LEAP 15.1 Problems configuring for home server

$

Hi! I'am experienced windows user, but absolutely newbie to linux. Heard, it is now easy to set up for work, and decided to set up "home server" machine for some tasks... and failed. Spend 3 days trying to setup linux for my tasks, its crazy hard (((

I need to run this tasks:
- bittorent server (qBittorrent or Transmission)
- nas (samba server)
- syncthing (syncthing-gtk)

I've tried first to use mx linux, and almost everything was fine, but x11vnc bug stopped me, and i decided to try opensuse instead (leap 15.1). Repos have all the software I need, but... Out-of-the-box function "remote desktop" via vnc is not working (i turned it on, but client from windows machine can't connect), and installed "syncthing-gtk" package installed, but NOT running WITHOUT any messages! I thought this is trouble because of default chosen KDE desktop, installed GNOME, relogged in it and got same result.

Why the hell this so hard to set up this things? Windows machine requires 2 hours for set up this apps (i have old machine with them), but spent 3 days and got nothing. Is it really impossible to setup on linux this tasks for newbie?

Plz, somebody, describe needed configuration to run this packages and connect with remote desktop.

TUMBLEWEED HP All-in-One Printer No Longer Scanning

Used to use HP ColorLaserjet 2840 to scan using Skanlite on Leap 15.2. It is a network device connected through the Lan and it worked, although there were odd niggles. It never worked for hplip installation but worked as a manual network install using the fixed ip of the printer.

Now I have updated to Tumbleweed and have problems. Hplip still fails with a crash. In spite of all the available hplip packages available the Tumbleweed package still will not work with this printer, a python fault if I remember correctly but I have an unsolved thread on this from before Tumbleweed.

However I can install the printer using a network installation as previously but now Skanlite does not work at all. I suspect a firewall problem and would appreciate some help please in diagnosing and solving please.

LEAP 15.1 Running a GUI command from a root script

Hi,
Running a backup root cron job, that runs a script, to backup stuff across the network.
What I would like to do is, when the script finishes (either successfully or not), to pop up a message in the "standard user" GUI (KDE plasma)
Using
Code:

notify-send "Successful data backup"
(or not...)
and if run as the standard user, works fine, but obviously, when run using root cron - no message...

Is it possible to get a message on the standard user desktop?
Thanks.

LEAP 15.1 Replaced motherboard, now can't mount drive or RAID unless formatted

Replaced a faulty MSI motherboard (with a Gigabyte GA-880GM-UD2 Ver. 1.3, to keep a floppy drive capability). Failed to find the combination of SATA connections (SATA ports numbered differently, 0-4 replacing 1-6 on the dead MSI board) that would boot properly from 15.1 on sdb. Started a fresh install of LEAP 15.1. At the partitioning stage, the process doesn't allow me to mount the RAID drives (sda and sdc) unless formatted first. Likewise, the installer won't accept the /home partition on sdb without partitioning. This is not the experience I've had previously where /home partitions were accepted without formatting. Since the whole point of saving this computer with a new MB was to preserve the data on RAID drives (simple duplicated content) I can't reformat. This RAID array was created under LEAP 15.0 on the previous M/B using the RAID setup in the partitioning step of the LEAP installer. Is the order of the drives on the SATA ports significant? Should RAID be on consecutive SATA ports? The BIOS screens say use SATA 4/5 for RAID, which I translate into SATA port 3/4 when numbering starts at 0 (and 3/4 are the highest numbered ports on the board). The Gigabyte manual describes configuration of RAID in BIOS. I fear that approach would lead to formatting and loss of data. Any insights? If RAID setup fails, any hints on mounting a single disk from the RAID pair to recover data?

TUMBLEWEED X mouse "device removed" problem

So for about two, maybe three weeks I have noticed that every so often my desktop seems to freeze for a moment (a second or two) and then go back to normal. The symptoms were that the mouse pointer stopped moving and wouldn't accept input (e.g. the scroll wheel). Finally after keeping a process list open for a while I noticed that each time this happened there was a small bump (say 4-7%) of CPU used by X each time the freeze happened. Total CPU time was low and it wasn't ever showing "disk sleep", so it didn't seem like a swapping problem. Eventually it occurred to me to check the X logs: I looked in /var/log/Xorg.0.log this morning and found that each time the "freeze" happens, entries similar to this are logged:

Code:

There are sometimes only 5-10 seconds between "freezes" whereas sometimes there are several minutes. I've noticed no issues with the keyboard and nothing odd with the display. These log messages don't really indicate much to me, does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to further troubleshoot this?

