LEAP 15.2 Some comments from installs

$

This post is about certain things encountered while installing openSuse Leap 15.2 into a dual OS environment on 2 computers. I kept hitting these issues and finally decided to make some comment.

1. Installing all the available desktops using the patterns tab on Yast software maintenance left daemon files which got powered up in one desktop environment where they should never had appeared. It appears that desktop installations should NOT leave traces of daemons around, but unfortunately that is occurring, particularly for the file indexers. I finally ended up with some type of low level interrupts, which chewed up the disk time and paralyzed the desktop continually making any work impossible. I thought a desktop environment install would have left software only functional in that environment, but systemd kept collecting new tasks until finally the system was tasked out. Looking at sysconfig revealed the problem area. There were interacting conflicts.

2. I had much trouble with fixing btfs partition problems, as I could not find a rescue system which was able to handle the ntfs partitions of Windows and the btfs partitions of linux. The openSuse rescue disk crashed spectacularly when I went to resize a windows partition. I understand that each creator of software wants their own product to function perfectly, but in a multiple OS environment, it seems that the customer needs the best of both worlds. Knoppix 8.6 would NOT even handle the btfs partition, this is a serious deficiency of what is a fairly good stand-alone rescue system.

3. Each OS wants to wipe out the other system partitions during install time. This is understandable, but requires great care to NOT wipe out good data and the Master Boot Record. I had to continually switch to Expert Partitioner during linux install mode, because the windows partitions were scheduled to be destroyed and reformatted. I see the same problem from the windows install and even after a successfull system install, MS Windows seems to think linux partitions are waiting to be converted to MS drives and will clobber them if given a chance.

4. I had much problems with a sys5 interrupt from a supposedly compatible opensuse linux install of the cyberpower daemon to monitor UPS power, the system would suddenly start freezing. I had to do a complete fresh install from scratch all over again (this happened 4 or 5 times) Finally I gave up and used the apcupsd daemon to monitor the CPS UPS unit and it is doing a good job (and the monitor screen is a gui which CPS lacks)

I finallly have two systems functional now, but only because I stayed strictly with the Plasma 5 desktop and did NOT install any other desktop. In fact OpenSuse 15.2 installs the lead-in for the IceWM and TWM desktop managers, you can see them when you go to login in, but I removed the files under Yast and only have the 3 Plasma desktop logins (normal, Wayland, Full Wayland).

There is an oversight during the openSuse Leap 15.2 install which should have been fixed, it is the gpg key, that key is missing during the wifi attempted connect and KDE Wallet hammers you with missing key messages. It is easy to generate a user key, this should be inserted into the install page where the user is identified and defined.

Anyway dual operating systems are still tricky to handle when considering GRUB and it took me about week to correctly install under a UEFI environment on the HP Z420 workstation, due to bad instructions from the MS WIndows 10 download page (neglected to say that the USB stick for downloading MUST be ntfs partitioned, not fat32 partitioned due to the file splice error (no files > 4.2 gigs) and that cost me 3 days of time, the other 4 learning how to work with the firmware on the HP workstation and installing the OS's

I have the backups in place, and it is a joy to backup in less than a minute internally and externally.

Enough for now.

Hi All

I am getting the above Update Error when using the Software Update tool in 15.2.

BTW I am using the Factory repos for LibreOffice & have switched system packages to this repo. So this might be the problem?

Clearly it's trying to update LO with an openSUSE package but I do not know what with (tried Googling the patch).

Can anyone please advise what to do?

Many thanks,

Andrew

LEAP 15.2 Huge Emojis in Evolution Mail Client

Hi Everyone!

Has anyone else encountered this issue and was able to solve it?

When including an emoji, the emoji is huge and needs to be manually resized every time (as any image).

Is there a way to set a default size? I did not find anything.

LEAP 15.2 Wi-Fi adapter doesn't work with drivers installed.

Today I installed opensuse leap 15.2 and my wi-fi adapter doesn't work.
My wi-fi adapter is a Trendnet TEW 809 UB/A and the chipset is rtl8812au.

I tried installing the drivers from morrownr and gnab but none of them worked.
The wi-fi adapter has a cable in between the USB port and the actual adapter and it cannot be plugged in directly.

Hi there,

I was fine at 20210220 when I decided its time to update with the command "tumbleweed switch --install 20210320".
During (the very long) update everything went fine. Time to reboot.
After the few initial text messages that are normal before the graphical mode kicks in, the screen went black.
CTRL-ALT_DEL and CTRL+ALT+F1 not worked. Reboot this time changing the boot command bty adding "3 nomodeset" at end and removing "quit" and "splash=silent".
I added nomodeset because my GPU is a ****ing NVidia GTX-970 using proprietary driver.
But, this time looks like it is not the problem.
Booting in pure text mode this time, drop me in the emergency mode showing BTRFS related messages. Please see a screenshot https://imgur.com/a/QQMQieQ
Booting again in GRUB, selecting "bootloader from a RO snapshot" followed by "snapper rollback" restored the system as it was before.
I've tried 20210319 and 20210317 all with the same behaviour.
Currently I am on I was before the update: 5.10.16-1-default and KDE 5.20, tumbleweed 20210220. Everything is fine !!
So I suspect that BTRFS is not an issue really. 'Cause it is, why it not manifest itself on the current setup ?
I suspect it is the kernel 5.11 or btrfs itself that was updated in some previous update since 20210220.
Is it possible to update everything else expect the kernel ?
Doing that, if the problem is not present after such update, then it is a kernel 5.11 issue, am I right ?

