TUMBLEWEED SageMath & Micro

$

Hello,

I don't know if this is the right place to post a package request, but I didn't find where to post otherwise.
I am using OpenSUSE Tumbleweed for about a month and I love it, because it is rolling and stable at the same time and has a good KDE integration, at least till now. Even if something goes wrong, I can use the functions of snapper.
Many of my applications are in the official repository. I had to get some of them from Flathub, but this is fine.
Problematic are two non gui packages which can't be installed with Flatpak: SageMath and Micro (terminal editor).
How can I request these packages to be included in the official repositories?

Thanks :)

PS: I know that I can get Micro as snap, but I don't want to use snaps because of the closed system behind them.

Discourse

Hello,

I have to say that that forum looks very outdated. It is not something new users would like to use to get help.
My suggestion is to use Discourse which is used by many open source communities. This would be a step to improve the image of openSUSE, a very good but hidden distro.

Thanks! :)

TUMBLEWEED Firefox videos lag

Hello,

I have a problem which is new since some days. When I watch videos in Firefox, the video lags a bit. It is not a network problem since I can see that a big part of the video is predownloaded. My CPU has buffer while playing videos, too.
I have actually installed all codecs from Packman.
How to debug?

Thanks

LEAP 15.2 How does one use one-click-install?

If I click on a link, I get a page that looks like this:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/bruce-...etaken-public/
I'm using the Chrome browser.

P.S. I just noticed this "Posting Permissions" comment:
  • You may not post attachments
  • what is that about? Seems like it'd be a lot easier to add an image to this post than have an external link.

LEAP 15.2 Multimedia Keys on a BT keyboard

$

Hello community,

I would like to know how could I get all my multimedia keys working. I've just replaced my keyboard and I'm having issues. I have 10 multimedia keys: Mute, Volume+, Volume-, Play/Pause, Music Player, PC, Calculator, Home, Mail, and Favourites. My old keyboard had the same multimedia keys, but due to their somewhat awkward ergonomy, I used only first four mentioned above.

1) Keys working out of the box: Mute, Volume+, Volume-, Play/Pause - I've used them on the previous keyboard and they work on the new one too.

2) Keys I was able to set up via KControlCenter --> Shortcuts --> Global shortcuts: PC (runs Dolphin),

3) Keys I WASN'T ABLE to set up via KControlCenter: MusicPlayer (@Amarok, though it seemed to work at some point), Calculator (@KCalc), Home (run new Chromium window, it instead *works* as go-to-default-web-page), Mail (@Chromium in app mode with GMail /I had no issue selecting and adding that from my KDE menu, where I have such shortcut/, works only with @KMail so far /acceptable/), Favourites (displays/hides Bookmarks tab in Chromium /acceptable/)

It's great that all the volume keys and Dolphin are working. Particularly painful is missing Calculator. Home key is not usable, because it doesn't open a new tab when in a browser and does nothing when not in a browser window; anticipated action would be new browser window or tab. Mail would be great with GMail, works with the KMail though. Favourite key could be put into use i.e. to run Google Keep, it's too quite useless this way.

Furthermore, can I configure the two extra buttons located on the side of the mouse?

Apart from the KControlCenter, I also installed hotkey package. When I run it in the terminal it ask a hardware to be specified, when I list it with `hotkeys -l` it provides very limited and AFAIK obsolete list of hardware, where I can't obviously find my keyboard. There are lots of references in other sources, but not much specific to OpenSUSE+KDE, so I would be grateful for advice how should I proceed.

The hardware is ConnectIT CI-185.

Regards,

Oak

LEAP 15.3 FireFox Bluetooth Complications; Had to Use Brave Instead

Good afternoon OpenSUSE Community,

System Information:
KDE - Plasma 5.18.6
OpenSUSE - 15.3
FireFox - Mozilla Firefox 78.7.1esr
Brave - Brave Browser 89.1.22.70

Experience:

Today on a call that was via Zoom, I attempted to use FireFox as my focus use browser and do the call via the browser over the option of working with a local app from Zoom. There was a clear and issue breakdown with audio immediately.

