LEAP 15.1 monitor failure.

This is regarding Machine #1 using a Samsung 27" Monitor with a 60Hz refresh rate.

Yesterday I was playing a small older 2D game through Wine. [nostalgic]
When I exited the game my monitor had changed from 1920x1080 to 1280x720.
I fixed this by going to Settings>>Display and Monitor and changing it back to 1920x1080.
Refresh rate was set to Auto.
The Samsung monitor reverted to 1920x1080 and all appeared to be fine.

Played the game again today and while I was playing the game there appeared to be a gauzy film
that crept up over the display and the task bar panel was jumping a bit.
I exited the game and because the screen was so fuzzy I rebooted.
The gauzy film started before openSuse started, while still on the Asus boot page.
I also shutdown the monitor and restarted it, but it is still the same.
I got in touch with Samsung and it appears the monitor is toast.

My questions are: Is it possible that playing that old game had anything to do with the monitor failure [because it is only 1280x720] as opposed to 1920x1080]?
I would hate to kill a brand new monitor. Is there some additional setup required to play this game at 1280x720 that I should be doing before I play?

Advice please.

I installed SUSE alongside ubuntu and windows. Windows updated, and screen resolution got "locked" below 1024x768. I wiped the drive thinking it was a Windows update problem, but when I booted into my new SUSE install, I still had that resolution, even in windows or any other OS. This is the

How to create -debuginfo subpackage?

Hello, its me again.

I am trying to create a debuginfo package for LibreCAD_3 https://build.opensuse.org/package/s...reat/LibreCAD3
but I got the error saying

Code:

I read on this documentation:
https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Packaging_guidelines
https://old-en.opensuse.org/Packaging/Debuginfo

But could not find example of spec file to make -debuginfo subpackage.

I tried adding a debuginfo package as such:

Code:

%package  debuginfo
Summary:  Debug information for package %{name}
Group:    Development/Libraries/C and C++
#BuildArch: noarch

%description debuginfo
Debug information for package %{name}.

But I got this error:
Code:

line 75: %package  debuginfo: package LibreCAD_3-debuginfo already exists
So I disabled it.

I tried adding debug info %files list as well but it does not work.
Code:

%files debuginfo
/usr/lib/debug
/usr/lib/debug/usr
/usr/lib/debug/usr/local
/usr/lib/debug/usr/local/lib

I'm having this problem after installing in the wrong partition, see attached picture (Link: https://ibb.co/yh3XFKk ), I'm using all space for /dev/sda2 but I have a lot of free space on /dev/sda3. Snapper and btfrs are not working. I'm getting error to configure them.

Well, what can I do to free the space on /dev/sda2. The GUI is not lunching anymore since the last installation.

Thank you all for the help;

TUMBLEWEED Cannot browse Windows Network/Shares

Hi,

Just installed Tumbleweed onto an old ish HP Elitebook G4 with dual SSD's (120 Gb with Tumbleweed and 256 Gb for Data etc), Ive been able to mount the 256Gb and can access that through "Other Locations" "Computer" "mnt" "Data", so all good there however I cannot browse "Networks" "Windows Network" I get the following error message

"Unable to access location"
"Failed to retrieve share list from server: No such file or directory"

I've made that under Yast Samba the workgroup is set to "workgroup" to match my Windows machines, I even set "client min protocol = smb3" this has made no difference - I'm at a bit of a loss now - Yes I have tried searching but nothing specific to my issue or at least help I can understand comes up

TUMBLEWEED No soundcard detected after reboot

Hi,

since I connected my laptop to a USB 3 dock the laptop's intrenal soundcard is no longer detected after reboot. (I'm not entirely sure if the problem emerged right afterwards)
KDE shows a "Dummy Output" only and no sound is being played.
What helps is to go to the sound configuration within Yast and a) delete the present configuration and b) edit the than unconfigured sound card. Yast restarts the sound system in some sort of way I was not able to do manually.

