LEAP 15.1 unable to run installer on Dell 2 in 1 XPS 13 7391

This PC is a gorgeous piece of hardware, so I decided to disregard my own long held practice of not trying to install Linux on state of the art/bleeding edge hardware. I expected problems, but I never imagined it could be this bizarre.

I first disabled Bitlocker in Windows 10, disabled secure boot, shrunk the Windows partition to create free space (intending to dual boot) and tried to install from a USB drive prepped with 15.1 net install. I was able to boot to the thumb drive without difficulty, and the usual green bars worked their way across the screen, etc., but the installer halted when unable to detect a network connection. The on board wifi is a relatively new Intel 9560, so I put in an older USB wifi dongle and tried again.. same result.

I then tried again with a 15.1 DVD image, hoping to get a system to boot, so I could install a newer kernel to get wifi. That's where it got ugly. The installer not only can't even detect wifi it cannot see the hard drive, in fact the partitioner not only can't find any partitions it cannot even find a drive, not even the thumb drive. (Win10 is still fully functional when I reboot). I expected that Optane would make my efforts more complicated, but this seems a little extreme.

Before I go any further (i.e. waste more time) I would like to know if anyone can offer constructive feedback, thanks in advance.

TUMBLEWEED AMD Ryzen 5 3400G processor

Hello,

As the sales start on Wednesday in France, I am looking to change my laptop. I want to replace it with a desktop computer powerful enough for editing and streaming on Twitch (without playing greedy 3D games).

For video editing I use Kdenlive. This software has two hardware acceleration systems:

The software does not tell us about the AMD / ATI processors ... but only the Nvidia ...

For my part, I came across this model which I really like: https://www.materiel.net/produit/201910160025.html

Suddenly I wonder what it will give with an AMD Ryzen 5 3400G processor (4-Core 3.7 GHz / 4.2 GHz Turbo - Cache 6 MB - TDP 65W) which also supports the graphics part ... That's good tolerated by linux this stuff?

Do you have advice on buying a computer for Linux?

TUMBLEWEED Shutting down fans based on temperature?

$

I'm on a Dell XPS 9570 running TW. When running on the Intel iGPU, the temps are low across the board as reported by lm-sensors, yet the fan still continues to hum away quietly, never spinning down. Even while idle; even when the computer sleeps, I can hear the gentle whirring of the fan up close; it will not stop until the computer suspends.

Is there a way that someone can share with me, how to set up my fans to only activate above a certain temperature? I am concerned that the constant running will degrade their lifespan.

I can tell the fans are not being controlled/overridden by the BIOS as they turn off normally under W10 when there is no/little load on the system.

I looked at i8kutils but it appears to depend on aumix, which I cannot find for TW.

As others have pointed out elsewhere Virtualbox 6.1 has been out a while yet TW is still on 6.0.14. Is there a technical reason for this?

TUMBLEWEED What should be the correct way to patch/update Tumbleweed?

I have been using Leap and just build a Tumbleweed VM. Typically I use "zypper ref; zypper up" to patch/update within Leap. I could use the same for Tumbleweed but more frequently I got warning like below. So should I use "zypper ref; zypper dup" to patch/update in Tumbleweed or there are other ways?

LEAP 15.1 History With Time/Date?

$
0

Happy New Year to All! Wondering if there is a way to display time/date of last use of a command in my history file? ( i.e. .bash_history ). history --help gives:

..."If the HISTTIMEFORMAT variable is set and not null, its value is used
as a format string for strftime(3) to print the time stamp associated
with each displayed history entry. No time stamps are printed otherwise."

Not sure (tried to pipe history | grep date, etc.; no luck!) if the second line referencing "...format string...to print the time stamp..." is telling me what I want is available or no?
Regular use of history command of course gives 1. (number of command) <tab> <Command>. I'm looking to add time/date <Command> was last used. Any ideas?

Thanks, as always. Again: A Healthy, Safe & Prosperous New Year to all!!

