I've been trying to update my Leap 42.2 but i couldn't for some reason and i'm too lazy to figure out why D; it might be because my 10GB / is full.

i'll provide information, i want:

1- My system up to date.
2- Know how to increase root partition size, because i tried Gparted and can't do anything.

Design of opensuse.org userfriendly?

$

What do you folks think about the opensuse.org design?
Do you think, it makes it easy to find all stuff you look for?
If I look at ubuntu.com you can find really every essential ressource at the top of the page, just where you expect it.
At opensuse.org you find the links to community forums at the bottom of the page and even no link to doc.opensuse.org.....
Anyone who finds the current design perfectly userfriendly?

LEAP 42.2 Cannot mount an NFS file through OpenVPN

$

I am running Leap 42.2 on both my desktop and laptop computer. When I am running on my home network, I can mount NFS files hosted on my desktop on the laptop using my home WiFi network. I use the command (on my laptop)
mount desktop:/data/Pictures /mnt/Pictures

From the laptop programs can then access /mnt/Pictures/vacation/pretty-picture.jpg.

When I am away from home, I would like to access my files through openvpn.
From the desktop, I use
openvpn --daemon --config /etc/openvpn/server.config

I have the following as a part of server.config:
port 1194
server 192.168.33.0 255.255.255.0
proto udp
dev tun

After starting openvpn (I only want to run vpn on command, not auto startup) with ifconfig I see:
tun0 Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00
inet addr:192.168.33.1 P-t-P:192.168.33.2 Mask:255.255.255.255
UP POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:470 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:362 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
RX bytes:32849 (32.0 Kb) TX bytes:200321 (195.6 Kb)

Over on my laptop, I start openvpn with
openvpn --config /etc/openvpn/remoteclient.config
(note: --daemon is not included because I have to enter the pass phrase for the certificate)

remoteclient.config contains the following info:
dev tun0
remote home 1194

If I do ifconfig, I see
tun0 Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00
inet addr:192.168.33.6 P-t-P:192.168.33.5 Mask:255.255.255.255
UP POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)

Incidently, my /etc/hosts file on both machines is
192.168.1.5 desk #desktop computer local network address
25.25.25.25 home #ip address on the internet for my home (actual address hidden to protect the guilty)
192.168.33.1 vpnhost #address of my vpnserver.

The vpn connection appears to work. I can ping in both directions. I can do ssh from the laptop with any of these three commands:
ssh -p 12300 me@desk # My desktop does not do ssh on the standard port
ssh -p 12300 me@vpnhost
ssh -p 12300 me@home

Using kguard, I can see that the vpnhost command does go through the vpn and the wifi. The other two just go through the wifi (as I would expect).

As for the ports; I have my cable modem set up to port forward ports 12300 and 1194 to my desktop computer. There, I have allowed additional ports of 12300 and 1194 and modified my /etc/services file accordingly.

I would now like to mount nfs files that are on my desktop onto my laptop. If I am running locally at home, I can enter
mount desk:/data/Pictures /mnt/Pictures
and access the files in the directory just fine. But if I am away from home and using a hotel web or the library or a coffee shop, and I enter
mount home:/data/Pictures /mnt/Pictures
the mount times out.

I have tried searching for a solution, but cannot find anything that seems to match the problem I am having. Thanks for any help/

LEAP 42.2 upgrade 42.1->42.2 stuck on wm-ice

After failed attempt to upgrade via online upgrade, I used DVD to upgrade Leap 42.1 & KDE in place.
Now I have the icewm display manger.

Checking repositories in YaST I see plasma5 installed. How do I get my familiar desktop back?

While I'm posting, I have forgotten how I got Leap 42.1 to display 24hr time, so I'd like to know how to do that. I'm located in USA, there are 2 entries in the regional time settings but they don't seem to change it to 24hr.

Thanks

LEAP 42.2 exFAT 1TB USB3 portable storage detected but not recognised

Hi. I bought a 1 TB Toshiba USB3. It says in Windows that it's an exFAT filesystem. However, I can't mount it in Linux.

My computer is a bit old and has no USB3 connectors, just USB2.

