How do I secure my wifi?

$

This is my first post here. Recently, My friends and I went through this horrible time period where a guy from our workplace hack our wifi and ultimately hack into our conversations and credentials. After this dilemma, I am very much curious about my wifi security. The problem is that with my increased daily workload I can't research the solutions. All I want is a basic checklist to check every time and it would be more good If I can have a solution as a product. Which can secure my connection once and for all whether I am at home or not? Do you guys have any idea about this?

SDB: System Upgrade - Remove references to 42.1, 42.2 and 42.3

https://en.opensuse.org/SDB_Talk:System_upgrade

Today there was an edit to the SDB: System Upgrade that removed references to 42.1, 42.2 and 42.3 with a cryptic reason suggesting that it was for no other reason than those versions were no longer officially supported (EOL).

I posted a "Discussion" where I opined that EOL is not a valid reason for removing the references to 42.1, 42.2 and 42.3 because there are people out there who are stuck with old machines and want to know how to upgrade and should know that the SDB applies just fine to those LEAP versions.

Comment anyone?

LEAP 15.1 PyYAML/docker-compose conflict

$

I started seeing an odd issue on my laptop this week and I'm not sure what the cause or fix is. One of the official patches, openSUSE-2020-290, couldn't be applied when it came to my computer. I just ignored it at first thinking a fix would be coming but not yet. Today I tried to manually update PyYAML2 and when I do that I see this.

Code:

> zypper up python2-PyYAML
Loading repository data...
Reading installed packages...
Resolving package dependencies...

Problem: docker-compose-1.17.0-lp151.3.2.noarch conflicts with python-PyYAML >= 4 provided by python2-PyYAML-5.1.2-lp151.2.3.1.x86_64
 Solution 1: deinstallation of docker-compose-1.17.0-lp151.3.2.noarch
Solution 2: do not install python2-PyYAML-5.1.2-lp151.2.3.1.x86_64

Both docker-compose and PyYAML2 are installed from the main repos as seen here:

Code:

> zypper info python2-PyYAML
Loading repository data...
Reading installed packages...

Information for package python2-PyYAML:

Status        : out-of-date (version 3.13-lp151.1.1 installed)

Code:

> zypper info docker-compose
Loading repository data...
Reading installed packages...

Information for package docker-compose:
---------------------------------------
Repository    : Main Repository
Name          : docker-compose
Version        : 1.17.0-lp151.3.2
Arch          : noarch
Vendor        : openSUSE

Installed      : Yes
Status        : up-to-date

I also tried option 1 (removing docker-compose) and that did allow PyYAML2 to update. But then when I went to install docker-compose again it forced PyYAML2 to downgrade. :( Any idea what could be causing that and what I can do to fix it?

Thanks!

LEAP 15.1 Gnome Desktop: Folder 'Files' changed into 'Dolphin' after routine package update.

Hi All,

After routine online update of packages on 05 Mar 2020, when I opened my desktop 'Home' folder, I found that its behavior was like 'Dolphin' folder of KDE.
Sometime back, I had installed 'Dolphin' for transfer of files between the laptop and my Android phone, through the 'split screen' of Dolphin. It has been working fine this far. But since this update, the mentioned phenomenon has occurred on its own.
I would like to have the 'Files' back on my Desktop.

Help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

RSP2

I updated today one of my leap15.1 computers and I received this message:

Is this a bug or is this python-nbxmpp.noarch package not yet up to date?

Is this the right place to ask this question? Yast indicates I have xscreensaver already installed, but I can't figure out how to run it. I need to set my screen to blank after 120 minutes, no screen lock. I've figured out the no screen lock, but how the heck do I set the screen blanking? Thanks.

Hello there. I'm on the verge of installing OpenSUSE Tumbleweed for the first time. I've read a review in Distrowatch which claims that frequent updates cause excessive use of disk space. Isn't there automatic removal of old snapshots in Tumbleweed? Thanks in advance.

LEAP 15.1 ip alias not pingable from outside world.

Hi, have a server from hetzner. have followed thier tut `edit configuration file manually` to add ip alias for my add on ip, so i can use it with lxd later on.
but the problem is the add on ip is not pingable from outside the server.
ip a
eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state UP group default qlen 1500 link/ether MAC_ADDRESS brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff inet HOST_IP/26 brd HOST_IP_BORADCAST scope global eth0 valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever inet ADD_ON_IP/29 brd ADD_ON_BORADCAST scope global eth0 valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever

I can ping it on host terminal. but can not ping it from home.
note: the add-on ip has different gateway than the host.
i tried modifying `/etc/sysconfig/network/ifroute-eth0`
adding ADDONIP - - eth0
reboot
but still the same.
am i doing something wrong? or ip alias not supposed to be pingable?
note: using firewalld, with default external.

TUMBLEWEED Fan running at full speed - Tumbleweed

$

I am just starting with Linux and I have installed Tumbleweed and updated with the latest. At the moment, I have one issue which I believe is pretty common with Linux. My Fan is running at full speed for no apparent reason. CPU is barely utilized. I have enough RAM (64G). What I have done up to now is installed TLP, and Thermald after reading a couple of post. I have tried to play with cpupower to set the governor to powersave but to no avail. I am using KDE with all the latest. For the sake of testing, I did run ubuntu 20.04 vanila and do not have that issue. I would prefer to stick with Opensuse, because of Yast which allows me to be able to do stuff without having to type command lines. Any help is much appreciated of course because the noise of the fan makes my rig unusable.

Hi,

my apologies if this isn't the right place to post this - I couldn't see a better forum. Please advise & I'll move it.

Occasionally, with Gnome3 I get a checkerboard corruption of the login screen. Once logged in the screen is fine (using Xorg). Where should I look / what should I change to fix this?

Thanks
David

LEAP 15.1 after update of nvidia graphics driver, not able to login in my user name

$

I did an upgrade of nvidia drivers from G04 to G05 using yast as I saw I could use higher level driver (GEforce 1050 ti). Software manager removed all the G04 files and installed the G05 files. G05 in software opensuse nvidia repo is same software version number that nvidia recommended for this video card on their website. I thought I was secure.

After unenabling the nvida repo, I did a reboot. Reboot proceed fine until user login cam up. I was unable to login using my user name and pw. After user login screen just froze. It keeps saying "not listed" underneath normal login box. I tried all the desktops that I have installed (mate is my standard) and mu user name was not accepted and "not listed" kept coming up

I clicked onto user "not listed" and was able to login successfully as root to mate desktop and to other desktops. I went to yast group and user management and my user name was listed there as before. I looked at settings and it said that my user login was not disabled. I did notice that " move home to new directory" was checked. I don't remember that before. I dont know what that means. I unchecked that with no effect.

My home directory files are still there as I could see them as root.

Any suggestions? The video seems to be working fine but something got modified in this change somewhere.