Playing with the Audio Volume Settings > Applications, I was able to see make sure that my bluetooth headset was set up to provide mic input and that the system default was set for my headset. Playing with some settings on Zoom, I was successful to get my output through the headset (which was also an issue at first) but the input from mic was solidly a fail.

Having heard from other Linux users that FireFox has been giving them some breakdown use, I decided that I was going to do a quick change and try a Chromium product (based on a chat recommendation from a friend) and went with Brave over Google Chrome.

Same issue at first where the audio was not provided through the headset (output) and mic was not being collected (input). I made sure that I was not muted and the other regular UI but still nothing. So, I opened up the Audio Volume Settings > Application and started to change the levels. It was very low for mic so I raised that for Brave specific but I was still not "hearing" anyone but... (here's the surprise) I found out later that I fixed the input before the output with me doing IT open-talk/evaluation discussing with myself (providing the regular F-bombs we do in IT when we are whisper-thinking out a solution/investigation lol).

To wrap this up, I wanted to share my experience first so that when I ask the questions below it would make more sense.

Questions:

Is anyone else having issues with FireFox based web browser when it comes to video conferencing? Too, is Chromium based WB architecture just better for this?

Thanks for your discussion on this and helping me better educate myself on how I could have gone about this in a better way.

LEAP 15.3 KDE Night Color Possible Bug (Looking for Help on How to Report This)

$

Good afternoon OpenSUSE Community,

System Information:
Operating System: openSUSE Leap 15.3
KDE Plasma Version: 5.18.6
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.76.0
Qt Version: 5.12.7
Kernel Version: 5.3.18-51-default
OS Type: 64-bit
Processors: 8 × Intel® Core™ i7-8665U CPU @ 1.90GHz
Memory: 15.3 GiB of RAM

Possible Bug:

I'm not sure if this is specific to KDE or if this is related to my use of 15.3 OpenSUSE. I'm planning to load up a 15.2 LEAP and a TW virtual when I get a moment for my lab sandbox to make sure.

In my use, I really enjoy using a tint for my screen use as bright blue computer light tends to give me quick eyestrain (nerdy enough, I double up with Night Color on the box and blue-light reflective glasses :P)

Recently today, I had to System Settings and I accidentally clicked Display Configurations in my haste to resolve an issue (the issue was audio not visual... ). After clicking Display Configurations, the Night Color mode reverted to out of the box fresh install. Moving to Night Color configuration within Display Configurations, I saw that Activate Night Color was still checked but the Night Color was still not being activated. I clicked the box and then reactivated the option but the blue light intensive option stayed active while Night Color did not.

Long troubleshooting story short, I found the resolution was:

  1. Deactivate Night Color mode
  2. Click Apply
  3. Activate Night Color mode
  4. Click Apply
  5. Don't go back into Display Configuration unless you want to repeat these steps :P

What I see as the bug here is that I never deactivated the Night Color mode but going into Display Configurations for anything makes it automatically act as if it is deactivated. Also, checking found it was still active but just not being registered. Plus, the resolution was pretty much a system reminder - we are still using this but it's not being active by deactivating, applying, and then reactivating and applying again.

I wanted to bring this to the community's attention for help so that I can be educated on how best to go about having this submitted for review; either that be by the OpenSUSE team or KDE for further validation.

Thanks and I hope you are all doing well!

Why do SUSE members blame Richard Stallman? Please post your personal opinion.

Hello,

it is extremely depressing to me being an old time openSUSE fan to see so many SUSE/openSUSE members blaming Richard Stallman, founder of Free "as in speech" Software, and so few SUSE/openSUSE members actually supporting him.

