateful if anyone can help.

Since the update to Firefox 57 it randomly freezes the display, when I scroll down a long page or watch some video.

The display is stuck and displays what it was displaying before, but nothing happens, and I have to reboot the system to fix it. The console ttys still work. In a video the sound still works, and i can stop/continue that.

TUMBLEWEED Kernel 4.14.x missing module "pas2"

With the current Tumbleweed kernel 4.14.x (i586) I am missing the oss sound driver "pas2.ko".
Looking at the kernel source, the sources for "pas2" are still there.
The config file for the kernel has no entry for the corresponding "CONFIG_SOUND_PAS", which is mentioned in the Makefile,
neither as "#CONFIG_SOUND_PAS" nor as "CONFIG_SOUND_PAS=m", etc..

Is there a reason why this module isn't built anymore?

LEAP 42.3 radeon drive issue

I was facing this issue after upgrade from 42.2 to 42.3. After the latest update of the system, I'm facing a new issue in radeon drive. I'm getting the following error mesage:
Code:

[      3.045230] radeon 0000:00:01.0: radeon_vce: Can't load firmware "radeon/BONAIRE_vce.bin. : failed VCE (-2) init.  [    3.045232] radeon 0000:00:01.0: failed VCE (-2) init.

Please find output of
Code:

mkinitrd
at https://paste.opensuse.org/18833184

I did force installation of
Code:

sudo zypper in -f kernel-firmware
but with no success. Please find the output at https://paste.opensuse.org/87979543

How can I install missing firmware's? Will installing amdgpu kmp and a later version of xf86-video-amdgpu solve the issue? If so, please let me know the steps to install them.

Please find Xorg log in https://paste.opensuse.org/80911205

Read in other forums for this issue - Your simplest and solution will be to use menuconfig (never manually edit the kernel .conf) to set AMDGPU to module and rebuild your kernel. As it is the card cannot load the firmware so naturally it isn't working.Should I update menuconfig?

Many Thanks for your help.

LEAP 42.3 How to reconfigure network settings as WiFi is not working.

Hi I am Rupesh from India and I have Toshiba satellite c55 b894 laptop and I have installed opensuse leap 42.3 about three months ago when it was launched. I have not made any modifications to setting's upto now.

Up to yesterday I am able to browse internet without any problems but at present on the desktop status bar I am able to see messages such as "WiFi disabled by hardware switch", "WiFi hardware disabled" etc.,.

In GNOME I have tried to make WiFi on but failed I mean it is always in off mode.

As network is not working in yast network settings Network Setup Method I have changed to wicked and still there is no use I have changed back to network manager and even no use. At present network is managed by network-manager.

For your reference I am providing the output of the commands iwconfig, hwinfo below.

Another issue is I have entered network services (xinetd) and it is showing as disabled and when I select enable and then finish I am getting warning as " All services are marked as disabled ( locked). Internet super-server will be disabled ". I have checked whether xinetd is disabled in services and found disabled so I have enabled it several times even no use I mean it is always showing as disabled.

I am able to browse internet on Windows without any problems but not in opensuse.

Please suggest how to freshly re configure the network so that I can browse internet properly.

TUMBLEWEED Fixing Kmail

$

For many years I used fetchmail and postfix with their default settings. fetchmail would put incoming mail into /var/spool/mail/karl. Kmail would load data from local mbox file /var/spool/mail/karl and from a local Kmail mail folder at ~/.local/share/local-mail. That worked with Kmail being a standalone application. But Kmail switching to akonadi caused severe annoyances and I already l looked for a replacement of Kmail. Switching from mbox type /var/spool/mail/karl to mail-dir type /home/karl/.local/share/local-mail/ and deleting the mbox account solved the problem:

Code:

erlangen:~ # postconf home_mailbox=.local/share/local-mail/inbox/
erlangen:~ # systemctl restart postfix

TUMBLEWEED Ghost packages?

I don't know how, but I damaged my system.

Actually, when I start Yast2 package manager module, it complains it have two version of the same packages installed, like cmake, gcab, etc. It asks me, which version to remove, but after selecting one and continue, there's message telling me these packages are not installed. Some packages from the list are on 100% not installed, for example plasma-pk-manager (or something like that).

Additionally, I don't have package updater plasmoid, my task manages under plasma5 not working and there's problem with window managing.

Hi all

After the latest updates, it is no longer possible to send an e-mail via kmail. I suspect an SSL problem, because the sending without SSL on port 25 still works fine. Does anyone else know this problem?

LEAP 42.2 Removable USB Media Mount Problem

Background: I want to store important files from my desktop computer to a micro SD card that will be readable by my Galaxy Tablet for when I travel. I bought a 64gb MicroSD that is compatible with the Tablet and a USB card reader/writer that will connect to my computer.

