TUMBLEWEED New journal errors after 2020-09-15 update.

Some of the errors have been around since the system was installed, and were present in Fedora as well. I filtered out the AER errors with grep, because they've been around for years. Here are the errors, the new ones are in bold:

Code:

> sudo journalctl -b -p err | grep -v 'AER:'

Is there an easy way to determine which package update is causing the problem?

LEAP 15.2 HP LaserJet Pro MFP M28-M31- multifunction scanner error using xsane

I tried to do a couple of scans this evening, and got an error that my system needed a plugin to perform the scan.
All of my scan applications gave that error "plugin required".

xsane was active for all pf the following:
It gave me 2 choices.
1- search on the web(I assume HP? )
2- install from local.
Since I don't have that plugin 'local', I let it do the search.
Then a popup came up saying the plugin was ready, and 'root' password required.
I did that in xsane scanned. It was slow, (REALLY SLOW) but eventually the scan came through.

Did I mess up? Is there a system plugin that I could have installed from zypper or YaST?
Is there a way to make scans faster for this multi-function HP printer?

PS; I am just guessing the upgrade to Leap 15.2 took out the 'plugin' that was installed, since this is the first time I have scanned after the upgrade.

Hi,
I am getting an update error

It happens every time it tries to update.
What should I do about this?
Thanks,

LEAP 15.2 wireshark won't run on LEAP 15.2

Installed wireshark from the 15.2 repo but it will not run as follows:

Code:

foo@bar:~> sudo wireshark
[sudo] password for root:
qt.qpa.xcb: could not connect to display
qt.qpa.plugin: Could not load the Qt platform plugin "xcb" in "" even though it was found.
error: XDG_RUNTIME_DIR not set in the environment.
Failed to create wl_display (No such file or directory)
qt.qpa.plugin: Could not load the Qt platform plugin "wayland" in "" even though it was found.
This application failed to start because no Qt platform plugin could be initialized. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

Available platform plugins are: eglfs, linuxfb, minimal, minimalegl, offscreen, vnc, wayland-egl, wayland, wayland-xcomposite-egl, wayland-xcomposite-glx, xcb.

Is there a fix?

TIA!

OTHER VERSION TW or Leap for Docker Server?

$

I will be installing OpenSuse on this hw: HPE Proliant DL380 G7 with 144GB DDR3 RAM and 2x2.6GHz XEON CPU - upgradeable to 3.4GHz - and 16 SAS 2'5 drives. Got 2 identical servers that will be clustered if I can manage that.

Hardware requirements have been checked and everything seems to work out. Have tested a Live CD with Leap and it even detected and configured the network, based on 2 Broadcom NIC that other*nix distro have issues with. (Debian).

So, intended usage:

  • Webmin, www.webmin.com
  • Docker - via Podman ?
    • Nextcloud
    • Matomo
    • Firewall (probably OPNSense but I am also considering a separate box for this)
    • Traefik
    • Ubiquiti UNMS
    • Sphinx
    • MySQL + PHP (Nginx/MariaDB) web lab. Wordpress - Piwigo etc...
    • etc...

So when I say Docker some people say I should go Tumbleweed since it has better support for later versions of Podman - 2. Opinions about that? Leap "only" has Podman 1.

I am REALLY hoping for this to come together without to much hands on fixing in conf files and such. Then I will be asking here, probably a lot. Some Docker distros have terrible docs, other better, and many are to me rather incomprehensible. But first thing is first... Leap or TW?

LEAP 15.2 Software Where?

Just installed Leap 15.2 KDE. It's a long time since I've used Suse/OpenSuse but I do remember that there was a lot more listed in Yast software than is now the case. The lists are tiny compared to what they used to be. It looks very bleak.
Is this how it's supposed to be?
I've installed the Packman repository, but that doesn't seem to have made much, if any, difference.
If this is all you now get then I'll have install another distro.
Which would be a shame because the rest of the distro is first rate.