This is what I'm talking about — a request to remove Stallman from all leadership positions: https://rms-open-letter.github.io/ which was signed by almost the whole SUSE management and many openSUSE developers/maintainers:

Code:

    Alexander Herzig (Release Manager SUSE Linux Enterprise)
    Attila Pinter (aka adathor, openSUSE docs, support, OpenStorage.io CTO)
    Callum Farmer (openSUSE member & maintainer)
    Chase Crum (Sr. Architect and WIT ADVOCATE @SUSE)
    Christoph Wickert (openSUSE contributor, former Fedora Council and Advisory Board member)
    Claudia Hogan (SUSE, Chief of Staff)
    Imobach González Sosa (software developer at SUSE; openSUSE contributor)
    Janet Blackquill (jan Jan) (KDE, Fedora, openSUSE)
    Jiri Srain (Release Manager SUSE Linux Enterprise)
    Kukuh Syafaat (GNOME, openSUSE)
    Lana Brindley (Loquacity, SUSE)
    Lars Marowsky-Brée (Distinguished Engineer, SUSE; Ceph Foundation board member)
    Marcel Kuehlhorn (openSUSE contributor)
    Marina “deneb_alpha” Latini (former The Document Foundation chairperson, former openSUSE board member, LibreOffice and openSUSE contributor)
    Matthew Mattox (mattmattox, Principal Support Engineer at SUSE/Rancher Labs)
    Melissa Di Donato (CEO, SUSE)
    Neal Gompa (Fedora Project contributor, Mageia Project Council Member, Mageia.Org Board Member, openSUSE Project Board Member, OpenMandriva contributor)
    Nick Gerace (Software Engineer at SUSE and Rancher Labs)
    Richard Brown (Former openSUSE Chairman)
    Rob Knight (CTO, Enterprise Cloud Products @ SUSE)
    Sara Stephens (SUSE)
    Sasi Olin (openSUSE Member, former openSUSE Board member)
    Stefan Weiberg (Technical Projectmanager SUSE Linux Enterprise)
    Stephan Barth (Technical Project Manager for Maintenance, SUSE)
    Syds Bearda (openSUSE member + treasurer)
    Thomas Di Giacomo (CTO, SUSE)
    William Brown (389 Directory Server, SUSE Labs)

On the contrary, an open letter supporting Stallman was signed by much less [open]SUSE people: https://rms-support-letter.github.io/
Code:

    b10n1k (SUSE)
    Bryan Lunduke (Formerly: Deputy Editor of Linux Journal, Marketing at SUSE, Marketing Director at Purism, Tech Journalist at Network World)
    Ivan Kapelyukhin (openSUSE member)

Is it some kind of corporate solidarity or a real opinion of so many people within SUSE?
As for me, although not being a SUSE employee or openSUSE developer, — I do believe that the accusations are based on misunderstanding, exaggeration and distortion. We all are imperfect, and RMS in fact did more good than said bad.
I will be very grateful if people from the list above would write their opinions here, on why they do support removing Stallman from the leadership positions.

So today I accidentally broke KDE Plasma. I tried fixing it by reverting usign snapshots but that didn't work at all and now I'm in Ice WM. I tried uninstalling and installing KDE back but that didn't work.
I also do not have KDE in the login screen. I tried also changing the alternatives in the YaST alternatives but that didn't chgange anything.

Hallo,

Bin Anfänger was das betrifft. Danke

LEAP 15.2 Leap 15.2, KVM/Qemu, Spice, virgl3D with Nvidia - working or not?

$

I run an Opensuse Leap 15.2 system with a variety of KVM/Qemu VMs. With QXL or virtio video devices and Spice. Remotely with remote-viewer+TLS and virt-viewer + SSH. Locally on the host via sockets. But all without OpenGL acceleration.
My graphics card is a Nvidia 960GTX. I use the proprietary drivers from the Opensuse Nvidia community repository. I know that Nvidia does not support QBM. So, a pure Virgl3D approach with Spice will probably not work on the KVM/Qemu host.
However: There are reports on the Internet that people got virgl3D rendering to work for Ubuntu systems with an EGL-display added in addition to Spice. See e.g. https://nyblnet.blogspot.com/2020/11...-kvm-with.html

I tried to get a similar configuration running on Leap 15.2. So far, I had no success - neither with Opensuse Leap 15.1 guests, nor with present Kali guests.

The libvirt XML configuration for a guest contains something like

<graphics type='spice'keymap='de'>
<listen type='socket'socket='/opt/spices/spice.socket'/>
<image compression='off'/>
<gl enable='no'/>
</graphics>
<graphics type='egl-headless'>
<gl rendernode='/dev/dri/renderD128'/>
</graphics>
<video>
<model type='virtio'heads='1'primary='yes'>
<acceleration accel3d='yes'/>
</model>
<address type='pci'domain='0x0000'bus='0x00'slot='0x01'function='0x0'/>
</video>

As described by Ubuntu users. The render device access rights were set to 666 for tests. I tried with and without KMS mode enabled for the Nvidia drivers on the host.

For an Opensuse Leap guest I get the following information regarding "drm": .

linux-h07l:~ # dmesg | grep -i drm
[ 3.088710] [drm] pci: virtio-vga detected at 0000:00:01.0
[ 3.088712] fb: switching to virtiodrmfb from VESA VGA
[ 3.091091] [drm] virgl 3d acceleration enabled
[ 3.103862] [drm] number of scanouts: 1
[ 3.103868] [drm] number of cap sets: 1
[ 3.116995] [drm] cap set 0: id 1, max-version 1, max-size 308
[ 3.223562] virtio_gpu virtio0: fb0: virtiodrmfb frame buffer device
[ 3.336792] [drm] Initialized virtio_gpu 0.0.1 0 for virtio0 on minor 0

However, on the Spice console (virt-manager or remote-viewer) on the host I get the grub menu after that a blinking corsor on a black screen - but after that the sddm login screen does not appear. Only a white ring on a black background.

glxinfo on the guest starts with

linux-h07l:~ # glxinfo
name of display: localhost:10.0
libGL error: failed to load driver: swrast
Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig

0x022 24 dc 0 24 0 r y . 8 8 8 0 . s 4 24 8 16 16 16 16 0 0 None

As said, without the EGL-interface the configuration works perfectly for all guests - but without OpenGL acceleration.

Before I invest more time:
Has anybody out there succeeded with KVM/Qemu, Spice, EGL and virgl3D to get OpenGL accelerated on an Nvidia graphics card on an Opensuse Leap 15.2 KVM/Qemu host?
If so: For what guests and what kind of configuration?

Thank you in advance for your answers.
Regards,
Ralph

TUMBLEWEED [GDM, Wayland] Glitched/Vertically Stretched Cursor in Tumbleweed r20210325

Greetings, all. I'm new to the OpenSUSE forums (and the SUSE ecosystem in general), so please let me know if I mess anything up :)

Summary:
After upgrading my Tumbleweed dev box last week, I noticed the cursor was stretched out:

I'm not very experienced with Wayland, and most of the Google-fu and hunting around I did only returned X11 answers. I'm hoping some of you might have experienced the same issue and would have more current insights.

I've already tried:
- Rebooting (duh)
- Waiting a week and running a `sudo zypper dup`
- Ensuring I'm running the Nouveau OSS NVIDIA driver and not the modesetting one
- Changing cursor theme (worth a shot if it wasn't a graphics issue, I guess)
- Reinstalling `Mesa-dri-nouveau` as well as `x86-video-nouveau` packages
- Logging into "GNOME on Xorg" in the GDM login menu - this works and solves the issue, but I want it working on Wayland specifically if at all possible

System Hardware:
CPU: Intel i7-10700
GPU: NVIDIA NV106
MEM: 16GB

Software/Applications:
OS: OpenSUSE Tumbleweed r20210325 (x86 64-bit)

Hi everyone! Hope you're all having a nice life! :)

I'm having problems trying to run GIMP appimage in openSUSE Leap 15.2 with KDE plasma. I checked the forum and found this thread https://forums.opensuse.org/showthre...ight=appimages but it doesn't seem to apply to my case. This is what I get from terminal:
Code:

I've been using it for quite some time in Debian Bullseye with KDE Plasma too with no issues. Any help/advice is much appreciated. Thanks.

