LEAP 15.1 15.1 install on SSD - installer doesn't seem to recognize the SSD

I want to install 15.1 on a new DELL XPS system with 256G SSD. When I get to the disk partitioning section, I don't see any mention of the SSD. Shouldn't I see partitioning options for the SSD? All it sees is the HDD. What am I missing here?

TUMBLEWEED How to lower the iwlwifi card temperature using Tumbleweed on a Lenovo

$

Hello everyone!

I don't know if I'm in the right place, and I apologize for my English, as I'm using the google translator.

I would like to share that I got in touch with Linux in 2017… Then I got into a distro crisis… Where I tested all I could.
I ended up choosing Debian, and openSUSE Tumbleweed.

The problem is that I would like to pass the Tumbleweed to my newest machine, a Lenovo IdeaPad 330-15Ikb (Intel I3 7020U), but the iwlwifi card (Intel Dual Band Wireless-Ac 3165) is very hot, + / - 54º celsos.
What does not happen with Debian, where the same iwlwifi card has a much lower temperature, around 37º.
And that I don't understand ... I know that this plate works safely until 80º, but in my short vision, the colder it works the better. Not to mention that I perform exactly the same tasks on both machines ... There shouldn't be that difference.

My goal is to pass the Tumbleweed to Lenovo, and install the Leap on the Acer E5-511 (Intel Celeron N2940)… Which, by the way, handles the Tumbleweed Gnome wonderfully.
I already tried to install the Leap on Lenovo, but it gives problems with the wifi connection… Neither networks appear. So he stays with Debian.

Nothing against Debian, quite the contrary, is that I fell in love with Zypper.

Can anyone give me a light?

Sincerely,
Luiz

LEAP 15.1 Wrong PATH in GNOME Terminal

$

In a GNOME X session, when I open the GNOME Terminal application, the shell does not have the values I would expect in the PATH Environment Variable.

Looking at /etc/profile, I would expect the PATH variable to contain the User's bin directory ($HOME/bin), but instead I am seeing:

Code:

# echo $PATH
/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/sbin:/usr/X11R6/bin

I believe something is setting the PROFILEREAD variable too early because if I unset that variable, I can source my User .profile file (which sources /etc/profile) and see the values I would expect:
Code:

# unset PROFILEREAD
# . ~/.profile
# echo $PATH
~/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin

Also, connecting via SSH yields the correct values in the PATH variable.

I have been searching /etc for lines that would set or reset the PATH or PROFILEREAD variables like this, but I am not having luck.

LEAP 15.1 in a pinch AMD CPU/GPU/APU shopping

Blind fried bought this Asus Socket AM4 B450 chipset motherboard with RAM, PS and a sans-GPU CPU at Best Buy and brought it to me with his fried A88X PC to replace the guts and get his fresh 15.1 back in business. Before his wife dropped it off, I discovered the lack of video functionality and they left with the GPU to exchange it at Best Buy for a CPU with onboard video. I found they were about to order this from Newegg because Best Buy couldn't deliver anything appropriate within the next 10 days. I told them don't do it until I find out if it's old enough for no-hassles use with 15.1. Well, that model was first offered 2 months after 15.1 release, so it seems likely I need to find something older, but how? I can't tell how anyone is supposed to navigate the AMD product name and number maze to tell if a product is old enough to be trouble-free. It's one reason why the only new products I buy have Intel CPUs and chipsets.

Any suggestions for a currently available CPU/GPU/APU for Socket AM4, to match up something from Asus support with something Newegg can ship right out? It only needs to work without fuss. He can't see enough to play games, care how fast the screen draws, or compile software.

LEAP 15.1 Driver for logitech C170 webcam

$

Using Leap 15.1 with KDE. Up-to-date with all latest updates.
I've installed Skype (which works fine just with headphones and microphone). I have now plugged in a Logitech C170 webcam (which includes a microphone) which doesn't seem to be recognised. This works fine with a Windows system.
I had assumed, without much thought, that when I just plugged it in then it would magically spring to life. Sadly it didn't.
I suspect I need to install an appropriate driver. Can anyone point me to where such a driver might be found.

As with the vast majority of webcams this has a USB plug.
This model - the C170 - is a slightly less functional (and cheaper) version of the C270. Alternatively you could say the C270 is a slightly beefed up version of the C170.

Many thanks for your help.

TUMBLEWEED Samsung 860 EVO SSD with AMD controller - have to disable NCQ?

$

Is anyone running Tumbleweed with an AMD controller and the Samsung 860 EVO SSD? If yes, is it working OK with NCQ enabled?

Having just migrated my /home to a Samsung 860 EVO SSD I started seeing errors such as
Code:

Jan 30 13:18:48 kosmos1 kernel: ata4.00: failed command: WRITE FPDMA QUEUED
Jan 30 13:18:48 kosmos1 kernel: ata4.00: cmd 61/38:10:18:7a:d6/00:00:03:00:00/40 tag 2 ncq dma 28672 out
res 40/00:58:78:67:d6/00:00:03:00:00/40 Emask 0x10 (ATA bus error)
Jan 30 13:18:48 kosmos1 kernel: ata4.00: status: { DRDY }

The errors may be related to AMD controllers and the 860 EVO. In my case that would be the AMD 970/SB950.

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=201693
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Solid_state_drive#Resolving_NCQ_errors

https://eu.community.samsung.com/t5/.../575813/page/4

I've read these kinds of errors can also be due to bad cables and bad power supplies. My system was working fine with all the same components and cables and an EVO 850 as it's root drive. I've re-seated all cables and swapped them around, with no change.

