Hi all,
My Tumbleweed distro has grown to where I am starting to get warnings about low disc space. My partition is 31GB and I only have 2 left. All my files are stored on a separate drive, so this is OS and programs only and I don't have very many programs installed. I have removed all old kernels but not sure where else to turn. My similar Ubuntu OS on another partition is ~10 GB and Fedora on another is about the same. Any thoughts on how to isolate the problem?

TUMBLEWEED TUMBLEWEED + Skylake + Optimus, screen brightness

$

I own a Medion laptop with a Skylake/Optimus chipset. I think that it is a CLEVO in disguise because when I do a lspci -v, I see the name CLEVO/KAPOK come up in just about every entry.

The only OpenSuse version that works on it is TUMBLEWEED. Sort of...

The brightness of the screen cannot be changed. When I do: ls /sys/class/backlight there is a
acpi_video0 entry. Echoing a value into /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness does change the value in that entry, the value actually changes, but the brightness does not.

Only when using kernel 4.10.13-1-default + nvidia-bumblebee (375.39) does the intel_backlight directoy appear in /sys/class/backlight, and brightness can be changed by echoing a value into that, and also using the function keys.

Using the latest Tumbleweed kernel update with the newest nvidia-bumblebee (381.22) drivers works, but intel_backlight is missing, and the brightness cannot be changed again.

Does anyone know how to get the screen brightness working (ie get the intel_backlight entry in /sys/class/backlight) without using the nvidia drivers? I really don't want the nvidia drivers on my laptop anymore, because Tumbleweed updates tend to brake them or cause them to misbehave. I have no need for nvidia in Linux on this laptop, but without the ability to change the screen brightness, the laptop is basically unusable.

There is a major delay during boot.
The boot is stopped by displaying the message below
Code:

A start job is running for alias for nfs client
Before, with openSUSE 13.2 this was resolved by putting the "nofail" statement on the assembly line of the "/etc/fstab" file, but now that does not solve the problem
What should we do now to resolve this delay?

Hello, and have a nice day!
I have Freescale IMX6q sabresd. and Android 4.3 on it.
Trying to connect SDIO wifi rtl8723bs. All configuratoin i do from manual with rtl8723bs.
Compiling the driver as module, then put it system/lib/modules and load by insmod. No warning then i load the module, but wifi is not working. If execute the netcfg or ifconfig, there is no wifi.
One obscure thing: My driver consists only of:
8723bs.ko
Other drivers consist of:

cfg80211.ko
compact.ko

Where to get the cfg80211.ko and compact.ko for my driver? how to compile them?

Here is log:

Hallo,

I bought an AMD RX570 card to replace my NVIDIA 970. Yes, it works out of the box without additional drivers, however---- Steam does not work. I did a fresh install of everything and steam whirls around and disappears. I went to KsysGuard and ended process. Apparently, there is something that steam needs that MESA or Xorg does not supply. I tried to install the AMD Pro drivers according to the AMD website, but I am doing something wrong. First, can I install AMD drivers anymore? Second, how? THird, ist there a problem with Steam and certain video drivers? Thanks for all your help. I learn something new every day from you all!!!!!!!!!!;);););)

Hi all,
Just install OpenSuse Leap 42.2 on my new laptop (Dell Inspiron 15 7567 Gaming). I am unable to make my screen work through HDMI. I know for fact that its not a hardware problem because It got detected automatically when it booted on Windows when I received the computer.
When installing the OS I realized that the brightness also did not work properly so I update the Kernel and now the brightness is working, the laptop screen is also detected properly now since I update the Kernel.
I have made multiple attempt to fix this and had to reinstall multiple time and I am now running low on options/alternatives so I need your help.
Here is what I can tell you on my system

Here is what I tried so far:
- I tried updating the Graphic card driver to have the latest
- I tried updating the BIOS.
- I tried updating the Kernel to 4.11 (This is what enable the brightness on and off and with this install + BIOS update from scratch there is a flicker on my laptop screen when I connect the HDMI, otherwise nothing).

Right now I have another laptop similar which is a Dell Inspiron 15 7559 and on this laptop the HDMI work fine with OpenSuse installed vanilla. Also when I do the xrandr -q command on my Dell 7559 I get HDMI-1 instead of DP-1. Would that be a lead to find my problem?
Any help is mostly welcome because its been already 5 day that I have my new laptop and I am eager to let my other one go.

LEAP 42.2 Possible Security Issue in OpenSUSE LEAP 42.2

$

I am not exactly sure where I should post the following issue, and I am not sure it is even a bug. The behavior; however, is different from every other Linux variant I have tried, and what I would expect for a secure response, so I am bringing it to the community's attention.

I basically enable full-disk encryption for OpenSUSE when I installed the system (LEAP 42.2 x64). Having said this, when I start up the system, I am given the screen where I must enter my encryption password to continue. What I observed is that if one enters the incorrect password 3 times, the system brings me to the login menu where I am to select my username and enter my user password (if I have one). Trying to do that at this point, the system will not allow me to logon, despite entering the correct information. Once I restart the system, I am brought back to the screen where I have to enter the encryption password again. If I do so correctly, I am taken to the same login menu, only this time it works. If I entered the encryption password incorrectly 3 times again, the cycle repeats itself.

My concern stems from simply the fact that entering the encryption password incorrectly any number of times, one would think that the system should never allow the screen to advance to the login menu. I don't know if this is done on purpose to prevent a program from trying to brute force its way into the machine by essentially not allowing the encryption password to be continuously entered repeatedly. This could be an issue as well, which is why I am bringing it to your attention.

This is repeatable. I have tried it on a modern Dell system only a couple of months old, an 8 year old Lenovo, a friend's old HP laptop does the same thing. Is this an issue? Thanks for your time.

TUMBLEWEED Ryzen+Radeon RX460+DPaudio:Is there a way to get less kernel panics at boot?

$
0
0
Of course, my hardware config is too new to work clean.
There's a strong feeling that, all in all, every new kernel is making a significantly better job than the kernels before.
In fact, kernels before 4.11 shouldn't be used anymore for hardware like mine.
But there's a big problem:
Specially cold boot is having more or less retries ending in "kernel panic".

But there is a lot of unnecessary messages extra slowing down the boot process - and at uptime often one processor is working 100% on junk error messages (mainly endless repetitions of "unexpected IRQ trap at vector 07"), trying to write them to the log file, and writing that this isn't possible (no logging inititialised - anyway: a logfile would be flooded with junk).

  • Is it possible to minimize these messages to a tolerable quantity?
  • What's the cause for "unexpected IRQ trap at vector 07" messages? (I think, it's because of the not working Polaris driver - provisorially VGA interface instead of HDMI/DP)
  • Is it possible to minimize the number of boot tries?
(I've seen a 500 kernel panics - 100 times as much than in the last 30 years together)
  • When restrictions like using a surrogate screen driver are necessary, it would be a good idea to give an unmissable hint in the course of installation together with the successions

I'm using the last 'stable kernel', now 4.11.2-1.g03903d8-default.

It seems to work nice - when it's up.
But it's having much more boot problems - even at warm boot! - e.g than kernel 4.11.0-3.

Every update to a new kernel is an adventure!
The update to 4.11.2-1-1 ... was at first leading to disaster: it was not starting at all even after a lot of retries, all working kernels were purged. The last chance was an "update" from the original install DVD, but then the net wasn't reachable - the net connection wasn't initialized, why ever. I had to set them manually, but the router with the addresses wasn't reachable .. in former time I would have had notices on paper ...
It's a good idea to make such notices, e.g. screen dumps of the settings.
