LEAP 15.1 Help Troubleshooting Blender launch failure

$

It has been ages since I've run a Linux system, but up till now the auto-magical miracle that is YaST has done pretty much everything for me without trouble, allowing me to get stuff done while still wallowing in blissful ignorance.

It was fun while it lasted, but now despite YaST telling me that Blender, Blender Languages, and Blender Cycles Headers packages are installed from the official 15.1 LEAP repositories, I can't get Blender to run. GIMP, Inkscape, Firefox, and LibreOffice are all running fine for me, so it appears to be Blender specific and not a general problem with applications.

I tried in the start menu, Applications/Graphics/Blender where Blender shows up under both Blender Template and 3D Modeller icons. Click the icon for either one and for a fraction of a second something appears in the task bar before closing again.

I figured I'd wander through foggy memories of how Linux file structures usually work, and was hoping to find an executable in Root/usr/bin and found blender and blenderplayer which showed as shared libraries, and blender-sample and blender-softwaregl which show as executable, and blender-thumbnailer.py. Results are no different than from start menu.

Hardware wise:
Ryzen 7 3700x
32 GB 3200 MHz RAM
Nvidia RTX 2070 Super Driver Version 440.31 according to Nvidia X Server (Nvidia proprietary drivers from community repositories)
Samsung boot and storage SSDs, which I believe I formatted in BTRFS.

Note that although as far as I know I have the correct Nvidia drivers installed I'm not sure I've actually used any programs that use 3D acceleration yet. While I was looking in the Nvidia X server panel I did set it to prefer performance so It could run faster than 300 MHz, but trying Blender after that change didn't produce any positive results.

Blender is installed on the Linux boot drive, so I don't think there should be any problems with looking for bits of it in the wrong directories?

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling with YaST, I also tried the openSUSE downloads pages and tried "Direct install" for LEAP 15.1. I also checked Info Center and it seems to think that indeed I am running LEAP 15.1

My chief problem is that after having done a few searches for variations of "Blender not launching" I didn't come up with any likely suspects, and my Linux skills are so rusty that I'm not sure where to go from here in terms of troubleshooting.

TUMBLEWEED Can't get audio to sync in PS2 emulators

I've posted about this problem in a couple places, including the PCSX2 forums, and I haven't gotten a lot of help. I'll copy/paste what I wrote.

Quote:

I'm on openSUSE Tumbleweed Linux, using the 1.5.0~git20191208 version of PCSX2.

Several months ago I noticed when I tried playing games in PCSX2, the audio is lagging. This is with the default SPU2-X settings (PortAudio, ALSA, TimeStretch, 300ms Latency). I notice the lag most when I'm on the menus. I move the cursor and about a second later the sound effect plays. The audio remains lagged into gameplay, too. I tested this with Suikoden IV, Suikoden III, Final Fantasy XII, and Wild Arms 3.

If I turn the latency down to 15ms, the lag is more or less gone, but the audio suffers from skipping and distortion. I can set it to 50ms to get rid of the skipping and distortion, but even then there's a slight, noticeable delay.

I've tried switching to SDL and PulseAudio, but that doesn't seem to make any difference. I also tried running the Windows version of PCSX2 in Wine to see if that's any better, but alas, it suffers the same issues.

My PC specs:

OS: openSUSE Tumbleweed Linux
CPU: Intel Core i5-7500 3.4Ghz
RAM: 8GB
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4GB (official NVIDIA drivers, up to date)
Quote:

It is entirely possible it's some configuration issue outside of PCSX2. I tried testing the games using the newer Play! emulator, both the stand-alone version and the libretro core. The stand-alone had the same audio lag as PCSX2. The libretro core, on the other hand, seemed to have the audio synced, but the framerate was worse (around 50fps), which resulted in both audio and video quality problems.

Thing is, though, I don't experience audio issues with any other game or application. Not native Linux game or games running in Proton, or even other emulators such as Dolphin or any other libretro cores (including Beetle PSX HW and PPSSPP). It seems to be exclusive to PS2 emulators, which makes zero sense to me.
It might be worth noting that I'm using the AppImage version of Play!, as that's the only format the Automated Linux Builds are provided. I tried searching for it on OBS, but I had no luck.