In my case the kernel seems to have managed to recover from the errors and when compared with backups I've yet to discover any corruption. I've disabled NCQ and the errors have not recurred.

LEAP 15.2 ksplashqml crashing

Fired up SUSE Leap this morning and got an error:

"we are sorry, ksplashqml closed unexpectedly"

, with options to restart application or close. Either action does nothing and requires a reboot, with exactly the same result. I cannot get the system to boot cleanly.

All this seems to have occurred after rebooting following an update of various application components. Any suggestions what went wrong.

LEAP 15.1 OpenSUSE with slowness and crashes

I'm having serious problems with slowness and crashes on all machines that use opensuse. I use 15.1 and also older Leap on older machines.
This problem is getting serious and older machines, which have 2M of memory. They are becoming difficult to use.
The curious thing is that just a few months ago, everything worked well.
Even this machine I'm using now with 4M of memory and Leap 15.1 is slow and almost always crashes.
There is something that can be done to solve this problem.

LEAP 15.1 Adding permanently at boot: xhost local:root

Hello,
I want to run Backintime as root but I had the error message
Code:

No protocol specified
Error: couldn't open display :0

I found the issue: I need to add
Code:

xhost local:root
But this is only temporary, I want it permanently. I can't find a easy way to do it.
Where and how to add this command in the boot process that could be helpful for any application running as root/GUI?

Thank you for your help

TUMBLEWEED Network sometimes become very slow

$

After recent kernel upgrades wire network sometimes become very slow after few hours of work ~ 50KB/sec while my Ethernet is 100Mb/sec. This happens regardless network management used: wicked or NetworkManager. PC restart does not help - only full power-off/on. What it could be and how to solve?

TUMBLEWEED Strange swap behavior

$

Recent time observing strange situation: custom app with memory leak eats all the memory (16GB size) and apps unloading to the swap (16GB as well), after killing problematic app, can't get system to work again: KSysGuard shows many processes waiting on disk like:
  • plasmashell
  • firefox
  • etc

and they become unresponsive to keyboard, mouse, etc. So forced to kill and restart them as well and even reboot PC as there are many others processes appear in "unknown" or "waiting on disk" states. Why kernel, KDE or whatever do not load apps to the memory again? How to solve this?

What happened to Linux?! In 2.x versions swap works perfect unloaded applications to swap and put them back immediately like a charm.

Problem also described here:
https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1114589#c33
https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1114589#c23

Forced to set -s 100,100 for earlyoom to not use swap at all and kill the app over critical level of memory.

LEAP 15.1 shoutcast op clementine

Ik gebruik leap 15.1
met KDE 5.12.8

clementine 1.3.1 via yast geinstaleerd

LEAP 15.1 Some videos render with false colors on Chromium, render correctly on Firefox

Chromium does not correctly render videos. Firefox does.

Example, using Youtube: a search for

opensuse conference 2019

chromium, provides false colors
firefox, works as expected

Sound words correctly on both.

Note that this occurs on a wide variety of scenarios. However, sometimes, videos render correctly on both browsers.

I think there is some setting that is not installed correctly by default on the Linux chromium browser.

Any ideas?

TUMBLEWEED Calibre tray icon no longer responds to mouse right-click

Hello.

On hover, the tray icon (KDE) displays an informational popup (e.g. showing number of running jobs) buy no longer responds to right-click action to allow me to quit the application. The calibre in-app menu/toolbar does not seem to have a quit button, so I am unable to gracefully exit the application as I have been able to do for years.

I have disabled the tray icon in the meantime so that closing the calibre window exits the program.

This is new behaviour in the last month or so.

Anyone else?

TUMBLEWEED Firefox rendering slow, process Web Content at 100%

On all my computers, Firefox renders all map websites (Google Maps and especially the Swiss hiking map map.schweizmobil.ch) very slow and the process Web Content (in top) is always at least at 100% when using these sites. The behavior is the same when you are using webrender or not. When I use Google Chrome on these sites they load and render very quickly and also the system load is much less.

Ruby gems

I actually use Ruby a lot. One reason is that, when paired with a good dsl framework, it is often less code with greater clarity to write in Ruby than Python. A perfect example is Sinatra vs Flask. In Flask, routes are separate from the code and in decorators. In Sinatra, a route and it's implementation is together as a closure, and ruby can do a lot of automatic magic for handling form arguments, json conversion, etc.

openSUSE has a darth of packaged gems in the main repo. Of course, you can always grab and build a gem directly, much like what pip does for python. But I like having pre-built gems. There is devel:languages:ruby:extensions in osc, but with thousands of packages it still surprisingly lacked a number of common ruby gems that I routinely use, such as sequel_pg to improve sequel performance, zmq, mqtt, and the fast c-coded json gem. It's very easy to use gem2rpm to create packages, so I built a quick obs project for the gems I care about that are missing from opensuse default repos: https://build.opensuse.org/project/show/home:dyfet:ruby

LEAP 15.1 Touchpad not working on Dell XPS 9560

I have installed OpenSUSE Leap 15.1 on a Dell XPS 9560. I believe the touchpad is Synaptics. The touchpad did not work during installation nor after updates. If I open the Touchpad system settings program in KDE Plasma it says "No touchpad found".

I tried updating the Kernel from 4.12 to 5.5.1-1 but this has made no difference. I also tried GRUB options such as "psmouse.synaptics_intertouch=0" but that did not work either. I had no such problems with Leap 15.0. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Paul