LEAP 15.1 Yast2 problem

when trying to open any module in Yast I get a message similar the following depending on which module :-
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Internal error. Please report a bug report with logs.
Run save_y2logs to get complete logs.

Details: Failed to load Module 'Packages' due to: Failed to load Module 'AddOnProduct' due to: Failed to load Module 'ProductLicense' due to: cannot load such file -- cheetah
Caller: /usr/lib64/ruby/2.5.0/rubygems/core_ext/kernel_require.rb:59:in `require'

The above example was for "Software Management" if I try 'Network Setting' then substitute 'Packages' with 'Lan' and so on.

I have tried Zypper dup but with no success, any suggestions would be welcome.

I installed steam gamer software from opensuse repos to run Universe Sandbox 2 process. I did a direct install and also an install from software manager.
The steam install won't start up and is giving error messages as below:

But both of those driver files exist on my hardrive, i.e.,
/usr/lib64/dri/nouveau_dri.so , and
/usr/lib64/dri/swrast_dri.so

I am not a knowledgeable graphics person but I have leap 15.0, an nvidia card GeForce GTX 1050 ti (GP107 driver, and using nouveau graphics drivers according to Yast Hardware Info.

If the solution is to just add these paths to the library environment, I apologize but I can't see how to add to LD_LIBRARY in leap 15. It doesn't appear to be in my environment.
If there is another cause, I'd appreciate some guidance.

Please advise

Thanks, Tom Kosvic

LEAP 15.1 libpq.so not found in pg_config --libdir path

$

As the title says, the library
Code:

libpq.so
is not in the path given by
Code:

pg_config --libdir
. I install
Code:

postgresql posqtgresql-devel
which provides the package libpq5 which in turn installs the libpq.so.

Code:

$ pg_config --libdir
    /usr/lib/postgresql10/lib64
    $ find /usr/ -name libpq.so
    /usr/lib64/libpq.so

Our applications rely on the path given by
Code:

pg_config --libdir
to look for libpq.so but it fails. Is this some problem with OpenSUSE package management or is it that we shouldn't be using pg_config for this purpose?

TUMBLEWEED Piper not working

$

Hi all,
I recently bought a new gaming mouse: a Logitech G203.
Though Logitech only ships software for Windows and Mac, I found out that the mouse can be configured under Linux using the "Piper" software, available in the official openSUSE Tumbleweed repos:

Code:

~LANG=C zypper se -s piper libratbag
Loading repository data...
Reading installed packages...

S  | Name            | Type    | Version  | Arch  | Repository
---+-----------------+---------+----------+--------+------------------------
  | libratbag-devel | package | 0.10-1.1 | x86_64 | openSUSE-Tumbleweed-Oss
  | libratbag-devel | package | 0.10-1.1 | i586  | openSUSE-Tumbleweed-Oss
i  | libratbag-tools | package | 0.10-1.1 | x86_64 | openSUSE-Tumbleweed-Oss
v  | libratbag-tools | package | 0.10-1.1 | i586  | openSUSE-Tumbleweed-Oss
i+ | piper          | package | 0.3-1.1  | noarch | openSUSE-Tumbleweed-Oss

Installing Piper brought in libratbag and a few other libraries.

Unfortunately, upon starting Piper I get this:

Any hints? Can this be fixed in the repos?

Thank you in advance
Cris

LEAP 15.1 gnome-keyring keeps poping up before login

Hi All,
I have recently installed Leap-15.1, on my Dell laptop, with Gnome Desktop. The system is working fine nut there are certain annoying popups coming up even before login. The first one is the 'keyring login' popup. It says: 'Enter password to unlock your login keyring. The login keyring did not get unlocked when you logged in'. But I had not logged in yet. However, after entering the password the rest works ok.
The other popup is the smplayer. It pops up without launching even before i log in.

Shall welcome help in the above issues.

LEAP 15.1 Wireless enabled, HP All-in-one printer Photosmart: C4700 series, installation on Leap-15.1

Hi All,

I have been working with openSUSE for many years through many of the earlier versions. Recently, since Leap-42.3 became outdated, I switched to the latest Leap-15.1. I have had no problems in setting up this printer on the earlier versions. But this time the wireless setup is failing consistently.
I feel that the Gnome 'Settings' application is interfering in the setup.

Any ideas would be most appreciated.

