TUMBLEWEED Realtek RTL8821 not recognised

$

Hi everybody!

I have been having problems installing opensuse on my new IdeaPad S540 (Model name 81NH).

I tried installing the latest Leap 15.1, but even during the installation process, it did not see my network card, and the touch acted weirdly and the froze.

Thinking of a driver/firmware problem, I tried installing Tumbleweed. That solved the touchpad problem, but not the wifi issue: when I was offer the ossibility by Yast to "edit" a network card during install, Yast simply crashed, after displaying an error message. Same behaviour after install.

The card is listed by Yast -> Hardware info as a RTL8821.

Systemlogs are not very helpful, here is what I could find:

Code:

ACPI: [Firmware Bug]: BIOS _OSI(Linux) query ignored
acpi PNP0A08:00: [Firmware Info]: MMCONFIG for domain 0000 [bus 00-3f] only partially covers this bridge

<info>  [1585085082.3210] rfkill0: found Wi-Fi radio killswitch (at /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:14.3/PNP0C09:00/VPC2004:00/rfkill/rfkill0) (platform driver ideapad_acpi)
<info>  [1585085082.3585] manager[0x55cc149d2070]: rfkill: Wi-Fi hardware radio set enabled
<info>  [1585085082.3585] manager[0x55cc149d2070]: rfkill: WWAN hardware radio set enabled

iwlist finds only the lo interface, which does not support scanning, and iwconfig also finds only lo, with no wireless extension.

The kernel is 5.5.9.1

Any help as usual greatly appreciated!

Best,
Federico

LEAP 15.1 Wireless Adapter not detected any more after kernel update

$

Hi!

I am using Leap 15.1. After a recent kernel update, my network was suddenly disabled. It seems to me that there might be drivers missing, but I am not sure. I did not find any threads about this issue.

Kernel version:
Code:

@linux-625c:~> uname -r
4.12.14-lp151.28.40-default

This is my output of lspci | grep network:
Code:

@linux-625c:~> sudo lspci | grep Network
03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Dual Band Wireless-AC 3168NGW [Stone Peak] (rev 10)

Output of lspci -n | grep rev\ 10:
Code:

@linux-625c:~> /sbin/lspci -n | grep rev\ 10
03:00.0 0280: 8086:24fb (rev 10)

Output of iwconfig:
Code:

@linux-625c:~> sudo iwconfig
sudo iwconfig
eth0      no wireless extensions.

lo        no wireless extensions.

Apparently, my wireless adapter is gone. This is what I got from dmesg | grep iwlwifi:
Code:

@linux-625c:~> dmesg | grep iwlwifi
[    9.636653] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: loaded firmware version 29.1654887522.0 op_mode iwlmvm

[    9.814851] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: Failed to run INIT ucode: -61

I thought reinstalling the drivers might be worth a try, so I googled and found this:
https://opensuse-guide.org/wlan.php

Quote:
"Intel are cooperating quite well with the Linux-kernel developers and all Intel wifi chips should just work."

I am not sure what to do next. Can anyone help me?

OTHER VERSION "Rotating" Linus stick

Hello,
For a while now, I've had a spare 512GB NvMe M2 drive. I stuck it in a USB3+3.1 elcosure and I haven't found a solid plan for it yet. I would like to turn it into a "Rotating" linux stick.

Basically, In this stick I wish to set up a common
/home and /EFI
and start with LEAP 15.1 root, LEAP 15.2 root and Tumbleweed root, all sharing the same home.

The idea is to basically rotate from current, future and rolling distributions to test and make sure everything is up to date and compatible with all (or most) of my machines then clone the best combination of / and /home into my machines.

I have done something like this before, where I had LEAP 42.3, 15.0 and 15.1 installed into a same SSD using the same /home HDD then I wiped the partitions in the SSD I no longer use.

Are there any hints or warning that I should watch out for? The barebone will look something like:
1GB /EFi
100GB /home
75GB LEAP 15.1 /
75GB LEAP 15.2 /
75GB Tumbleweed /
75GB CentOS/Ununtu/Fedora... etc. /

OTHER VERSION "New" user and questions

Im currently considering installing opensuse for my hp laptop, as of right now, running windows 10. I was recommended to try out opensuse by a friend, who stated that this distro would be perfect for me because of yast and other linux features. im a complete noob when it comes to linux, and I dont like working in a command line as it makes me nervous as there is little visual feed back of what ive just done. my past "experience" was in dual booting the same system years back with windows 7 and linux mint. I did not like linux mint as I found the experience very clunky, but as of right now I am very displeased with windows 10 as it always feels like im in a fight with it for control over my computer. If I change a setting in windows 10 it usually reverts right back in the next update. So here I am again considering to use linux, but I have questions this time. What is a kernel, what is a desktop environment, what is a package manger, what are packages, why do packages need updating, how does software updates work on linux, how do system updates work, do I need to use the command line to update my system or can I use a gui like yast? I may have more questions but the main one is how do I update from version to version without using the command line?
I apologize if this is the wrong place to post a questions like this, this felt like the best fit.
Thank you for your time, Robert.