I have executed modprobe as
Code:

leap422:/home/john # modprobe usb-storage
I installed exFAT packages fuse-exfat and exfat-utils

A listing of /dev says that sdc is detected, like this:
Code:

leap422:/home/john # ls -l /dev | grep sdc
brw-rw----  1 root disk      8,  32 May 19 16:12 sdc
brw-rw----  1 root disk      8,  33 May 19 16:12 sdc1

A mount attempt goes like this:
Code:

leap422:/home/john # mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt/sdc1
mount: /dev/sdc1: can't read superblock

I've run gparted to see it it would trigger a response. Gparged just sits churning in infinite confusion.

Any suggestions towards getting it attached would be great.

LEAP 42.2 install additional compiler gcc 4.7 in LEAP 42.2

Hi
I need gcc 4.7 compiler for Matlab 2015b. However, there is no package available in Yast, so I need to download this from GNU website. I have some questions regarding installing gcc 4.7.
Will installing gcc 4.7 conflict with current default compiler?

When I typed ./configure, it showed the error messages-Building GCC requires GMP 4.2+, MPFR 2.3.1+ and MPC 0.8.0+.
Try the --with-gmp, --with-mpfr and/or --with-mpc option to specify their location.
So I typed ./configure --with-gmp /usr/lib64/libgmp.so.10
It showed the error message /bin/sh ./config.sub /usr/lib64/libgmp.so.10 failed

Do you have any suggestion to fix this?

Thanks

Chris

LEAP 42.2 Dependency resolution failed

$

Hello everyone,

Why does opensuse have this problem? When trying to update, a popup says "Dependency resolution failed". But it doesn't get on with the rest of the updates for which the dependencies are fine: it just quits all of them. Which is ridiculous. It also says "more details can be found on the detailed report", but it very unhelpfully doesn't tell you where this report is. It also doesn't allow you to cut the text from this box to put into a search engine, which is maddening.

Many thanks for any help with this.

Kernel 4.11 Arrives in openSUSE Tumbleweed

Multiple small pattern changes had momentarily slowed the releases of openSUSE Tumbleweed snapshots, but snapshots are expected to come more frequently moving forward. The newest snapshot, 20170516, brought Linux Kernel 4.11 and tons of new fixes and features. The new kernel has at least eight prominent features and a pluggable IO scheduler for the multiqueue […]

Resource use of KDE on openSUSE

$

I have recently used KDE Neon, which is a distribution sitting on top of Ubuntu (like Kubuntu) but aligns and focuses its releases and development with KDE releases and updates. I was pleasantly surprised that while not doing much other than a couple of programs, the system was only using 700MB of RAM. I saw the CPU usage to be bumped up, though, which I guess is the trade-off.

In the comments of an article about KDE Plasma, somebody mentioned that his KDE system running Arch consumed only 500MB of RAM.

This got me thinking, if the underlying distribution has a larger impact on the resources than I thought.

If so, I wonder how much resources does an idling KDE install of openSUSE Tumbleweed typically run?

In comparison, I find Gnome shell (and Unity) to take 1.2 to 1.5 GB of RAM easily. Which is why I found Xfce more comfortable to use.

My system is Dual-core w/4GB of RAM so it isn't a powerhouse and because of that, small bumps in performance can have a noticeable effect.

I'm just curious what your experiences are. Thanks.

TUMBLEWEED How to automatically rebuild the NVIDIA proprietary drivers on kernel updates?

I have been considering to give openSUSE a try, but I need to use the NVIDIA proprietary drivers (Pascal support on nouveau is still too incomplete). So, how to setup the NVIDIA proprietary drivers on Tumbleweed so that they get automatically rebuilt on every kernel update?

Something that comes to my mind is using DKMS or AKMOD, but how do I configure one of them to do just that? Any other suggestions or tips?

Thanks in advance.

TUMBLEWEED Docker container external internet connectivity issues

Hello all,

First post, but hopefully will get involved in other bits after this... Caveat - I'm not a networking boffin.l have experience with linux + docker, but not super hot.

