Using volume buttons on my external usb headphone

I have a microsoft LifeChat usb headset. It has a volume control button on the cable.

This headset is set as the preferred sound device.

If I press the volume buttons on the cable. The volume of the internal soundcard is controlled, not the headphones. Any way to fix this?