Quote:

... I booted over to Windows 10. I installed PCSX2 version 1.4.0 (the last stable version). The only settings I changed from the default were the controller mappings and setting the GPU plugin to use DirectX 11 (hardware) to render the video. The SPU2 plugin defaults to Xaudio2 with an audio latency of 100ms.

I tested Wild Arms 3, Suikoden Tactics, and Final Fantasy XII. All achieved perfect audio sync. Or at least good enough sync that I couldn't notice any delay. Same exact computer as I tested on Linux with the 1.5.0 Git builds of PCSX2.
So, to summarize, PCSX2 and the AppImage version of Play! both suffer from rather bad audio lag on my Linux install. PCSX2 runs perfectly in Win10 on the same machine. No other Linux program appears to have any such issues with audio in any way. Could it possibly be a config issue somewhere? Could it be an issue with the PCSX2 plugin, and the Play! issues related to AppImage, thus being separate problems with the same symptoms?

LEAP 15.1 Wi-Fi 6 AX200 Network Card

Hi,
In my eternal (infernal) continuing search for a WiFi solutions that actually works with linux (having had various cards/USB devices that "sort of" work "intermittently"), have come across the latest iteration that, in theory, has built in support in the kernel ( >V5.1), in the shape of https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AU-Intel...53.m1438.l2649. These are readily available, but all seem to be in the guise of an M.2 package.
Has anyone come across/used these (and they worked?) but would obviously need some sort of adaptor, similar to: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/M-2-Wifi...frcectupt=true
Does anyone know if this will actually work, or am I just dreaming??
Any (nice) suggestions, appreciated.
Thanks.

TUMBLEWEED eid software Belgium - only supported on Leap 15.1

Hi all,

i was trying to install the eID software of the government on Tumbleweed, but it failed. It is software that is being used in Belgium to read electronic ID card and connect to several government portals.
You find the software here : https://eid.belgium.be/nl/linux-eid-...re-installatie

Apparently they support Leap 15.0 and 15.1, but not Tumbleweed. - which is a little bit disappointing.

Is there any alternative to get this software implemented of available for Tumbleweed please?

LEAP 15.1 Dolphin Can Not See My Live USB stick

Hello, let me say I didn't made wrong choosing this part of Forum. I wanted to try install OpenSUSE linux using live usb stick. I used "SUSE Studio image writer" application to make live USB-stick, I did what had to be done, but now, my Dolphin can not register my USB, so I can not see what is written on it (if any).

Did I made some mistake? Is it possibly to get back usb-stick for "regular using" (to store and write data from it)?

Thank you for answering my questions

TUMBLEWEED Verändertes Verhalten der Diashow für das Hintergrundbild bei Tumbleweed

$

Hi,

I've installed Leap 15.1 fresh on this new and shiny Notebook (Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-10210U CPU @ 1.60GHz) and never thought I wolud have problems with Intel(c) WLan hardware...

but the openSuse Leap 15.1 file is not the same as the file from wireless.wiki.kernel.org ...?
Replacing the file form Leap 15.1 with that from wireless.wiki.kernel.org did not change anything.
Maybe that is because the kernel drive wants to load iwlwifi-9000-pu-b0-jf-b0-38.ucode as seen above?

I'm really confused ...

Has anybody a working WLAN connection with his ThinkBook 14-IML ?
... and could you please explain to me how you did it...

TUMBLEWEED Hoe software verwijderen

$

TUMBLEWEED Unable to install D-Link wireless adapter DWA-171C

I am a "zero" with Linux and have just started to use the software and learn. After installing openSUSE Tumbleweed, I noticed that the D-Link wireless adapter DWA-171C is recognized by the OS as a standard USB disk instead of the wireless adapter that it actually is. The adapter does carry the driver installation files for Windows OS, but nothing for Linux. I could download the driver software for the adapter from D-Link's website, "ftp://ftp2.dlink.com/PRODUCTS/DWA-171/REVC/DWA-171_REVC_DRIVER_v5.8.1_LINUX.zip" and attempted installation in openSUSE Tumbleweed following the instructions provided along with the software. Everything goes well until the step asking to "compile module" which ends with errors being returned. The details are reproduced below -

A] Installation (and uninstall) steps as provided by D-Link:

Install make and gcc
1. update apt
>sudo apt update
2. install make
>sudo apt install make
3. install gcc
>sudo apt install gcc
Install and active module:
1. Unzip and change directory
>cd /home/mathew/Downloads/DWA-171_REVC_DRIVER_v5.8.1_LINUX/20190904_DWA-171C_RTL8811CU_Linux_driver_v5.8.1/
>tar zxvf rtl8821CU_WiFi_linux_v5.8.1_34171.20190628_COEX201 90509-4141.tar.gz
>cd rtl8821CU_WiFi_linux_v5.8.1_34171.20190628_COEX201 90509-4141
2. Compile module
>make
3. Install module
>sudo make install
4. Unplug adapter and re-plugin adapter to active module
Please note that DWA-171C support auto install driver function in Windwos OS, user should exit Flash disk mode(default) to active adapter mode.

Uninstall module:
1. Change directory
>cd rtl8821CU_WiFi_linux_v5.8.1_34171.20190628_COEX201 90509-4141
2. Uninstall module
>sudo make uninstall
3. Clean object code
>make clean

What I did and the results:

LEAP 15.1 Akonadi / Contact issues after distro-upgrade

$

Hi all !

After performing a distro-upgrade from Leap 15.0 to 15.1 and fixing some GFX-firmware related stuff, I still have some issues, this time with "Akonadi" and "Kontact":
  • "akonadi indexing agent" always crashes. There is nothing more to say - just that it worked with Leap 15.0 and also works with Tumbleweed on another machine. And trying to install the debug symbol packages as suggested by the KDE crash handler fails, But I guess this is another story...
  • In Kontact, on the KMail page, I cannot select the mail folders. There is always one folder selected, unfortunately not the "Incoming" folder, and I can browse mails within that folder, but I cannot select any other folder. As I just figured out, I can however change the folder via the menu "Go-to => Change folder" (in German "Gehe zu => In Ordner wechseln ..."). Nevertheless, this is clumsy...
The remaining of Kontact seems to work (Adressess, Calendar, ...).

I also had problems with a crashing "baloo indexing agent", however I was able to solve that by deleting the baloo index file.

Any ideas what can be done here ? Delete some configuration files ?

Regards, Sven

Just a heads up anyone having problems compiling modules just run the script below with root permissions, [edit] the version of VMware to match your version. Saved me many times on different hardware currently a Dell XPS 7590.

#!/bin/bash

VMWARE_VERSION=workstation-15.5.1

TMP_FOLDER=/tmp/patch-vmware

rm -fdr $TMP_FOLDER

mkdir -p $TMP_FOLDER

cd $TMP_FOLDER

git clone https://github.com/mkubecek/vmware-host-modules.git

cd $TMP_FOLDER/vmware-host-modules

git checkout $VMWARE_VERSION

git fetch

make

sudo make install

sudo rm /usr/lib/vmware/lib/libz.so.1/libz.so.1

sudo ln -s /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libz.so.1

/usr/lib/vmware/lib/libz.so.1/libz.so.1

sudo /etc/init.d/vmware restart

TUMBLEWEED Devede won't start

Installed Devede 3.22.0-4.2 from Packman repo using zypper.

On trying to start Devede from terminal I get the following message and Devede does not start.

Code:

labud@install:~> devede
DeVeDe 3.22.0
Locale: en_US.UTF-8
Using package-installed files
Failed to load modules DEVEDE_CONVERT. Exiting
labud@install:~>

Also tried to start Devede from Start menu, but also Devede does not start. While looking for what DEVEDE-CONVERT might be, I found some info saying I had to have cdrkit-cdrtools-compat file installed.

Using zypper:

Code:

labud@install:~> sudo zypper install cdrkit-cdrtools-compat
[sudo] password for root:
Loading repository data...
Reading installed packages...
'cdrkit-cdrtools-compat' not found in package names. Trying capabilities.
No provider of 'cdrkit-cdrtools-compat' found.
Resolving package dependencies...

Nothing to do.
labud@install:~>

I uninstalled Devede.

While trying to find alternate software I ran across DevedeNG which apparently replaces the old Devede.
Quote:

DeVeDeNG 4.11.0-1.10 is a rewrite from scratch of the old Devede, to work with Python3 and Gtk3, and with a new internal architecture that allows to expand it and easily add new features.
from http://www.rastersoft.com/programas/devede.html

So, using zypper:
Code:

labud@install:~> sudo zypper install devedeng
[sudo] password for root:
Loading repository data...
Reading installed packages...
Resolving package dependencies...

Problem: nothing provides cdrkit-cdrtools-compat needed by devedeng-4.11.0-1.10.noarch
Solution 1: do not install devedeng-4.11.0-1.10.noarch
Solution 2: break devedeng-4.11.0-1.10.noarch by ignoring some of its dependencies

labud@install:~> sudo zypper install cdrkit-cdrtools-compat

Is anyone else having this problem or does anyone know why Devede or Devedeng will not work?
They are both listed in the Packman repos, but cdrkit-cdrtools-compat is not listed. I found this cdrkit-cdrtools-compat here:
http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3?stat...srodzaj=3&dist
but was unsure which, if any, to choose.
My guess would be this one:
Quote:

openSUSE Tumbleweedftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/repositories/home:/vpereirabr:/AP/openSUSE_Tumbleweed/x86_64/cdrkit-cdrtools-compat-1.1.11-3.13.x86_64.rpm
but I am not sure. Can someone please confirm/deny this?

LEAP 15.1 Fail2Ban For Dynamic DNS Update with FirewallD

Folks,

Long time OpenSUSE user, currently moving to Leap 15.

1. GOAL: Move to Fail2Ban + FirewallD combo for secure VPS instance login from any location.

2. SITUATION: From home office (or anywhere with additional configuration) update a dynamic DNS service provider with new local IP address. Cloud instance firewall is updated by whitelisting the new IP associated with the fixed domain at the DNS service. This is the ONLY access to the VPS. Typically one, or sometimes a few colleagues, will be able to access. Access is via SSH with a key etc., typically initiated from Windows via PuTTY etc. Dynamic IP is communicated to the DNS service by local host firewall (IPCop or Pfsense etc.)

3. CURRENT SOLUTION SUCCESS: Using CFS Firewall ("ConfigServer and Security Firewall") on OpenSUSE 42 series, which has a very easy-to-understand dynamic DNS configuration, which updates the inbound whitelist. The update through the whole chain happens in seconds on any IP address change. Has never failed in three years. And system seems otherwise locked down.

4. NEW LEAP DEPLOYMENT: CFS cannot be easily deployed on new OpenSUSE Leap version (long story, CFS not updated for configuration details). Therefore, why no go with standard out-of-the-box?

5. SUCCESS OF NEW DEPLOYMENT: firewalld is deployed, with a hard-coded single IP address in the trusted zone, and the updated new port number. The login via SSH with key works perfectly. And the firewall is locking down everything else. So far, so good.

6. WHAT FAIL2BAN IS SUPPOSED TO DO: Fail2Ban makes it possible to whitelist a domain! This is really nice. Add in the DNS service domain host name, just as with CFS, and then Fail2Ban is supposed to dynamically update the associated IP address with firewalld -- and apparently the interface between the two comes with the install.

7. PROBLEM WITH NEW DEPLOYMENT: New IP addresses can be manually added to firewallD. But so far Fail2Ban does not dynamically do this.

8. DOCUMENTATION? I haven't seen any documentation on the interface between fail2ban and firewalld. Everyone just says "it works". More details would really help, especially for such an important set of products.