Can pull and run docker images fine - e.g. hello-world, redis, ubuntu, alpine. However, containers can't connect to the internet to, for example, perform apt-get or pip install. Happens in both docker builds or docker runs. Ran the following and no return packets:

Code:

dijksterhuis@pc-67-96:~> docker run --rm -it alpine '/bin/ash'

PING google.com (216.58.212.110): 56 data bytes

My ISP set up 1:2:1 NAT for me last night to allow me to SSH into my desktop. Thought it could be an issue so have asked them to disable and rebooted. No luck. I do know for a fact that they don't like port forwarding (incidentally, they won't allow SSH on port 22, SSH must be on a port higher than 1024 - could this be something to do with it?).

Attempted same tests on Macbook Pro (same network) and worked fine. So don't believe it's external network issue. Tried zypper rm docker ; zypper in docker. No luck. systemctl restart docker has no effect on issue.

Scoured some github issues and looked at tcpdump and iptables. For tcpdump, ran:
Code:

sudo tcpdump -i docker0 icmp -v

sudo  tcpdump -i enp2s0 icmp -v
sudo tcpdump -i veth537b204 icmp -v

Only successful packet transfers I saw were to google. Nothing seems to returns successfully (port unreachable error?)

Any suggestions or help would be much appreciated! At my wits end. I'd rather not switch distros, Tumbleweed is really growing on me.

Thanks in advance for any help,

LEAP 42.2 Windows to Samba migration

$
0
0
I'm wanting to replace a Windows Server 2003 with OpenSuSE and Samba. The Windows server is doing two things: providing client authentication via Active Directory, and hosting one network share. I want to migrate the Domain to Samba keeping all the current users and current Domain so no changes need to be made on the workstations. Then I want to retire the Windows server so that the OpenSuSE box (VM) is running everything and the users never see anything different. We're only talking less than 20 users.

So, first question: can it be done?

Second question is how? I'm finding docs on making Samba a new PDC, but not for migrating an existing Domain. I'm new to Samba and I'm finding the docs to be less than helpful. I have used Yast and setup Samba as best as I know how and I did find the Samba machine show up in the Computers list when I use the Active Directory Users and Computers tool on the 2003 server. However, it does not show up under the Domain Controllers list.

I'm looking for help or pointers to docs on how to accomplish this, preferably OpenSuSE / Yast specific. How to setup Samba, Kerberos, and any other bits that are part of the puzzle.

I was working through this: https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Joi...tive_Directory

But when I got to the step: kinit administrator

I get the following error: Preauthentication failed while getting initial credentials

Which did not help me in any way other than to tell me that something's wrong with my Kerberos.

Opensuse 42.1 using NetworkManager on plasma5
Network connection is not working (no link). I test cable and connectors with a cable tester and I find no error.
Ethernet card is a Gb ethernet. Switch is Gb too.
With windows connection works although at 100Mbps

I am testing with ethtool, on boot, with no link

LEAP 42.2 Kernel compilieren

Hallo zusammen,

Code:

./In file included from <stdin>:1:0:

Kann mir da jemand weiter helfen. Am System hat sich seit dem letzten Kompilieren nichts geändert. Kernel-devel ist installiert.
Googeln hat auch keine Erleuchtung gebracht.

LEAP 42.2 KDE: no compositor == no window title bars

I am looking for ways to speed up my LEAP 42.2 installation due to the lack of fglrx for 42.2.

If I turn of the compositor in Display&Monitor, the windows stop having title bars. There are strange graphical effects where the title bars should be displayed.

How do I get the title bars back?

LEAP 42.2 Special Window/Application Settings inconsistent and/or non-persistent

My daily workflow is dependant upon multi-monitors (4) utilising multi-desktops (4) across multi-activities (5)

Each combination of these is set with specific applications to be loaded at boot.

While this area of KDE is clearly still maturing IMO, under 42.1 i at least I was able work with the couple of bugs after becoming acquainted with them.

After upgrading to 42.2 however it is clear that this area ...-viz- Special Window Settings / Special Application Setting ... has been upset dramatically to the point where it is usable/unreliable/inconsistent.

There is such inconsistency in behaviour between window/application settings that i cannot find a common thread.

Broadly speaking settings are either completely lost and/or not adhered to ... but this behaviour is not consistent across all windows and applications???

This is major for me as readjusting and/or setting up workflow across desktops/activities/screens every time i restart the machine is tedious and time wasting.

I cannot find a lot of feedback on this topic across the forums.

I hope somebody can help however .. in the meantime am forced back to 42.1 where i can get some work done :(
