LEAP 15.1 Network no longer works using wicked after today's (March 21) automatic updates

Hi - Has anyone else had this problem? I'm running OpenSuse Leap 15.1 and all has been stable for a long time. Immediately after today's updates installed, the network stopped working. I could not get Wireless to work which is all I ever use on this laptop. I rebooted and no difference. After investigating many things, I discovered that if I complete delete the network configuration using Yast and add it again, the network will work after that. However, as soon as I reboot, it fails again. I resolved this for now, by using Network Manager rather than Wicked. A little less convenient for me so I'd like to go back. But in the mean time, it works for me. Any ideas on what to check? When I say it stopped working after updates, I literally mean I was using my browser while the updating was going on and as soon as I got the notification that the updates finished, the network stopped working. I noticed that one of the updates was wpa_suppicant which makes me wonder whether this might somehow be the culprit. Thanks.

TUMBLEWEED HPLIP Icon Inactive

The icon for the current version of the hplip program, HP Device Manager, is not active in Gnome when clicked.

I've had people walk me through problem solving this before, but it so rarely happens that I have to learn all over again every time.

Can someone walk me through how to correct "dead icon" bugs.

Thanks so much!

microfocus login page not working

If I click on "Login" at the top of a Forum page, I get to
https://login.microfocus.com/nidp/id...forum.php%2522
(possibly with some different "destination" field depending on which page I'm looking at)
However the "Login" button on this page doesn't do anything: Firefox shows no hyperlink behind it. It makes no difference whetheror not I type in my username and password, the button is still not alive.
If I click on "Login Assistance", I get to
https://www.suse.com/selfreg/jsp/forgotAll.jsp
and if I then click on "Account" it shows a dropdown login window on which I can successfully log in.
There seem to have been some similar problems posted in the past, but they are all closed, and this issue is definitely reproducible and still current for me.
Browser is (according to its about page)
Firefox Quantum Extended Support Release 68.6.0esr (64-bit)
Firefox for openSUSE Leap openSUSE - 15.1

LEAP 15.1 bond or team?

https://doc.opensuse.org/documentation/leap/reference/html/book.opensuse.reference/cha-network.html#sec-network-iface-teaming

According to the documentation, team is now the new implementation to load balancing and failover network cards - and do pretty the same work as bond.
I have tried team and it seams to work quite well.

One disadvantage is that yast still do not support this.

Regarding this, what is your implementation? Bond or team?
Did you try to setup team with autoyast?
Maybe someone know what was the reason to implement team as bond seems to work pretty good?

What about the dependency (cooperation) with team + vlan and bridge - I am trying to use team in KVM virtualization.
(the reason I put this thread in virtualization section).

TUMBLEWEED VLC Downloads video files from SMB Shared Directory to local cache directory before playing.

I was not sure if I should be posting this under Multimedia or Applications, hopefully I have chosen the right location for posting it.

What I want to do:

I am trying to play the video files which are shared on a NAS via SMB share on my OpenSUSE Tumbleweed laptop with VLC in place, as in straight from the shared location, just like I can with the Windows machines on the same network using the VLC for windows.

What Happens:

Instead of playing the file in place, the VLC (Or dolphin, I am not sure on this) first downloads the files to a local cache folder (~/user/.cache/kioexec/krun/) and then plays the file. This is sometimes a lengthy process as some of the files are huge, 80+ Gigabytes.

This is what happens when I double click on the file in the shared location on the network. Opening the VLC, and browsing over to the file using the Open File feature fails to open the file altogether with a "SMB error: open failed (Invalid Argument)".

As I previously mentioned the VLC for Windows installed on the windows machines of the same network works just fine playing the same files, regardless of their size, straight from the NAS.

Any help is very much appreciated.

LEAP 15.1 rmt in opensuse 15.1

It is possible to use rmt in opensuse just for opensuse repository and without registration to scc?

I have skip the scc credential in rmt.conf file and now each time I am trying to sync or run rmt I am getting:
The SCC credentials are not configured correctly in '/etc/rmt.conf'. You can obtain them from https://scc.suse.com/organization

Maybe I need a account, but without any subscription - or without attaching to scc with SUSE ent. licencse I am not able to use rmt in purely opensuse environment?

LEAP 15.1 Erratic wireless connection with Broadcom BCM4313 and similar cards

$

Hi,

I have an old MacBook Pro running OpenSUSE Leap 15.1 instead of macOS. Everything works fine, except that wireless connections sometimes behave erratically. As far as I could make it out, some access points work fine and others don't.