Does anyone know if, the Digikam Photograph Inpainting tool is included in the openSUSE packages?
  • I've installed Digikam Version 7.1.0 on Leap 15.2 and, can't find it – it also seemed to be not included with version 6.4.0 …

Installed Digikam packages:
Code:

Hello,

Problem: Screen except mouse movements freezes due to reasons I could not grasp.

Diagnostics:
  • I have attached the output of `journalctl -b`: https://gofile.io/d/Px1ezd
  • Details:
    • GNOME v 3.62.2
    • Graphics: GeForce GTX 460/PCle/SSE2
    • OS: openSUSE Leap 15.1
    • OS type: 64-bit

I would appreciate if someone points me in the right direction.

Please let me know if anything further needed to identify the problem, or needs further elaboration.

Many thanks.

LEAP 15.1 UTF-8 not rendered by kate for some files

I have a script that creates several files, each beginning with Zero Width No- Break Space ('EF BB BFX, BOM) and containing Hebrew text in UTF-8. When I open them in kate, some render correctly and some don't. However, LibreOffice correctly renders a file that kate garbled.

As an example, in a file called katz.out, kate renders "H: הרב שְׁמוּאֵל יְהוּדָה בַּר צְבִי יַעֲקֹב הַכֹּהֵן" as "H: ה׹ב שְׁמו֌אֵל יְהו֌ד֞ה ב֌ַך שְב֮י יַעֲקֹב הַכֹ֌הֵן".

Any idea what's causing this?

LEAP 15.1 During boot system pauses about 10 secs

I have two 15.1 systems here, only one of them shows the problem.

I can also boot the one with the problem in 13.1, which does not show the problem.

The problem is that during the boot the sytem pauses, not doing anything. Even the screen goes sleeping after a few seconds.
After about 10 secs the system returns to life and finishes booting and all is fine then.

I tried o find out what is displayed before and/or after this delay (all is going very fast) and I have the idea that it is somewhere around this snippet from dmesg:
Code:

LEAP 15.2 Hard Disk Activity Memory Hole

$

I do not know where else to post this, so here goes. I have a clean basic XFCE installation of OpenSUSE LEAP 15.2. This behavior happens on both the Asus R541U laptop I used to have (8GB RAM, 512MB Swap) and my new Dell Inspiron 7591 (16GB RAM, 1GB swap). I would boot into OpenSUSE to do some "hard drive wrangling", i.e. making disk images of hard drives via USB adapters (dd if=/some/device | gzip -c > imagefile) or zeroizing old disks (dd if=/dev/zero of=/some/device).

As soon as I begin the dd process, my RAM and swap climb through the roof. Almost no applications are open when this occurs. For example:

1) When I was using my Asus to read the 512GB SSD via an adapter to another USB external hard drive (BACKUP) (i.e. dd if=/dev/nvme0n1 | gzip -c > /run/media/robert/BACKUP/Windows/dell7591.img.gz)

2) When I was backing up my files on the Asus (rsync -Hav /home/robert/ /run/media/robert/BACKUP/dell/robert/)

3) When I was copying the dd image to the new 1TB SSD upgrade for my dell (gunzip -c /run/media/robert/BACKUP/Windows/dell7591.img.gz | dd of=/dev/nvme0n1)

4) When I was just now zeroizing the old 512GB SSD via the same USB adapter (dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb)

5) When I was synchronizing my incremental monthly backups (both 2TB external USB drives running LUKS) (rsync -Hav --delete --progress /run/media/robert/BACKUP/ /run/media/robert/BACKUP2/ )

It always seems connected to rsync/gzip/dd, i.e. heavy use of filesystems. If I boot OpenSUSE and I am just sitting in OpenSUSE using applications, usually it does not cause me to dig into swap.

At the height of the zeroizing action, for example, swap use (16GB RAM, 1GB swap, new Dell Inspiron 7591) climbed to 108MB. It dropped to 11MB.

Given that I have 16GB of RAM, such behavior is absolutely unacceptable. All the I/O should be happening on disks. I have not been able to triangulate, using top, what process is eating RAM so much.

I am using EXT4 exclusively, no BTRFS anywhere.