I tried quite a lot of things to resurrect the initial recognition of the card.
I deleted /etc/modprobe.d/50-sound.conf and let Yast recreate it, I tried to restart alsa via `systemctl restart alsasound.service`, `alsactl init`, tried to tinker with the alsamixer ... nothing helped so far.
Recently, I booted from a Leap 15.1 live USB stick and sound worked out of the box. This should rule out hardware problems.
On another and different laptop I tested the other day it helped to add "snd-intel-dspcfg.dsp_driver=1" to the boot options. Not surprisingly, this didn't help with this issue.

Another thing I noticed where this two messages during boot:
hdaudio hdaudioC0D0: Unable to bind the codec
See the journalctl's snippet below:

Running `/usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh`right after booting generated this output:
http://alsa-project.org/db/?f=4a9de9...e7811571cc1973

Running it again after reconfiguring the sound card with Yast resulted in this output:
http://alsa-project.org/db/?f=3c9ab3...1834b0ebbc52a2

I'm running out of ideas where else to look.
(This problem survived several weeks and a lot of updates of many packages.)
Any help is appreciated!

Additional info:
- When booting the laptop connected to the USB-dock, the dock's sound device is recognized immediately.
- This "Dummy Audio Device" is shown within KDE no matter which user logs in after reboot
Even a newly created user doesn't see the internal sound device
This leads me to the conclusion, that it's a system wide configuration not being quite right.

Code:

cat /etc/modprobe.d/50-sound.conf

options snd slots=snd-hda-intel
# nS1_.hHmDP7YoWB0:Sunrise Point-LP HD Audio
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel

LEAP 15.1 Newmoon / Palemoon crashes often in 15.1

I was having trouble with Newmoon crashing. I had thought it was something with setting my gtk2 settings so the scrollbar was big enough to click on. I have now done a fresh install, with minimal changes (dolphin settings). I added the network repository and went to add newmoon. When clicking accept, yast crashed. I restarted it, and installed newmoon ok. I added no addons, and went to https://www.treestuff.com/home?categ...3&ref=CHIPDROP scrolled down to the Shop by categories, moved my mouse over chainsaws, and it crashes every time I tried it. There's other websites that crash also.

Is this a known problem or any suggestions to narrow it down? This happens on desktop and laptop.

Kind members,
I really browsed and surfed to find an answer. I am a dummy and I didn't find the answer.
I (and probably many others outside here) only need, please, a model name:
a webcam you found working without intervention on a standard opensuse leap 15.1 install.
Just a model name.Working on a system brand new install with webcam connected.
Please.
I'll buy and try and succed or fail without recriminations.
No lsbusb output, no gspsca install, no system configuration, please.
Someone of you by sure succeeded. You succeeded? Please let me know..
Thanks thanks in advance. I'llbe your servant for the rest of my life. That's what I (and i guess other people out there) need, Paolo Brusasco.
Don't leave it to geeks. Help common users. Please.
P.s. I'm a retired programmer. I'll never more write submit compile link make edit a line of code or config file till the end of the world.

TUMBLEWEED nVidia Proprietary Driver: Hardware Decoding For H.264 or H.265 ?

Hi,

I need hardware decoding for either H.264 or H.265 video.

I am running an nVidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4GB GDDR5 PCIe GPU
with current nVidia proprietary openSUSE Tumbleweed installed display driver version 440.64.

In Tumbleweed I installed "libva-utils" via YaST Software.
When I type "vainfo" in KDE Konsole I get the following errors:
Code:

jlp@SortaFastDesktop:~> vainfo
libva info: VA-API version 1.6.0
libva info: Trying to open /usr/lib64/dri/nvidia_drv_video.so
libva info: va_openDriver() returns -1
vaInitialize failed with error code -1 (unknown libva error),exit

Is there something I can do to get the above working on my openSUSE Tumbleweed KDE 64Bit?
Let me know, thanks!

Jesse

TUMBLEWEED Bleachbit fails to start after update - "GdK-CRITICAL"

Hi!

Just updated a TW 64bit KDE and after rebooting I wanted to start Bleachbit, but it doesn't come up. In the console I get:

Code:

~> bleachbit
scandir is not available, so falling back to slower os.walk()

(process:14934): Gdk-CRITICAL **: 09:58:17.415: gdk_screen_get_root_window: assertion 'GDK_IS_SCREEN (screen)' failed

Nothing in dmesg.

I have

Code:

python 2.7.17-7.1

bleachbit 3.2.0-2.1 (from: built.opensuse.org/utilities)

I found this, but what does it mean?

https://unix.stackexchange.com/quest...open-display-0

The proposed

Code:

xhost +
doesn't help (same output in consle'). Neither does "sudo bleachbit"...

Any ideas?

PS: I updated two KDE TW yesterday, there Bleachbit is just doing fine...

[  384.926746] [ERROR]Aborting because fallback start is disabled.

I have already gone through the troubleshhoting part of the article, and it doesnt work still.
Thank you

LEAP 15.1 Keeping going in times of corona isolation

My sister has a group of (about 10) pensioners who attended her evening classes for English literature. It is now a private group that really wants to keep going in spite of the current corona isolation recommendations.

Only about 75% of these pensioners have email and, in any case, the thought of distributing work sheets by email and/or snail mail back and forth is distinctly impersonal and unattractive.
My initial idea was to suggest a live stream with accompanying chat (always assuming we could persuade the participants to upgrade their technologies respectively). But I was wondering, if there are adequate alternatives that are supported by the OpenSUSE distribution packages and applications. I guess we have to suppose that the participants have Windows (my sister included), Apple and smartphones and few, if any, have Linux.

Can anyone point us to a good solution, assuming that the requirements are active communication of a group, with or without video, with or without two-way audio? She has participated of an Open University course some years ago and that caught her imagination as being what she means.

In these days of corona isolation, especially for the groups at risk, her request strikes me as having general interest, especially if a solution could be found which requires modest upgrade in resources. It's a kind of humanitarian need that has appeared on our doorstep, the need for people living in relative isolation to be able to continue to participate in their favourite activities..

Does anyone have any ideas? What OpenSUSE packages could be used in some way?

Cheers
Harvey

LEAP 15.1 OpenSUSE Virtualization Repo guest additions keeps abending for OpenSUSE 15.1 guests

I installed 6.1.4 from here
baseurl=https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Virtualization/openSUSE_Leap_15.1/
The host runs fine, Windows 10 guest runs fine, but OpenSUSE 15.1 guest installed via zypper from that repo fills the journal with virtualbox_kvm aborted over and over.
The guest appears to run fine - but I restored the guest backup from before the update to 6.1.4 - the 6.1.2 Guest additions in the guest works flawlessly with 6.1.4 host.

The interesting thing is that the setting wants to use a video drive that does not scale - it shows a warning that the guest might be configured wrong and suggests the wrong video driver VboxSVGA will allow different size screens the the VMSVGA does not for OpenSUSE guest OS.

LEAP 15.1 virt-manager disk image size differences

I've been using Virtualbox for my test VMs forever basically and recently I decided that I would give virt-manager a try. So far I really like it a lot! But I found something curious.

First, here is a screenshot of the part that is odd.
https://i.imgur.com/r5jwZng.png

If I create the disk image by using the default option then the disk image allocates the full amount of space. If I instead select the option to create a custom image it is a dynamically growing image. And here is the verification.

Code:

> du -sh *
17G    opensuse15.1.qcow2
3.7M    test.qcow2

The first one above was created by selecting the default option and the second was created using the custom option. Both are 16G images and both appear to be the same file format.

Code:

> file opensuse15.1.qcow2
opensuse15.1.qcow2: QEMU QCOW Image (v3), 17179869184 bytes

> file test.qcow2
test.qcow2: QEMU QCOW Image (v3), 17179869184 bytes

The problem here is that I would always like to have them created as the dynamically allocated image but I might sometimes forget that I would need to go through that extra step to do it

Is there a way to have it create the dynamically allocated images by default?