I set the priority 98 for the newer repos, but nothing changes.

I ran

How can I tell to zypper to update packages from repositories with lower priority?

Is there another way to update packages from newer added repositories?

Thanks for attenction.

LEAP 15.2 Sharing printers on the LAN

Hello, all. I used SuSE for ages (starting well over 20 years ago), but have been away from linux altogether for a few years now. Now I have need of it again, and I am struggling.

My son has an OpenSUSE 15.2 machine, and I'm running 15.2 on an old iMac. He has a printer connected via USB to his machine; works well (simple HP LaserJet). He's wired, I'm wireless, but we're both on the LAN in the house. I want his machine to share that printer so I can print to it. I've told YaST to make that happen. It says 'ok.' My machine says there are no network-connected printers available. Both our machines' firewalls are set to allow cups on the "local" interface, and both our machines are set to have our network adapters on the "local" interface.

What do I need to do to get his printer shared on the LAN, and to get mine to see and use it?

On a related note, my wife's iMac is sharing a printer on the local network, but neither of our openSuSE machines acknowledge its existence. An Ubuntu installation saw it fine, but for other reasons I erased Ubuntu (not realizing I might need configuration info from it for this problem, since it wasn't a problem to see and set up on Ubuntu).

What do I need to do to get our openSuSE installations to see the shared printer on the iMac?

Thanks.

LEAP 15.2 Latitude e5570 with Intel 8260 - No WiFi

$

Hi, all -
I've been playing around with this all day, and I've had no luck getting the wifi on my laptop to work. It's a brand new install of Leap 15.2 on a Dell Latitude e5570 with an Intel 8260 WiFi adapter.
I'm using Network Manager, not wicked. Wired internet works just fine, but I can't even enable wireless. Whenever I open the Network Manager applet and click the checkbox for wifi, nothing happens.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
I've put the outputs of a few commands that other forums addressing similar issues ask for, hope that helps. Let me know if any more info is needed!
Thanks a million for your help!

LEAP 15.2 Get disk mappings between host and and Windows guest

$

Using KVM/QEMU
Guest disks are LVM block device and qcow2 images.
Using both Virtio-SCSI and Virtio-blk

With "disk mappings" I mean how can I tell which device on host are mapped to which device on guest?

I tried the command:
Code:

virt-filesystems --filesystems --long --uuid --domain W10_SQL_Test
Which give this result:
Code:

Name      Type      VFS  Label    Size        Parent UUID
/dev/sda1 filesystem ntfs Recovery 523239424    -      18FC1BBFFC1B95DA
/dev/sda2 filesystem vfat -        103809024    -      1A22-6B91
/dev/sda4 filesystem ntfs Drive-C  106727211008 -      E66A260F6A25DD55
/dev/sdb2 filesystem ntfs Drive-E  53668216832  -      1C287CC4287C9E88
/dev/sdc2 filesystem ntfs Drive-D  53668216832  -      EE18A5E618A5ADD1
/dev/sdd2 filesystem ntfs Drive-F  53668216832  -      9A0C8F9B0C8F7155

Device names are not the same as the one specified in the VM XML so that cannot be used.
And I've not been able to find the UUID anywhere in the Windows guest, Windows is using completely different IDs (where does these UUID come from?)

I did succeed by looking at the controller address in Windows (e.g. "PCI bus 7, device 0, function 0" which is equal to the address specified in the VM XML) and then lookup the child-devices of the controller in device-manager. But that's a lot of manual work.....any easier way?

LEAP 15.3 Leap 15.3 beta / cyrus-imapd

Hopefully this is a really simple question: I went to install cyrus-imapd on 15.3 beta and it's not there. It is in the server:mail repo but not in the main repo. Does anyone know if this is an intentional move or has it just not made it in yet but should be along in good time?

cyrus-imapd has been in the main repo since at least 10.x but I never really noticed whether key packages go missing from beta or not. I'm referring to it as a key package because I use it as a main mail server so its key to me!!

File /usr/sbin/docker-runc is missing. In solution I've found, people suggested to link file from /usr/libexec/docker, but this directory doesn't exist. I try whereis docker-runc, but it is nowhere on my system. Any suggestions?

During installation I choose English as System language.
In Yast control center, if I check the system language, it shows only English.

I'm in Italy and I can see everything in this Operating System in Italian language, but instead I would use it in English only.

Any suggestion please?