Problem: After working for a short time, Dolphin now gives the following error message when I try to access the microSD on my desktop computer:

Quote:

An error occurred while accessing '59.5 GiB Removable Media', the system responded: The requested operation has failed: Error mounting system-managed device /dev/sdb1: Command-line `mount "/tmp"' exited with non-zero exit status 32: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb1,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
Question: What do I need to do to correct this error?

TUMBLEWEED No sound from sound card 0 in two card setup

For quite some time have not been able to use the mic on a Logitech web camera, apparently could not be found. I put this down to the beta version of skype.

The system has two (2) sound cards, 0 on motherboard and 1 on video card

Configuring the sound card in Yast it appears that whenever either sound card is configured as sound card 0 it does not work, no sound, no volume configuration menu. At the same time sound card 1 works, plays a sound but still no mic.

It would seem that this is a software issue as both cards play o.k. when configured as sound card 1 but the mic is not recognized. Video camera works o.k.

Not being able to find the mic was also a problem in 42.3 but did not track it down so far, attributed it to skype beta.

TUMBLEWEED PCIe Bus error during boot

Hello,

As I mentioned in my previous posts, I've seen many Intel-related errors and possible bugs for kernel 4.14. Sometimes the system hanged at boot time after I did a *zypper dup* then reboot. One of the errors is like this:
Code:

~ $ dmesg | grep Error
[    0.044709] ACPI Error: [\_SB_.PCI0.XHC_.RHUB.HS11] Namespace lookup failure, AE_NOT_FOUND (20170728/dswload-210)
[    0.048721] ACPI Error: 1 table load failures, 12 successful (20170728/tbxfload-246)
[    1.801996] RAS: Correctable Errors collector initialized.
[  328.053721] pcieport 0000:00:1d.0: PCIe Bus Error: severity=Corrected, type=Data Link Layer, id=00e8(Transmitter ID)
[  351.383378] pcieport 0000:00:1d.0: PCIe Bus Error: severity=Corrected, type=Data Link Layer, id=00e8(Transmitter ID)
[  382.382643] pcieport 0000:00:1d.0: PCIe Bus Error: severity=Corrected, type=Data Link Layer, id=00e8(Transmitter ID)
[  387.739581] pcieport 0000:00:1d.0: PCIe Bus Error: severity=Corrected, type=Data Link Layer, id=00e8(Transmitter ID)
[  387.739600] nvme 0000:04:00.0: PCIe Bus Error: severity=Corrected, type=Physical Layer, id=0400(Receiver ID)
[  387.739602] nvme 0000:04:00.0:    [ 0] Receiver Error        (First)
[  387.821726] pcieport 0000:00:1d.0: PCIe Bus Error: severity=Corrected, type=Data Link Layer, id=00e8(Transmitter ID)

I'm having a difficult time understanding what this *PCIe Bus Error* is. It never appeared before I upgraded to 4.14.2 on Nov 30 or so. What is this and how to fix it? I guess I can ignore the ACPI error above. Correct me if I'm wrong.

And, btw, when will kernel 4.15 be arriving in Tumbleweed? I won't do another *zypper dup* again until 4.15 is here.

Thank you very much.

When I first installed it it said "VLC is not supposed to be run as root. Sorry. If you need to use real-time priorities and/or privileged TCP ports you can use vlc-wrapper (make sure it is Set-UID root and cannot be run by non-trusted users first)."

Then I wrote
Code:

sed -i 's/geteuid/getppid/' /usr/bin/vlc
to terminal and it launched. But now I got these errors.

Code:

Codec not supported:
VLC could not decode the format "h264" (H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10))
 Codec not supported:
VLC could not decode the format "mp4a" (MPEG AAC Audio)

I don't know what to do how can I solve it?

LEAP 42.3 T61 problem connecting wifi to home router

This ThinkPad T61 dual-boots openSUSE Leap 42.3 and Windows 10. For wifi, it uses its internal intel 4965 adapter, or a Belkin USB adapter.
In Leap, the intel wifi connects to our building network correctly, but has problems conecting to our home router. It connects to home only right after a boot, but will not connect after the computer sleeps and wakes. Also in Leap, the USB adapter always connects to both networks correctly, even after system sleep.
In Windows, both adapters always connect to both networks correctly, even after system sleep.

It never gets to

Any ideas what needs to change to get the internal intel adapter to consistently connect to the home router?

LEAP 42.3 Dolphin equivalent of Konqueror's "preview in embedded viewer"?

$
0
0
After an upgrade to Leap 42.3 (from 42.2), the left sidebar navigation panel in Konqueror is gone.

A search on the forum led me to https://forums.opensuse.org/showthre...queror-sidebar which indicates that that functionality has been dropped. :( This means that Konqueror is no longer productive for me.

One thing I used quite often in Konqueror was it's context-sensitive "Preview in embedded viewer" option. Turning on Preview for an entire directory is, to me, both silly from a performance perspective and virtually useless since the previews on text files, for example, are too small and limited.

So, the question is, how can I get similar "Preview in embedded viewer" functionality in Dolphin? Is it possible?