TUMBLEWEED slow internet (or maybe mysterious traffic shaping) on tumbleweed

Hi, I have problem with one of my tumbleweed machines, internet works only about 8/6mbit instead of 100/100. When I reboot into windows (cough cough), everything works as it should on the same IPv4. I tried to set IPv4 manually and via dhcp, disabled firewall, but it has no effect. I have played with wondershaper in the past, but I don't have it installed at the moment, I tried to reset tc rules with
Code:

sudo tc qdisc del dev enp31s0 root
Error: Cannot delete qdisc with handle of zero.

but it is probably not set. What can I check and reset to defaults, if there's some "forgotten" shaping? Maybe wrong MTU?
I have this very common card:

See, I manage a higher bandwidth using Windows 10 (in Dual Boot Config | Legacy Setup in Bios), atleast 20Mbps connection (out of 35Mbps in 2.4GHz band) for the same wireless network adapter on the same PC. Distance from AP to PC is about 12 Meters w/ few partitions on the same floor.

Is this a problem within the driver? Link Quality & Signal Level are way too low [Link Quality=48/70 Signal level=-62 dBm]. I'm using a version 3 for Windows driver and here in Tumbleweed uses Version 1 [29:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8188EE Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01)]. My ZTE Router | AP has no problems with reliable ISP to date, btw.

I hope someone could lead me to a right troubleshooting tips. TIA

TUMBLEWEED Volume level changing by itself

Hello everyone.
I am using an OpenSUSE Tumbleweed with Gnome DE on a laptop probably no one of you know (a “JDM” machine I’ve bough during my vacation, a Mouse convertible without proper name, partnumber BC-MB1485UD11A-191), and it is surprisingly good experience except for some minor problems I’ve already worked around.
BUT one issue persists, and it is quite annoying: volume level changes itself up and down all the time. It’s not flataudio or whatever that’s called properly, it’s like reacting to me pressing a volume up/down hotkey, except that I am not. Showkey and similar software shows a corresponding hotkey being pressed and lifted by itself, when I just leave my laptop lying to see what happens.
I’ve came across Arch forum thread where they had a somewhat similar problem and traced it down to peaq_wmi and input_polldev modules, but that bug was allegedly fixed in 4.14.smth kernel, and I am on 5.3.12-2. Blacklisting that 2 modules didn’t change anything for me.
So, where should I look next?

be OK. What information should I provide to help you helping me? This message is being
generated on the PC to be upgraded, with English a the default language and German and
Norwegian as optional languages. The upgrade is being done with English as language both
for language and keyboard.

Suggestions are appreciated!
Jan Christian

Hello,

i have a little and the same Problem on "two" PC-Clients.
The Computers have 16 GB Memory, a brandnew installed OpenSuse 15.1 incl. Updates.

If the Computer boots without the "XEN Hypervisor" they are no Problems and the correct Memorysize displayed.
Boot the System with "XEN Hypervisor" only 2.2 GB Memory are displayed.
I remove 8 GB Memory and the Computer start with 8 GB Memory they only 1.7 GB are displayed!?

I tried a lot, kernel parameters, new installation and installed a Second System. Same Failure!
I'm also feeding Google wrong and I'm running out of ideas.

Some Systeminformations.:

Hi
When I started my computer today, I got a message pop-up that said:
Code:

Fatal Error:Signature verification failed for file 'repomd.xml' from repository 'nVidia Graphics Drivers'.
When I run zypper it showed this:
Code:

Retrieving repository 'nVidia Graphics Drivers' metadata ------------------------[\]
Signature verification failed for file 'repomd.xml' from repository 'nVidia Graphics Drivers'.

Note: Signing data enables the recipient to verify that no modifications
occurred after the data were signed. Accepting data with no, wrong or unknown
signature can lead to a corrupted system and in extreme cases even to a system
    compromise.

Note: File 'repomd.xml' is the repositories master index file. It ensures the
    integrity of the whole repo.

Warning: This file was modified after it has been signed. This may have been a
malicious change, so it might not be trustworthy anymore! You should not
continue unless you know it's safe.

Signature verification failed for file 'repomd.xml' from repository 'nVidia Graphics Drivers'. Continue? [yes/no] (no):