Hello,

I have been trying to build tinyspline.
https://github.com/msteinbeck/tinyspline

I could not build tinyspline with OBS.
The fatal error is

Code:

[  55s] /home/abuild/rpmbuild/BUILD/tinyspline-0.2.0+git.1584996308.33462b8/src/tinyspline.c:2069: undefined reference to `sqrt'

I ask about this error to the author of tinyspline which the author fix it but would not work with OBS.
https://github.com/msteinbeck/tinyspline/issues/152

I tried building with normal cmake like wise and it pass.
Code:

wget https://github.com/msteinbeck/tinyspline/archive/snapshot.tar.gz
tar xf snapshot.tar.gz
cd tinyspline-snapshot
mkdir build
cd build
cmake ..
cmake --build .

I don't understand why building with OBS did not work but building with normal cmake work.

Here is my spec file: https://build.opensuse.org/package/v....spec?expand=1
Here is the error log: https://build.opensuse.org/package/l...bleweed/x86_64

Thanks.

Plant openSUSE auch den Qualcomm-Snapdragon-8cx-Prozessor (ARM64/aarch64) zu unterstüzen?

Hallo,

I get the below message when trying to install opensuse leap 15.1 on a lenovo e15

Your computer does not fulfill all requirements for a graphical installation. There is either less than 96MB memory or the X server could not be started. As fallback,the text front end of YAST2 will guide you through the installation. This front-end offers the same functionality as the graphical one,but the screens differ from those in the terminal.

TUMBLEWEED Postgresql configuration

Hi. I've recently switched from Ubuntu to openSUSE. After installing postgresql following instructions given on openSUSE wiki, I tried to run sudo -u postgres psql but it required a password.
Based on postgresql documentation there's no default password for postgres. Anyway, in /var/lib/pgsql/data/pg_hba.conf I changed the authentication method for local all local users to trust, restarted postgresql service and tried again but still a password was required.
I even tried setting a password for postgres via psql but nothing changed.

Did anybody hear about this?

I know that most of us (as well as developers) ignore the board completely but I would expect to see something about this in the news section for example.

LEAP 15.1 Strange power problem with Acer laptop

$

My wife's ACER V5-571 laptop exhibits a strange problem. If we run it and then power off it will power down and then immediately power on again, if we power it up and then do nothing but hibernate it will do exactly that and power down OK, if we run it for a while doing stuff like email and web browsing it will not power off at the end of a hibernate process. I have tried both hibernate and shutdown from a console and using the KDE menu items but the problems are the same which ever I use. The laptop is fully up to date with fixes on Leap 15.1. With regards to the hibernate it does have a large swap some 3 times bigger than the actual memory and swap is active. Also if I wait for a couple of minutes after it will not power down from a hibernate I can force a power off using the power button and it will resume OK!

Now I have no idea where to start debugging this so I guess I'm asking for pointers for things to try?

LEAP 15.1 Installation of Zoom client on my Laptop

After the wonderful tips and hints I received from the post Keeping going in times of corona isolation

I decided to try out Zoom.

(Note: Normally, I don't install software that is not in the OpenSuse or Packman repo, but this time I had no alternative!)

Whereas the installation of the Zoom client (Version 3.5.374815.0324_openSUSE-1) worked fine on my Gnome Destop, it failed on my laptop wit the message that nothing provides ibus-m17n

Does anyone know how to solve this?

Cheers
hn

OK. Problem solved! The reason was that I had disabled the Main Repository on my laptop. This post can be deleted!!!

Leap 15.0 Не входит в интернет но раздает

Opensuse Leap 15.0

Witam.
Code:

  linux:~ # cat /root/.gammurc

  port = /dev/ttyS0
  connection = at115200

TUMBLEWEED Failed to start Setup Virtual Console

I'm seeing the ""Failed to start Setup Virtual Console" error during boot. While system seems to be working normally I'd love to get rid of this.
I've been digging through the net about the issue and it seems I'm not alone. I haven't found a topic with solution though :( .

checked the logs (journalctl -xb) and I found this:

Code:

mar 26 22:28:48 domek-main systemd-vconsole-setup[455]: /usr/bin/loadkeys failed with exit status 1.
mar 26 22:28:48 domek-main systemd-modules-load[454]: Inserted module 'dm_multipath'
mar 26 22:28:48 domek-main systemd-vconsole-setup[459]: cannot open file Pl02

/et/vconsole.conf has the entries:

Code:

KEYMAP=Pl02
FONT=eurlatgr.psfu
FONT_MAP=
FONT_UNIMAP=

(as you might have guessed I have language set to Polish)

When I check with
Code:

systemctl --full status systemd-vconsole-setup
I get:

Code:

● systemd-vconsole-setup.service - Setup Virtual Console
    Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/systemd-vconsole-setup.service; static; vendor preset: disabled)
    Active: inactive (dead) since Thu 2020-03-26 22:28:50 CET; 4min 45s ago
      Docs: man:systemd-vconsole-setup.service(8)
            man:vconsole.conf(5)
    Process: 1130 ExecStart=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd-vconsole-setup (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)
  Main PID: 1130 (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)

Any ideas howto fix this?