I have remounted all tmpfs entries to only give them 1GB of RAM to work with, as in the past this has prevented such excessive swappiness (believe it or not; it's difficult to prove; older versions of OpenSUSE, etc).

I am willing to run experiments to see what's going on.

I noticed that there were some btrfs components of systemd that were installed. I uninstalled them, but the problem remains.

I don't understand how even running something complex as rsync + gzip + dd should need to dig into that much system RAM. I mean, I have 16GB!

Have any memory leaks been reported on OpenSUSE?

LEAP 15.2 Bootable USB Size

$

Hi,

After years of live upgrades from one OpenSUSE version to the next, the new LEAP 15.2 version will be installed onto a new completely blank system replacing my 8 year old one.

For this purpose, I am trying to get started with the Bootable USB option. The Install Page claims the disk image requires 3.99GB but have not been able to write onto any of my USB drives which are all 4GB. The issue is that the OpenSUSE Studio Image Writer seems to think they are 3.84GB disks! This could be due to formatting overhead but I fully expect to overwrite the entire USB disk and so don't mind losing whatever is eating up those missing 0.16GB.

  1. Is there a way to write the Bootable USB image directly into the RAW USB disk so that it ignores any file-system overhead?
  2. Is there a way to wipe the USB clean so that it is correctly recognized as having 4GB?

Although not entirely related to the problem, would the Bootable USB image be usable on a device indirectly? Specifically, I have tons of SD and MicroSD cards that are over 4GB and I could use those if it is possible to boot from a USB card-reader, of which I also have plenty.

Thank you,

- Itai

LEAP 15.2 Policy Kit decides to use a partition

$

I have upgraded to 15.2 from previous version.

Right after the boot, while Plasma is starting, the policy kit (PolKit1) wants to mount a partition, and asks root's password for that.

I don't want that partition to be mounted. There is nothing said about the partition in fstab.

In System Settings -> Removable Storage -> Removable Devices -> Device Overrides, the partition is neither listed to be automounted at login nor to be automounted on attach (all boxes are unchecked in the table).

There are other partitions in the computer, which policy kit does not want to mount.

How can I disable that undesirable behavior of the policy kit? I haven't configured it in any way.

TUMBLEWEED Why openSUSE Tumbleweed installed on bare metal cannot boot from Hyper-V?

I installed openSUSE Tumbleweed and Ubuntu on the same SSD in my computer. I use Windows most of the time but sometimes I do need to use Linux and I don't want to reboot to that SSD. So I choose to run a VM from that SSD with both Linux. I'm also a frequent Windows Sandbox (based on Hyper-V) user, and back a few months ago, Windows hates hypervisor other than Hyper-V and I'm stuck with it. (Please don't ask me why I bother with Windows Sandbox in the first place, I love it.)

It will reach a certain target, get stuck for a while then a watchdog is triggered, something like initramfs timeout will spam all over the screen for a while, then drawn into initramfs emergency shell.

I tried to lookup the log inside the initramfs, nothing stand out, but the same initramfs timeout appeared in the end of the log, as I expected.

At the same time, that Ubuntu installation will boot under Hyper-V just fine.

I tried to have a fresh install of openSUSE in Hyper-V for reference, and took a look on what package is missing on the Linux SSD. It turns out I didn't have hyper-v package installed, so I installed it and gave it another try, SNAFU again. I expected this because it after installing that package, it didn't even initiate regernerating the initramfs, where the trigger of the culprit is.

After Windows 10 Version 2004, finally VMWare can co-exist with Hyper-V, I tried VMWare Player out, it worked flawlessly.

Ok, so I already get it working, I'm still curious why Hyper-V didn't work while VMWare worked flawlessly, and why Ubuntu worked but openSUSE didn't?

LEAP 15.2 btrfs-clean using 100% CPU when I have no btrfs filesystems

Today I boot my computer and It is really slow. I open a terminal (after a while) and run a top command, btrfs-clean and some others btrfs proccess are taking a lot of CPU time, but I have no btrfs filesystems at all. I had to kill a couple of this proccess by hand and the problem was gone, altough it left a lot of zombie process

Code:
