TUMBLEWEED Wireless HP Printer Setup

$

Hello all,

I'm new to OpenSUSE I've always gave it a try but my laptop at that time the WiFi will shut off randomly and turn back on. Now this laptop it doesn't do that. I got a HP Deskjet 2652 and on Ubuntu it'll automatically detect it and install it to work wireless, on Arch I had to use the CUPS webpage but I got it working on wireless. The reason why I came to OpenSUSE because I've seen people using it and I heard a lot of good things about it plus I can see myself being a fan of it.

But for OpenSUSE I tried YaST Control Center and clicked on printer option my printer isn't detected. So I follow the OpenSUSE wiki and they had me go through the hp-setup. I got the printer installed but it'll only work if I got it connected the USB. I want to print wireless because this laptop got only 2 USB ports and 1 is used for my wireless keyboard and plus I take this laptop to college with me so I don't want to keep unplugging it every time. I'm on OpenSUSE Plasma

Thank you :)

LEAP 15.1 Remove Nvidia proprietary driver

Hi,

I have installed the nvidia driver but want to use the nouveau driver. I followed the guide in this article: https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_drivers, but it seems the nivida did not get completely deleted.

Code:

opensuse:/home/dagr # sudo lspci -nnk | grep -iA3 VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation GM204 [GeForce GTX 970] [10de:13c2] (rev a1)
Subsystem: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. [MSI] Device [1462:3160]
        Kernel driver in use: nouveau
        Kernel modules: nouveau, nvidia_drm, nvidia

The kernel driver is ok, but the kernel modules seems to show nvidia prop modules is loaded as well. Most things works in plasma, but wobbly when scrolling webpages. I don't like that. If anybody can give me some advice how to fix this I will be very happy.

TUMBLEWEED Package version meaning

$

I see that the package names include the software version and then a dash followed by some other version by openSUSE. E.g., package flex-2.6.4-4.2.x86_64 is flex version 2.6.4 64bit, but what is the meaning of the 4.2? When is the major or the minor updated?

Thanks!

Recent File System Benchmarks - BTRFS XFX Ext4 F2FS

$

Published very recently by Phoronix, a series of benchmark tests.
Don't look at any one page in the tests expecting to see a result that might suggest one file system is better than another,
After stepping through all pages in an article, it'd become apparent that each fs might perform better running certain tests.

Each of the following articles are tests on a different hardware platform, the first link is the only one for single disk.
Each of the others describes different RAID configurations.

One thing that seems to be true for BTRFS in all three articles...
For whatever reason it seems to be much slower initially starting up stuff, eg during a boot and launching an application, but otherwise can perform well.

Enjoy!

I want to install 15.1 on a new DELL XPS system with 256G SSD. When I get to the disk partitioning section, I don't see any mention of the SSD. Shouldn't I see partitioning options for the SSD? All it sees is the HDD. What am I missing here?

Is there another utility for idx/sub --> srt conversion?

I've re-installed leap today on my laptop and never had any issues before using Leap or Tumbleweed. It's pretty much a stock install right now and the only thing I have added was u2f support for my solo key. I've disabled all sound notifications that were available. And I'm still getting a notification sound. I can't figure out what's causing it.

Here is my inxi

TUMBLEWEED Shutter's unmet dependencies, uninstallable libgnome/perl-Gnome2 packages

$

Shutter seems to be broken again on my TW installation (as it sometimes does), but I cannot find at all a good enough alternative for what I want.

On trying to install shutter from Yast, the perl dependencies from Gnome2 cannot be provided (this is essentially the error message). Actually looking through all the repositories, there doesn't seem to even be any gnome2 packages available when searching through Yast. On the other hand, there's both a `libgnome` and `perl-Gnome2` package online, found here and here respectively.

It's also weird since (for example) the `perl-Gnome2` package seems to ask for the TW OSS repo which I am already subscribed to, yet even after `zypper ref` it doesn't show up naturally.

In any case, trying to install either of these packages leads to error, with nothing being installed. I'm stuck on where to proceed from here - any ideas?

Hi Everyone.

I have Sound Blaster X3 and it seems like OpenSuse only sees its 5.1 mode output.

Is there anything I can do to enable it? E.g., perhaps something through /proc settings?

Thank you!

TUMBLEWEED Snapper locks (?) btrfs all the time

$

Hello.

