LEAP 15.1 Correct names for installing packages with zypper

$

I'm trying to create a sript to install everything on a new openSUSE LEAP that I had on a previous release. The Yast menu for installing patterns doesn't list the actual pattern names, so I used zipper and have some questions about the output.

Pattern names for gnome don't align well with the dscriptins in the Yast menu; which of these do I need? gnome_basic, gnome_x11, patterns-gnome-gnome_basic, patterns-gnome-gnome_x11

In general, between foo and patterns-foo?

TUMBLEWEED LDB updated to 1.5.5, Samba still at 1.5.4 -- breaks.

It looks like around Sep. 9, my nightly update on my domain controller brought in a new libldb at version 1.5.5. Unfortunately, Samba wasn't also updated, and it depends on 1.5.4. This causes:
db: module version mismatch in ../../source4/dsdb/samdb/ldb_modules/acl.c : ldb_version=1.5.5 module_version=1.5.4
in my samba.log.
Looks like Samba needs to be updated. Hopefully that's in the works.
Thanks.

LEAP 15.0 Notebook WLAN interface not recognized any more

$

Hello Forum,

on an ASUS K73E laptop (core i3, 4GiB, SDD), about 7 years old, running OpenSUSE 15.0, the WLAN interface suddenly became unavailable.
  • "hwinfo --wlan" showed nothing
  • "hwinfo --network" showed (of course) only "Ethernet" and "lo" interface ...
  • ... so did "ip link list"
  • "lspci" did only show Ethernet controller, no WLAN
  • manually loading the required driver "ath9k" did not change anything, also no outputs on syslog while loading
  • booting Leap 15.1 "Network Installation" as test did not detect the WLAN

So, I guess this is a HW defect :\? Or is there something else I have overseen or I can check ?

Regards, Wumpus

LEAP 15.1 Attempts to install proper codecs fail

Hardware: Acer Aspire Z3-710 all-in-one
OS: Leap 15.1 fresh install
No sound from players (Amarok, VLC, Dragon Player) or FireFox; very loud beep is audible on boot-up.

Although I have successfully implemented multimedia support on several occasions in the past, I have not been able to do so in this case.

Over the past few days, I used the Multimedia Guide for openSUSE Leap 15.1, the Restricted formats - openSUSE Community Wiki one-click option, the opensuse-guide.org/codecs.php one-click option, and CubicleNate's Techpad, but none have resolved the issue. After each of these attempts, I performed a Snapper rollback, so that the machine is back to a relatively clean state.I recognize that I may have overlooked something in the process.

The output from alsa-info is at https://susepaste.org/2703763
The current list of repositories is https://susepaste.org/18716194

TUMBLEWEED Kdenlive freezes after importing a sound file

I am using Kdenlive 19.08.0 on Tumbleweed. Importing and working with video files works as expected (i am able to cut them, play them back (even with sound), scrub through the timeline). But when I try to import any standalone sound file, that is not a part of a video file, Kdenlive freezes and writes the following into the error output:

Code:

/////////// starting to add bin clips

Kdenlive then stops responding, I am even not able to close it using the "X" button and I have to kill the process to close it. Here is the full log: https://pastebin.com/rr54tpDQ

I will be very thankful for any ideas how to fix this.

Debian unstable "nothing provides multi-arch"

For perhaps up to the past two weeks since today, September 11, 2019, my Debian_Unstable repositories have been unable to build any packages for architectures i586 and x86_64. They are marked as "unresolvable," with the reason code "nothing provides multi-arch."

I have done a small amount of looking around, and found a few other people's repositories are also experiencing this for the Debian Unstable repos. I can share links if needed.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Do I need to adjust my configuration somehow? I only target Debian unstable so I have no personal experience with other Debian environments.

Hallo,

Eure Erfahrungen?

LEAP 15.1 NFS shutdown stop job delay on wireless, fast shutdown on wired connection

$

New install on laptop, KDE. Seven NFS entries in fstab:

Code:

192.168.1.1:/home/shares/Gravados/Publico  /home/laptop/Shares/Publico  nfs      noauto,users                    0  0
192.168.1.1:/home/shares/Gravados/Desenhos  /home/laptop/Shares/Desenhos  nfs      noauto,users                    0  0
192.168.1.1:/home/shares/Gravados/Series    /home/laptop/Shares/Series    nfs      noauto,users                    0  0
192.168.1.1:/home/shares/Gravados/Filmes    /home/laptop/Shares/Filmes    nfs      noauto,users                    0  0
192.168.1.1:/home/shares/Gravados/Filmes_2  /home/laptop/Shares/Filmes_2  nfs      noauto,users                    0  0
192.168.1.1:/home/shares/Gravados/Shows    /home/laptop/Shares/Shows    nfs      noauto,users                    0  0
192.168.1.1:/home/shares/Gravados/Series_2  /home/laptop/Shares/Series_2  nfs      noauto,users                    0  0

On wired connection shutdown is normal. With wireless connection there's a 1m30s stop job delay for the /home/laptop/Shares/Series NFS share, although probably it's also waiting for the other shares timeout.

So apparently wireless is shut down before shares, but not ethernet.

FWIW, there are other four wired boxes accessing these shares that shut down normally.

In one of them I have used the following nfs options, the others are the same as the laptop:

Code:

soft,noauto,rw,users,timeo=100,retrans=2  0  0
This should reduce the delay if the server is down, but as it runs practically 24 x 7 it's been a long time and I don't recall the circumstances. I've also read that using the timeout/retrans options with soft may lead to corruption, but only Publico is rw (and only occasionally used ), all others are ro.

Any idea on how to fix this shutdown delay?