LEAP 15.0 G96 [GeForce 9500 GT] Xorg fails to start with "(EE) [drm] failed to open device"

I have probably at least ten hours into trying to figure this out just since beginning using an SSD with openSUSE 15.0 already installed. It's a Sony VAIO 11 years old belonging to a church deacon that seemed to have graphics card failing in Win7, which I brought home Saturday afternoon and started working on that night. Eventually I figured out that the corruption was due to overheating, cooled it down, and put a big fan aimed at its bottom to keep the heat down, but in the process of discovery I managed to make Windows unable to boot. I spent the better part of Sunday trying to figure out how to get Windows repaired, without success as yet.

The BIOS is wacky, producing corruption any time BIOS video mode 80x25 is used. I was unable to find any downloadable BIOS on Sony's support site. The graphics modes it should be supporting go up to at least 1440x900 if this mobilespecs.net VGN-AR730E page is to be believed. Sony's support seems to have specifications well hidden if anywhere. Since it's a 17", 1920x1080 or 1920x1200 would make much more sense.

Video is perfect in VESA or FBDEV 1024x768, one of which is used either starting 15.1 installation or booting with nomodeset. Booting Knoppix or TW 20180812 & kernel-default 4.17.13 (dup currently in progress) the results are the same, corruption if mode is 80x25 text, 1024x768 at best otherwise. Inclusion of any video= on cmdline, absent nomodeset to accompany it, always causes black screen when KMS kicks in.

http://fm.no-ip.com/Tmp/Linux/Xorg/Nv/ has lspci, inxi, lsmod, xrandr, gfx hwinfo, several Xorg.0.logs, and journals from boots with various cmdline options I tried that didn't help, such as iommu= and iomem=, as indicated in each of the filenames.

Can anyone suggest other cmdline options that are worth a try, or might even fix this? Anything else?

LEAP 15.1 Leap 15.1 KDE applications crash when clicking "Print"

Hello everyone,

I'm getting weird printing-related issues after upgrading from 42.3 to 15.1. At first, I couldn't use the network printer that was installed in the system, the problem was this:

  1. I could print the test page from YaST but couldn't print anything from any of the applications;
  2. All KDE applications (okular, gwenview, kwrite, kmail, konsole) would freeze when I selected Menu -> Print, sometimes for good, but mostly they would come back live after 3-5 minutes but then freeze again when I chose a printer or clicked "Print"
  3. Non-KDE applications (LibreOffice) would not freeze but printing would not work (with the "filter failed" error)

I installed a newer version of CUPS (2.3b instead of 2.2.7) from the Printing repository (together with the dependencies, of course). Now the printing seems to work fine in non-KDE apps (I tried FoxIt Reader and LibreOffice). This also seems to have fixed the KDE printing menu freeze. However, KDE apps crash invariably after I select a printer (even "Print to file") and click "Print".

I would be grateful for any help :-)

Hallo,

Vielen Dank!

LEAP 15.0 Webengine or Konqueror/Falkon issue?

$

I'm not sure which section to put this in, and I can't find any other reports of this. Up to yesterday, I was using Falkon as my primary browser with now issues. I had to restart after another issue with a another application (resolved). But after the reboot, Falkon and Konqueror no longer allow text entry without first clicking on the address bar or search bar.

For example: my home page is google.com. I can't just open the browser and start typing to search. I have to first click on the address bar or do something to take focus away from the browser to type in the search. But Falkon and Konqueror are the only applications (so far) that this happens to.

Any ideas as to what might be the problem? has anyone else seen this?

Thanks.

LEAP 15.1 grub2 menu does not show NTFS partition

I have a laptop with windoze and openSUSE. I recently installed LEAP 15.1, and windoze no longer shows up in the grub boot menu. Do I need to edit /etc/modprobe.d/60-blacklist_fs-ntfs.conf to remove the blacklisting? I don't at this time need to read files from the windoze partition, but I do need to boot into it once in a while.

When I boot I get a blank screen with a cursor that tracks mouse movements, but no login menu. Ctrl-Alt-F1 does nothing.

I've seen this before after an interrupted update, and a reinstall resolved it. Should I just reinstall, or is corrective action possible from advanced Options? Thanks.

LEAP 15.1 HD monitor to large fonts

Hi,

I thought I was doing myself a favor and spent money on a large high res monitor. But now the fonts are to large (real bad on chrome and firefox - just the tabs and address bars). I have used everything I could find in the configure desktop. I set all the font sizes to 9 and still the font size is to big. I was able to reset the icon size but everything (my apps) that uses the system clues to set the font are to large. I need some guidance in what to do next. I'm there is something I can do???????