Tumbleweed (20200127 as of now), single btrfs partition.
I have configured snapper with
Code:

# create hourly snapshots
TIMELINE_CREATE="no"

I get desktop notifications that my partition is full 1-3 times a day (and it repeats for every subvolume, which is pretty annoying). I investigated it for some time and came to conclusion that it is just Snapper locking everything to create a snapshot. Fighting with it and deleting snapshots it creates is not very efficient, and the lock is lifted by itself after some time (maybe 5 minutes, maybe 50).
However, I do not want it to create a snapshot when I am not installing anything new or upgrading system, just doing my job using this laptop. And I can not do a lot of things when my OS thinks that / is out of space. Firefox works, but complains, Nextcloud refuses to sync, if I happen to need to install a 100kb package - I can not, not enough space, it says.
My YAST-snapper window looks like this:

I remind you that I do not have hourly or any other type of regular snapshots configured in /etc/snapper/configs/root, but this snapshots just appear all the time (the "yast bootloader" is ok).

What do I do to prevent this from happening?

LEAP 15.1 Installing Nvidia driver

I've got a running system, but it seems to be using the open-source Nvidia driver rather than the proprietary one. I haven't been able to work out how to switch to it. I'm running KDE on a default install of OpenSUSE Leap 15.1.

I've tried going into YaST and then software repositories to find the right repo and then installing the package but I'm not sure which is the right package to install,

LEAP 15.1 using Korganizer in daemon mode (no graphics)?

Hi.

I use Korganizer to set events and reminders, but then if my computer is off korganizer will not send the reminders.
I have a server working 24-365 (without graphics), so I would like to set up the events handler and the reminders in the server.
I have seen that KOrganizer depends on akonadi server to work, so I tried

Code:

fernando@aldebaran:~> akonadictl start
Error: could not determine $DISPLAY.
qt.qpa.screen: QXcbConnection: Could not connect to display
Could not connect to any X display.
Error: akonadi_control was started but didn't register at D-Bus session bus.
Make sure your system is set up correctly!

Can I start Korganizer in "daemon mode"?

Wireguard and Linux Kernel

$

Making the news today, Linux Torvalds posted acceptance of Wireguard into the Linux kernel (plus a few other nuggets).

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2020...l-source-tree/
https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pa....6-Spectacular

Probably more significant than usual, and a glimpse into things that will shortly be available... Maybe showing up in Tumbleweed (and 15.2 likely) within the next couple months, maybe right around the corner.

For those of you who haven't played around with Wireguard,
It's worth a look. IMO its best User feature is it's optional to use Network Manager, VPNs can be difficult to set up without a graphical tool. Wireguard simplifies setup so that the VPN can be set up and managed easily in a command line console.

Wireguard integration comes with an interesting and likely important side technology, support for the Poly1305 cipher for message authentication, the part that ensures you're receiving packets from the other end and not by some impostor. Doing a little research, it looks like this has already been integrated into OpenSSL 1.1, and in fact that may be the easiest way to use it in OpenVPN (only in OpenVPN 3 which has been in Beta for nearly 2 years and no downloads, you have to build the client yourself). Looks like there was a CVE in March 2019, so it's been available for SSL and TLS connections for quite awhile.

Why Poly 1305? Info available on the web... especially in combination with Chacha20, can provide a competitive option to AES, with latest possible optimizations to run on today's CPUs (unlike AES). Which would mean possibly significant decreased latency which could be important on higher load encrypted connections. That's why there's the interest.

And, there is a long list of other "next generation" technologies in the 5.6 kernel.
Read the phoronix link above and salivate.
Can hardly wait, the kernel you're using no matter the version will be yesterday's news immediately as soon as 5.6 is available.

I have installed Virtualbox 5.1.14(opensuse-152 version) from their website. I am trying to compile the modules with '/sbin/vboxconfig' as root.

P.S. [ I know that is two year old version and I can install the latest TW-version which I have uninstalled as it is producing inexplicable freezes on winxp guest on serial port. Before uninstalling official VB versions, I have tried VB 6.1.2 (over current 6.0.4) from unofficial build too. Both produce the same result. But 5.1.4 had been working for me on another machine till recently. Serial port use is part of my work ]

The compilation itself generates no error till the end,but the module does not get built. I have looked up their scripts, but do not see anything amiss.I blame it on my inexpert eye.

I am attaching the install log here.[It seems I am not allowed, I only include the last part] Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