9. HOW IMPORTANT IS THIS USE CASE? The popularity of affordable VPS cloud instances is skyrocketing! And a huge number of home office users are of course on dynamic IP addresses. The ability to easily configure a cloud instance to ONLY accept connections from a small number of home office or mobile users would be HUGELY useful it seems.

10. PROOF: And we know it works really well -- case in point is the OpenSUSE 48 version with CFS.

11. SUMMARY PROBLEM: Fail2Ban is not getting the updated IP address and pumping it into firewalld. I have not been able to find information on how this is supposed to work or any logs to read or settings to do. Fail2Ban as far as I know is correctly configured.
FAIL2BAN CONFIG

jail.local

[DEFAULT]
ignorip=127.0.0.1 aaa.bbb.com /* "aaa" etc. is the FQDN model */

[sshd] /* f2b will monitor inbound ssh */
enabled=true
port = 2221
action = iptables-multiport /* Not sure even about this line */

12. POSSIBLE PROBLEMS, perhaps either of following?

1. Link between Fail2Ban and DNS service.
2. Link between Fail2Ban and FirewallD.

Thanks for any suggestions!

John

LEAP 15.0 Soundblaster X7 5.1 sound distortion

Hi Everyone!

I have Soundblaster X7 soundcard that I would like to use to listen to 5.1 music (I use VLC as the player). I listen to 5.1 DTS, WAV, etc.

Everything works fine, except when certain high-frequency sounds are made for the center or surround back channels there is a cracking sound.

Now, it is not my speakers or my amp -- when I connect the soundcard to the Windows machine and play the same 5.1 files everything works flawlessly without distortion.

In addition, to test I connected earphones to the center and surround outputs of the card when the card is plugged into a Linux machine and hear the same cracking sound (again, it is not the amp).

One more interesting observation: as a mad experiment, I have directly attached the soundcard USB directly to a VirtualBox machine running Windows 10 (with VirtualBox running on my Linux machine in question). It detected it, I installed it, and it did not work. However, when I detach it from the Virtual Machine, and play the same files on Linux the sound card sometimes starts working normally.

Any help is much appreciated!

TUMBLEWEED Cannot switch to the NVIDIA card on an Optimus laptop after setting up Prime

I installed the NVIDIA drivers in an attempt to get Prime working, however after the successful installation of the driver I cannot switch to he NVIDIA card using the
Code:

sudo prime-select nvidia
command.

The terminal instead spits out the following:

Code:

ERROR: Unable to query GPU information

Reconfiguration failed

Restoring previous configuration: undefined.

My Laptop is a Dell Precision 5510 with and Internal NVIDIA Quadro M1000M Graphics card and an Intel P530 integrated graphics.

When installing the NVIDIA driver I was not sure which driver best matched my NVIDIA Quadro Card so I installed the x11-video-nvidiaG05, and it's relevant dependencies, first. However when it did not work I rolled the system back using snapper and then tried x11-video-nvidiaG04 instead but with the same results as mentioned above.

Any help would be much appreciated.

My zenbook cannot find the display attached to the HP USB-C Universal Dock. I have read in older threads that this is a problem with Displaylink. Any packages I can install to make this run smoothly? I have Opensuse 15.1 with latest stable kernel (so that bluetooth and wifi work)

TUMBLEWEED exfat in kernel 5.4 and fuse

Hi, I have noticed TW now has 5.4 kernel, which should contain native support for exfat/fat64. I have fuse-exfat (and exfat-utils) installed from the past. I'm curious which driver will TW use to handle exfat now? Should I rather zypper rm fuse-exfat now to avoid conflict or data loss?

I have been using NTFS on dual boot for some time, all worked fine, no unexpected shutdowns, ntfs support is quite good, yet it led to data corruption eventually. So I switched to fat64 and I had no data corruption since then. What is the recommended way to use exfat with kernel 5.4? I'd rather use it by the book to avoid data corruption again ;-)Thanks.