First things first, here's the card.

Code:

# lspci | grep -i network
25:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Limited BCM4313 802.11bgn
Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01)

I installed b43-fwcutter and then the firmware:

Code:

# zypper install b43-fwcutter
# install_bcm43xx_firmware

And just to be on the safe side, I blacklisted the free drivers (which don't work at all):

Code:

# zypper addlock broadcom-wl
# zypper addlock broadcom-wl-kmp-default

I rebooted, and wireless works OK most of the time.

Here's the curious part.

Sometimes I see various available access points except those in the immediate vicinity. Sometimes I disconnect and all available access points suddenly disappear. Sometimes they reappear, sometimes they don't. I'm describing all this as it appears to me, since most of the time this seems completely random.

I've installed a Dell Latitude laptop for one of my clients some time ago. This laptop has a Broadcom 43XXX card (must verify which one exactly) and the client recently described a similar erratic malfunction. What happened with his machine was even more puzzling. It worked perfectly in my office on no less than three different access points. Then I snail-mailed the laptop to him, and he can't use it in his office, because all access points except his show up.

Any suggestions ?

Cheers from the sunny (and confined) South of France,

Niki

Hello!

How to start a KDE 3 session? I mean, which window manager should I choose as default in etc/sysconfig-Editor?
At the moment it is default in.

Why KDE 3?
KDE Plasma is really to heavy for my old netbook. When I noticed, the KDE 3 repository is maintained again

I thought, I try this.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions

[Mark needed] Bonsole - browser console

$

I need to mark my project, which I uploaded to sourceforge.net ( https://sourceforge.net/projects/bonsole/ ) .

It allows to create Rich Textual Applications. These kind of apps will display in Browser (bonsole) window, if it;s available. If not, it will translates markup code to text with terminal escaping sequence. Currently, textual/without graphics mode isn't supported.

Application run by Bonsole must call some function from client library. This function checks if there's exist some variables in environment, point to fd to acquire cookie. This function also prepare client lib for processing app output, listing xsl files.

Application generates XML output and when decided to swap Bonsole's window content, XML output is processed by xsl files in order like in other places on Linux systems (xsl files beginning with natural number). Yes, we translate output of app by first xsl file, output of this file by another one and so on...

I also plan add new pipe kind. This kind of pipes uses normal fd, but it can have name known by application and data generated by application to this pipe will be filtered by some files, I think xsl could be one of option, but xsl is related to xml, so we must have each tag enclosed. This implies app must generate whole output.

Currently we have only one example app - app similar to ls.

To use Bonsole, you must give an argument with path to xsl files.
--bonsole-wa-xsl-dir /path/to/xsls
Default xls is placed in project_dir/data/xslt

Code:

in my /etc/sudoers file but want to lock it down by replacing the first ALL with the correct user. So for tried “mail” and “postfix”. Neither work. what should it be?

Thanks

LEAP 15.2 Failed SSH login attempts on my server

Hello everyone,

i set up a little home server a few days ago where i run a Minecraft server and also hosted a rather minimalistic Website with apache2. The Website simply consisted of the Phrases "Check out my Minecraft Server" and then the domain of my server (I set up a DynDNS domain with NO-IP.com). I forward The port of my MC server, http and ssh port from my router to my server. The ssh port to have remote access when im not home. Since i was a bit worried with the publicly visible ssh port i decided to read how to check the ssh logs on my server and now i am a bit worried since there where actually many login attemps from several ips (All reported failed fortunately) which look like some sort of dictonary attack. Here an Excerpt from the logs:

as can be seen the attemps are quite new and many of them in almost 1 second or so. I have changed my password already to make it a bit safer but i am a bit concerned about this. I already shut down the apache server and closed the ssh and http port to be save. Was that the right decision or is it not to worry if i have a randomly generated save password?

igor@SLES:~/Загрузки> zypper in google-chrome-stable_current_x86_64.rpm
Root privileges are required for installing or uninstalling packages.
igor@SLES:~/Загрузки> sudo zypper in google-chrome-stable_current_x86_64.rpm

I need share some data between linux distros installed on hdd. Does it matter if these will be placed for example in /shareddata or /home/shareddata ?

I guess the most recommended way is to create partition for data only, but reason in this case is utilizing free disk space of existing distros without changing partitions.