TUMBLEWEED Tried everything, Intel Smart Sound Technology Audio Controller sound card still not working

Hello everyone,
I recently switched from Fedora 33 to openSUSE Tumbleweed on the recommendation of a friend. I have a Lenovo Ideapad Flex 5, https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/in/en/p...recovery-media and the Intel Smart Sound Technology sound card was working flawlessly on Fedora 33 but the same is not the case on my openSUSE Tumbleweed installation. I have tried all the tutorials and troubleshooting with PulseAudio and alsamixer but nothing seems to work. It shows Dummy Output for speakers and absolutely nothing in the microphone section in both settings and in PulseAudio Volume Control. I don't think it is a problem with my installation as the SHA256 checksum was matching and I have tried to make a bootable device with both Rufus and Balena Etcher in an attempt to dual boot openSUSE Tumbleweed with Windows 10. Neither my speakers, nor my microphone are working on openSUSE Tumbleweed but are working absolutely fine on Windows 10. I have also tried configuring the sound card from YaST > Hardware > Sound and this is visible there https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Oia...ew?usp=sharing. The 'Delete' button does not work but the 'Edit' button does and when I click that I get the following errors for each of the configuration methods :

1) Quick automatic setup: The kernel module snd-sof-pci for sound support could not be loaded. This can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
2) Normal setup: The kernel module snd-sof-pci for sound support could not be loaded. This can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
3) Advanced setup with possibility to change options: I have no idea what to do here so i am attaching a screenshot in case it might be of some help.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1D2y...ew?usp=sharing Do I have to change values in these options or something else ? I don't know. Please help.

I would really appreciate it if someone in the community can guide me through this issue and help me fix it. I have heard about the openSUSE community in the past and the general consensus is that they are a community of friendly, active and skilled members. Hoping I will get to experience this first hand lol!

LSB Version:    n/a
Distributor ID: openSUSE
Description:    openSUSE Leap 15.2
Release:        15.2
Codename:      n/a

Hi,

Using leap 15.2 and from time in time (usually each 3 months) I ran an update on my linux (zypper ref + zypper up).
I ran on this linux two databases (IBM Informix + mysql) and in the past I already have lot of issues with OOM KILLER.
So, I "disabled" it and haven't any problem a couple years, until now.
The main solution, which I have set and still set is this configuration on sysctl :

Code:

jdivm04:/etc/sysctl.d # sysctl -a | grep overcomm
vm.nr_overcommit_hugepages = 0
vm.overcommit_kbytes = 0
vm.overcommit_memory = 2
vm.overcommit_ratio = 95

However, three weeks ago I ran my update and then OOM KILLER back in activity, killing with high frequency my databases and others services.
I have all set fine about my memory configuration and I really don't understand why it still killing them.
The last time it kill the mysql , at dmesg the message finish with this text:
Code:

[  +0.000001] oom-kill:constraint=CONSTRAINT_NONE,nodemask=(null),cpuset=/,mems_allowed=0,global_oom,task_memcg=/,task=mysqld,pid=56172,uid=60
[  +0.000065] Out of memory: Killed process 56172 (mysqld) total-vm:4673904kB, anon-rss:1218612kB, file-rss:0kB, shmem-rss:8kB
[  +0.036022] oom_reaper: reaped process 56172 (mysqld), now anon-rss:0kB, file-rss:0kB, shmem-rss:0kB

I already tried alternative solutions to deactivate it , like below, with no effect:
Code:

echo 0 > /sys/fs/cgroup/memory/memory.use_hierarchy
mkdir /sys/fs/cgroup/memory/0
echo 1 > /sys/fs/cgroup/memory/0/memory.oom_control

As far I remember, before the update I was running kernel 5.3.18-lp152.60 or 63, not sure , now is 66. (since I ran new updates to see if solve this behave)

Any tips how to deactivate for good the OOM KILLER?

LEAP 15.2 Benutzerrechte LibreOffice Calc

Hallo!

Max