Thanks

TUMBLEWEED Really really strange openSuse booting problem

hi guys,
so i have this really strange issue when trying to boot. Short story is that it doesn't boot at all if i don't have a working ethernet cable plugged in - it just loads forerver. And as soon as I plug it it magically boots without any problems.
I actually reinstalled the distro and only after hours of baffling i figured that when the cable is plugged it works.
So does anyone have a similar problem and does anyone have any suggestions on how to boot offline.
thanks in advance and have a nice day :)
PS - i use OpenSuSe Tumbleweed

TUMBLEWEED Paste (CTRL-V, nor Right Mouse Btn Select of Paste/Copy) not working

I noticed that for the last several weeks, after an update in tumbleweed, I cannot copy/paste within KDE.

I disabled klipper (by exiting the app). I also confirmed that Klipper wasn't even receiving the "Copied" text.

I tried copy/pasting from various apps. Even to the same app. (e.g.: Konsole to Konsole).

I have confirmed that this works just fine in Leap 15.0.

I have multiple keyboard layouts, but my use of the mouse's context menu to copy/paste obviates that path.

It's running in a VM and I confirmed the state of the shared clipboard etc, are the same in both VMs (Leap and Tumbleweed).

Please help, this is so annoying and really stopping me from doing my work.

TUMBLEWEED Theming Issue

$

Pretty new to Linux and first time using OpenSuse and KDE.
I wanted to be able to theme Yast as I had my other applications/folders etc. I was advised that I could use this kdesu systemsettings5 to open system settings as root, this worked, I could now theme yast.
However, I now have two separate themes going on - if I open system settings normally, I can only theme certain aspects, it won't affect any root stuff like Yast, nor weirdly, will it effect application menus. If I open settings in root, again, the theming only takes place on certain things. I can no longer download themes when open system settings normally, without the terminal command - I just get a 'File not Found' error.

Solution? Or easy way to undo this?

TUMBLEWEED Yast 'HTTP Server' startup: "Internal error - yast.rb: Component cannot import namespace 'HTTPDData'

when I run 'HTTP Server' in Yast, it reports: "Internal error. ... Caller: /usr/lib64&ruby/vendor_ruby/2.6.0/yast/yast.rb:186in 'import_pure' Details: component cannot import namespace 'HTTPDData'. y2log . Other Yast modules seem to work. I've dup'ed recently. No related repos added. Ideas what might be wrong? I've Xampp installed in /opt, could that affect this? (Xampp is working, but going to configure Apache so I wouldn't need that).

Deps seem fine:
Code:

$ sudo zypper verify
Dependencies of all installed packages are satisfied.

I've installed the lamp_server pattern as zypper shows:

Code:

i+ | lamp_server  | Web and LAMP Server              | pattern

LEAP 15.0 System can only be suspended once?

$

If I suspend my laptop, and then later wake it up, it restores back to to the previous running state just fine, but only once. If I suspend it again, it will freeze with a black screen on wakeup. I have to do a hard reset and perform a normal boot to make it work again.

I tested this on two laptops, both running openSUSE Leap 15.0. One is a Lenovo Z-70 with Intel Core i7 processor and 16GB RAM, the other is a MSI CR630 with AMD Athlon processor and 8GB RAM. Both laptops exhibit the same issue when attempting to sleep/wakeup the second time.

Is this a known issue?

LEAP 15.0 Questions regarding replacing a wifi card on a laptop

$

I have a laptop computer running openSUSE Leap 15.0 and network manager. The internal wifi card failed, so I replaced it with a new one (of the same brand and model). When I rebooted, the wifi did not work. I found the following problem(s):

1. The old interface was wlan0, but the new card appears as wlan1. Somehow the system seems to remember the old card so it added the new card as a different interface, and network manager was configured to work on the old interface.
2. The /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/<wifi-name> file has a mac address listed in it, which pertained to the old card. The new card obviously has a different mac address.

I was able to use the nmcli command to create a new connection and made it work with the new wifi card. But my question is, how and where does the system remember the old wlan0 interface? Can I delete it and move the new card to wlan0?

LEAP 15.1 Brother printers

$

Just thought I would throw in a "bouquet" for Brother printers + Linux. (BTW, not associated with them at all...!) Note: All my connections are wireless - oldish brick house - hard to cable.
Have been chasing a replacement printer for a while, after my previous Epson Artisan 725 died... (not because it "broke" as such, but because Epson put a limit on how many pages a printer can print, before the "excess ink print pads" (or similar) need changing, and obviously it costs more than the replacement value to get them changed....) The Epson had worked for quite a few years, but wouldn't call it trouble-free. Upgrades of OS invariably caused issues, with both print and scan, but it would generally then work reliably.
Needed something in a hurry after the Epson died, and had heard that HP (almost) guarantee their printers will work in Linux, so bought a short-term cheapo HP. Did it work? Yes. Was it reliable/trouble free? NO, maybe a 4.5/10... Often when I went to use, I basically had to reconfig it... If I turned the printer on AFTER printing from a PC - trouble! Had to turn everything off/on, standing on my left foot, with my tongue out... :-) Would it then work? Mostly Yes.
Nearly bought another Epson, but thought I would email Brother Pre-sales about their Linux support, and received a response of "All our Multi-Function Centre have Linux support", So then emailed their Tech support, and they agreed on support available, then I checked their support/download pages, and found actual recent Linux drivers, both RPM and DEB, so decided to give them a try.
After purchase (MFC-J890DW - a basic inkjet MFC), connected and it basically plug'n'play'd for printing, downloaded the scanner driver - simple install - and scanning was up and running, as well. Also did an install on a Linux Mint machine, and install was basically the same - plug and play for printing, simple install for scanning... (no, don't use the fax, but imagine it should be fine.)

Therefore can only recommend these as a basic Linux printer, and will definitely make me feel a bit more positive re: printers in the future.

Thanks, John.
